Shi's Kanji Symbol

Post by Cyn431 on 6/9/2010, 9:23 pm

I found this kind of ironic... Anyway, so if you know stuff about Japanese stuff and whatnot, you know that shi could mean two things: four, and death. (Plus it's my favorite number. Razz) Take a good look at the Kanji symbol for death:

It's a freakin' smiley face.

Haha, I find this funny because all the preps have this as their middle names on FB, and they have no idea what it means.

Wait... I just Googled it, because I wanted to know whether it was the same in Chinese (which I'm taking next year), and the symbol is completely different, even though they both use Kanji...?

Kanji is used as a general term for that style of writing, but the symbols vary from language to language. The word itself is Japanese, but it translates to "Han characters" or "Chinese characters" so the Chinese still use it to name their writing. If that makes sense. It's just like how we use the Greek term "alphabet" to name our own lettering system. nod

@Avvy: Isn't it so cute? :3

@Mia: I never knew you felt so negatively towards the smiley face. :O

@Musi: Well, I dunno about the Greek alphabet, but in Japanese each letter represents a syllable, and that smiley face refers to the syllable shi, which alone can be its own word ... In this case, the smiley face means DEATH. xD
ℓ <-- what is that, anyway? JW, 'cause I can't tell. xP
