Chapter One

Bree Watson layed on the cool green grass, staring at the clear blue sky. She wished life were always this peaceful. Out here time could stop and she could take a breath. Out here, under the big weeping willow, she could let her mind go blank or she could think about things that she didn't have the time or privacy to think about anywhere else. Bree sucked in a breath of cool crisp air and slowly let it out. Like how her life had completely changed in just four short months. How she went from being a fairly normal fifteen-year-old, to someone she didn't even recognize anymore. She wished so badly that she could turn back time. Do something, anything, to change how things turned out. But, of course, she couldn't. There was absolutely nothing she could do to change the past and torturing herself about it was only going to make things worse. That's what her counselor kept telling her, anyway. But something kept telling her that there was something she could do. Not to change the past, but the future. She didn't know why. She didn't know what. But something.
Bree sat up, brushing herself off. It was time to go home. Well, to her foster home anyway. She headed down the familiar path toward Kellie Avenue. The walk to her foster family's house was a good twenty minutes away, but she didn't mind. The longer she was out of Caren and Rob's house, the better. It's not that she didn't like them. They were pretty decent as far as foster parents went. It was just crowded. There were three other teenage girls that were in the faster care system with Bree, plus Caren and Rob had two little girls of their own. The house was only four bedrooms and with everyone running around it felt even smaller. Hopefully, she would only be there another year or so, then she could get emancipated and move out. She didn't like the idea of being on her own at sixteen, but she didn't have many options here.
Bree turned onto Kellie Avenue. She was only about five minutes away now. The sun dipped low in the sky. A sudden gust of wind sent her dark red hair flying around her head and she reached up to brush it away. Then she stopped. A crash behind her made her turn on her heels in surprise. She'd been getting the feeling that someone was watching her fairly often lately and the loud noise only raised her suspicions. She squinted in the glow of the late afternoon sunset, but saw nothing. Bree took a step closer in the direction the crash had come from. Still she didn't see anything. She bent down to pick up stone from the neighbors garden and slowly walked inbetween the two houses where the noise had come from. When she heard a rustle from behind the knocked over trash can that must have been the crash she heard, she prepared to throw her rock. But breathed in a sigh of relief when she saw a grayish tabby jump out. The cat walked past Bree and up to the porch of the house who's trash can she had knocked over. Bree rolled her eyes and dropped her rock. Of course no one was following her. What a stupid assumption.
When she finally reached Caren and Rob's Bree stood outside for a moment. The house was cute. One floor with white stone and a wooden door. The house was one of the smaller ones in the neighborhood. She suspected she might like it a lot better were there not eight people living in it. She headed for the door, preparing herself for the chaos that would, without a doubt, be going on behind that wooden door. She walked in only to be proven right. She stood in the doorway watching as everyone ran around doing this or that. The little girls, Macy and Sarah, ran around playing fairy princess and tapping anything and everything with their wands and then declaring what they had turned it into. The older girls shuffled through the house grabbing what they needed for the first day of school tomorrow. Rob sat at a desk in the living room typing something on the computer. And Caren was cooking dinner in the kitchen. No one semed to notice Bree had walked in.
She made her way to the kitchen to see what was for dinner. "Hi, Caren." She said, walking up behind her.
"Oh, hello, Bree. Did you just get home?" She asked, stirring something that was bubbling in a large pot.
"Yeah. What's for dinner tonight?" Bree asked, hoping against all odds that it was anything but spaghetti.
"Spaghetti." Caren replied. "And it's just about ready, so go get washed up."
"Alright." Bree tried hard not to sigh and was pleased with herself when she succeeded. She walked down the hall to the bedroom she shared with Kate. Kate was a few months older than her and had become one of Bree's closest friends in the few months they had lived togther at Caren and Rob's. She was tall and thin with thick blonde hair and pale skin. Almost Bree's exact opposite, in both appearence and personality. They were an unlikely pair, but the tragedies they had each gone through gave them a common ground.
Bree walked over to her dresser and grabbed her hairbrush. After a several minutes she gave up the struggle and dropped the brush. She walked to the bathroom that all six girls shared to wash her hands. She looked at herself in the mirror. There was the girl she didn't know anymore. Staring right back at her with sad green eyes. Her pale skin dotted with light freckles seemed to stand out against her thick dark red hair. Bree splashed her face with water then walked out of the bathroom.
Everyone else was already at the table when she reached the small dining room. She sat down and, reluctanly, started eating the spaghetti Caren had prepared. Everyone seemed to be talking at once and Bree had only taken a few bites when she couldn't handle it anymore.
"May I please be excused?" She asked Caren and Rob.
"You haven't eaten very much." Caren said skeptically.
"I'm not hungry." Bree said and got up from the table without waiting for a reply.
When she reached her room she laid down on her bed and fell asleep fast.

Chapter Two

Bree awoke to a loud clang. She sat upright in bed, surprised. What was that? She pushed hair back from her face then covered her ears as the harsh banging came again. She pushed the blue and green quilt her mother had made off of her and dragged herself out of bed. She glanced over at her roommate. Kate laid in bed, still sleeping soundly. Bree had never known anyone that slept as hard as Kate. She would be willing to bet that she could throw a rock at Kate's head and she wouldn't even stir.
When the noise came yet again, Bree headed toward the door to investigate. She padded down the hall as quietly as possible, not that anyone would be able to hear her over the terrible racket that seemed to be coming from the kitchen. Bree peered around the wall and into the kitchen, unsure of what she might find. Then she let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. Macy and Sarah sat on the floor surrounded in pots and pans. They each held metal spoons in their hands and were banging proudly on the pans. As she got closer Bree realized that the girls were singing, though you couldn't hear them unless you were staanding right next to them.
"Hey! Guys!" Bree yelled, trying to get their attention. The two girls carried on with their song, taking no notice to the girl right beside them.
"Guys! Stop!" Bree practically had to scream this time. They looked up at her.
"Hi, Bree!" Macy said in her sweet little girl voice. Blonde curls bounced around her head as she talked. "Did you like our song?" Her blue eyes sparkled.
"We're gonna start a band!" Sara said. She looked very much like her younger sister except Sarah had brown hair like her father. They both had tan skin and long limbs.
"That's a great idea," Bree said, wondering how she was going to tell them they had to stop. "But do you really think that-" She glanced at the clock that hung on the yellow wall. "Five o'clock in the morning!? What are you guys even doing up this early?"
"Macy couldn't sleep." Said Sarah "She was scared about her first day of school today. I told her there was nothing to be scared of 'cause I did this a whole year last year. I told her you get to make lots of new friends and play, but she was still scared."
"So you decided to form a band?" Bree asked, confused.
"Uh-huh." Macy said as if it were what anyone would have done.
Just then Caren came out of her room. She wore a pink bath robe and her blonde hair was pulled back into a bun. "What are you girls doing?" She asked.
"They couldn't sleep." Bree said.
"Macy's scared about school starting today." Said Sarah.
"Ok, well, you two need to at least try to get some more sleep." Caren said and walked the girls back to their room as Bree headed for her own.
When she got back to her room, Bree sat down on her bed. She had completely forgotten about school starting today. She was not at all ready for this. She wasn't ready for the stares and questions. She wasn't ready for the worried looks from teachers. She wasn't ready for people who tried to understand, but couldn't. But most of all she wasn't ready for the sympathy. Bree wished she could go to school and things could be normal. The way they were five months ago. But she couldn't. She sighed and layed back on her bed.

"Bree! Wake up." Bree opened her eyes and realized she had fallen asleep. "Time to get up and ready." Kate said, her blonde hair hanging down in Bree's face. Bree sat up. "Okay, I need your help deciding what to wear." Kate walked over to the closet and pulled out an arm load of clothes. She held up a pair of white capris. Bree shook her head. Next she pulled out a jean skirt. Again Bree shook her head. Then she picked up a black and white layered top.
"I like that one." Bree said.
"Better than this one?" Kate held up a purple v-neck.
"Definately."
"Okay, I'll wear my blue jeans with it." Kate grabbed her clothes and headed for the bathroom.
Bree went over to her dresser and pulled out a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. The less attention she drew to herself, the better.
After she was finished getting ready, she went to the kitchen for something eat. Bree grabbed a couple of waffles out of the freezer and popped them into the toaster. Macy and Sarah had already left for school and the other girls were still running around gathering their things. The toaster popped and Bree pulled her waffles out of the toaster and started spreading peanut butter on them.
"That's so gross." Said a voice from behind her.
Bree turned around. It as Ashley. Ashley was not tall but she was still taller than Bree. Everyone was. Bree was just barely five feet. Ashley had dark brown hair, olive skin and eyes so dark they almost looked black. She wasn't a mean person, she just wasn't a morning person. "You've never even tried it." Bree said to her.
"I don't like peanut butter." Ashley said and Bree wondered how anyone could not like peanut butter.
Half an hour later the four girls were out the door. Bree groaned. This was not going to be a good day.

I haven't written on this in a long time, but here's more! =D Hope you like it.

Chapter Three

As soon as Bree got to school Ashley and Kylie walked off, meeting up with their friends. Kate patted Bree’s back and gave her a reassuring look. She didn’t have to say anything. That one look was enough to get Bree through the large doors. As soon as she walked into the school, things felt normal. For the first time in five months, Bree felt like a typical fifteen-year-old girl. That feeling lasted all the way up to her first class.

The moment she stepped into the classroom, all eyes turned on her. Less than two seconds later, the whispering started. Bree could feel her face grow warm, and she rushed to a seat in the back of the class. You’d think that after three months of summer people would have forgotten about Bree Watson, the girl with the tragic story. But no, it was as if seeing Bree reminded everyone that about what had happened. Maybe people thought that Bree wanted them to sympathize for her. Maybe they thought she wanted their pity and attention. But she didn’t. What she really wanted was for everyone to treat her normally.

The teacher called the attention to the front of the room, and everyone stopped talking. Bree sighed in relief. She knew that as soon as class was over people would be talking again, but she was glad that, for the moment, the attention was not on her.

Bree was right. The moment class was over, the whispering started again. People kept shooting glances at her, pointing at her. She just wanted it to stop. But she knew it wouldn’t. Bree went looking for Kate. They had agreed to meet at Bree’s locker as soon as first period ended. Locker 321. It was all the way at the other end of the school. Bree looked at her feet, trying to ignore the whispering and stares. It was then that she bumped into someone and fell to the ground. “I’m so sorry.” She said blushing. She looked up to see who she had run into. A boy about her age stood in front of her. He was tall, he had dark brown hair that spilled over into his eyes a little, tan skin, and bright blue eyes. She blushed harder.

“It’s all right.” He said, reached out his hand to help her up. “Those are some impressive sneakers. I could understand why you’d be looking at them.” He smiled.

Bree took his hand and stood up. “I, uh-I,” she stammered. She couldn’t explain why she had been staring at her feet. She couldn’t think of anything to say at all. Luckily she didn’t have to.

“I’m Carter.” The boy said. “My family just moved her from Indiana. I’m looking for locker 322. Can you help me?”

Bree smiled. “Yeah, your locker is right next to mine. I‘ll show you.” Bree started walking toward the other end of the school. Carter followed her. He was new. New. Bree thought. He didn’t know about what had happened to her. He couldn’t sympathize for her or treat her differently like everyone else did. To him, she was just a normal teenage girl. Maybe today wasn’t going to be as bad as she thought.
