Snowball-a white tiger, the caretaker of Elizabeth, died of an unknown disease

Kira-mother of Jonathan, a russet and black German Shepard, died of the same disease Snowball suffered from

Prologue

A fire burned in New York, lapping at the sky and engulfing nearby buildings. A huge creature roared to drown out the sounds of screaming dogs. One of them skidded on the asphalt, panting. It was a black German Shepard. His one eye was open, and blood spilled from his pelt to the ground. The cougar he was fighting was ripping out the throat of another dog, uninterested in the Shepard for now.
“Michael!” his mate howled, a russet and black German Shepard. Her eyes were wide in fear.
“Go! Get out of here!” the male snarled, then jumped back as the cougar swung a paw at him, growling. The Shepard leaped at the cougar, howling at the top of his lungs.
The female stepped back in horror as the huge claws severed her mate’s body, and it fell to the ground, unmoving, face twisted in a snarl. She turned and leapt behind a trashcan, then skidded and ran into a nearby alley. A tiny pup was curled up there, whimpering for his mother. The female pressed her nose to the tiny floppy ear. “Hush, little one,” she woofed, cradling an object wrapped around his neck a little golden locket, with the words ‘The one you seek’ and it was cut off. Then again, it was only half of the whole thing. Letting a silent tear fall, she wrapped her tail around the pup and dragged him close. “Jonathan…”
