RAB: What happened to the younger Black boy *discontinued* - Announcement - check the bottom of the first post!
Maturity: I'm not really sure yet, since I haven't finished it, but I think the worst thing is the Inferi at the end. (For those who don't know, those are dead people come to life.)
Fantasy: Come on. It's Harry Potter. Tons.
So far, the only character that's mine is Professor Young. Everything else is from J.K. Rowling's imagination, not mine.
Oh, and this was edited very quickly while listening to music. So... yeah. It's also my first real attempt at third person.
Prologue
A tall man sat on his high-backed chair, the hood of his dark cloak shadowing his face.
“Bring him in,” he said finally, his voice almost a hiss. A door opened on the other side of the long, dark room and two figures entered, one garbed in a dark cloak like his master’s and wearing a white mask, and the other dressed in the Hogwarts school uniform, his sloppy black hair covering part of his frightened expression. The masked one had the boy by his arm and was pulling him along, although the boy seemed willing to come.
The masked one deposited the boy at the base of the throne and bowed deeply to his master before sidling off to the side of the room to join the row of other masked and cloaked figures.
The boy, who couldn’t be older than sixteen or seventeen, knelt respectfully, his head bowed, though he was trembling slightly.
“Regulus Arcturus Black.” The master’s voice was loud and clear, though there were still traces of a hiss in it.
“Y - yes, Lord.”
“Is it your wish to join my Death Eaters, to do what I say without question or hesitation, and to be given an honored position when I succeed?”
Regulus struggled to keep the stammer out of his voice as he said, “It is.”
“Swear to it.”
“I swear by the pure blood that runs in my veins that I will serve you loyally and faithfully until the day I die.” It was a line he’d practiced many times in anticipation of this moment and he meant it with every fiber of his being. The master could see this without difficulty; apparently the boy was not learned in Occlumency.
“Step forward.”
The master pulled out his wand as Regulus did as he was told.
“Hold out your left arm and roll up your sleeve.”
Regulus obeyed, his hands trembling.
The master pressed the tip of his wand to Regulus’s left forearm and began whispering a long stream of words, a spell known only to him.
A faint outline began to appear on Regulus’s skin, a drawing of a skull and snake. His face turned white as the pain of the branding began to make itself known.
Finally, the mark darkened to deepest black, and Regulus let out a piercing scream, shattering the silence.
Chapter 1
Regulus Black strode confidently down the hallways of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, ignoring the younger students hurrying about and chattering excitedly. This was a happy day for them, being the last day of summer term. Tomorrow they’d all be on the Hogwarts Express on the way back home for the summer.
But tomorrow, Regulus would be on a different journey. He was graduating Hogwarts that very night, and as soon as he was released from the teachers’ authority, he was to report to the Dark Lord and receive his first real mission as a Death Eater.
He spoke the password before he was even at the common room entrance and the seemingly empty wall opened, revealing the end-of-exams party that was happening inside.
He slipped through the crowd, his Mark itching with anticipation. He stepped inside his dorm and closed and latched the door behind him, relieved that it was empty.
Pushing open the lid to his trunk, he began throwing things randomly inside of it. He tapped the edge with his wand, magically expanding the inside though the outside showed no difference, to create more space.
Finally, he slammed it shut, locked it carefully, and sat down on his bed, having nothing better to do until the feast began and he could sneak away.
The cloudless blue sky outside his window slowly darkened until it was velvety black and twinkling with silver stars.
Regulus flicked his wand lazily towards his heavy trunk, muttering the spell that would make it light. He waved his wand again, making it hover in midair at knee-level, and grabbed his broomstick with the hand not holding his wand.
He left the dormitory quietly, passing through the empty common room and out into the dungeons. He navigated the halls automatically, hardly paying attention to where he was going. His mind was on his master. What would the Dark Lord set for his first assignment?
He reached the top of the staircase and emerged into the entrance hall. The clatter and laughter of the feast echoed from Great Hall. Ignoring it, Regulus headed straight for the front doors, pushing them open carefully and shutting them slowly so they wouldn’t make a sound. Luckily, the ancient hinges didn’t creak.
“Mr. Black, what on earth are you doing?”
Regulus spun around and found himself face to face with Professor Young, who, contrary to his name, was quite old and wrinkly.
“I just, er, wanted to do a bit of flying,” Regulus lied quickly, hoping it was too dark for Professor Young’s failing sight to see his trunk. “You know, one last time before I graduate.”
Professor Young hesitated, then nodded. “Yes, I see. Of course. Go ahead.” And he left without another word.
Breathing a sigh of relief, Regulus lashed his trunk to the end of his broomstick and mounted it himself, kicking off from the ground. The cool nighttime wind whipped through his dark hair as he soared over the grounds, giving him strength for whatever lay ahead.
He was free!
Chapter 2
“Malfoy! Black! Nott!”
The three whose names the Dark Lord had called stepped forward and knelt at his feet.
“The rest of you, wait in the hall.” The room was emptied in an instant as all the Death Eaters rushed to obey their master’s order.
The Dark Lord stared down at them, prolonging their anticipation. Finally, he said, “You will go to the house of the Bones family. You will kill them. All.”
“Yes, Lord,” they murmured.
“Well, what are you waiting for? Go!”
Bowing one last time, the three hurried off.
Lucius Malfoy was several years older than Regulus, and in the latter’s opinion, too stuck-up for his own good. Nott was much older than either of them, having joined the Death Eaters five or six years before Regulus was born.
They Apparated to down the street from the Bones residence.
“Malfoy, guard the back door and make sure they don’t escape,” Nott instructed as they snuck into the yard. “Black, the front.”
Regulus could tell Lucius wasn’t happy about being ordered around, but he moved silently around to the back of the house.
Nott drew his wand, striding confidently up to the front porch. “Alohomora,” he said. The lock gave a gentle click and the door swung open.
He slipped inside and Regulus followed, closing the door gently behind him. He pulled out his wand as well.
Nott crept towards the door to the kitchen, where voices and laughter were echoing around the large house. He opened the door just a crack. He whispered two words and a jet of green light shot from his wand.
Voices turned to shouts. Laughter turned to panic. Another jet of green light came from Nott’s wand. More shouts. Suddenly three people all burst through the door at once, knocking Nott to one side. They were heading straight for Regulus.
He raised his wand, his hand trembling. Could he do it? Could he kill them?
His moment of hesitation cost him. One of the Bones drew his own wand and pointed it at Regulus.
“Stupefy!” she shouted. There was a flash of red light and everything went black.
Chapter 3
Regulus came to on the floor of the Bones’ house. Lucius Malfoy was leaning over him, leering unpleasantly.
“You let them escape, Black,” he sneered. “The Dark Lord will take your life for this. We only got two.”
Regulus sat up. glaring at him.
“He’ll hold you and Nott responsible too. It was your mission just as much as mine.”
“I’m sure he’ll understand,” he replied, although he didn’t look so certain. “After all, Nott’s a witness to your... ah... hesitation.”
“The Dark Lord doesn’t accept excuses, Malfoy.”
Regulus got to his feet and brushed himself off contemptuously.
“We need to get out before the Aurors get here,” Nott said, pocketing his wand. “Malfoy, you take Black. I’m sure the Dark Lord will want a word or two.” He Disapparated.
“I can Apparate by myself!” Regulus protested as Malfoy grabbed his arm, rather tighter than necessary.
“Oh, but how can we trust you to come to the right place when you’re so clearly incompetent?” Malfoy jeered, then Disapparated as well, pulling Regulus along with him.
I've decided to scrap chapters 4 and 5. I had a new idea but I haven't written it yet, so you'll need to wait a bit.

Thanks, Danielle. I'm using the HP Wiki site to try to get deaths and dates and ages right. It's actually pretty hard.

It's like Wikipedia, except only about HP. And apparently it wasn't me who got something wrong, it was either HP Wiki or the books. So... yeah. I wrote some more at camp today but not a full chapter so I'll try to write tonight.

That's very un-Voldemort-like though, isn't it? He NEVER told anyone....right? Black figured it out...

Awesome! Chapter 5 is up! Yeah, I agree with Amanda, Voldemort wouldn't have told Regulus though, would he?

Oh, and I actually realized while I was rereading GoF, he actually did tell the DEs about the Horcruxes. If you read the graveyard scene, he mentions it several times, and the first time he says that the DEs know. But I'm changing it anyway.
