Blowing Dandelions

Maybe if I read Peter Pan enough times I
can go back and start afresh.
Remember when we could jump-rope over
pavement and not worry about falling?
Do you remember when the highlight of the week was
blowing the dandelions and having them fall in your hair?
Thoughts were things to be chased then,
not items to spit on and crushed under feet that haven't felt grass grow in months.
The opposite gender were creatures to be feared,
and Mommy and Daddy knew everything.
Everything.
I want to hold their hand and swing between them through the
stifling parking lot, and know I'll be safe.
(because I was always safe)
Rewind through April sun and hand-me-down swimsuits for clothes;
and linger over memories of when we had no memories.
Because yesterday was gone and tomorrow was far away;
I want to live in the present again.





I wish I could be as naive as I was at 5.
