High school language? Empty High school language?

Post by rattyjol 3/24/2010, 10:55 am

So, I'm getting to the point where I have to start thinking about classes for high school. I wanted to take Latin for my language class, but my school is so small that they only offer Spanish, French, and Mandarin. I don't really want to learn Chinese, so I'm asking you guys: should I take Spanish or French?

Spanish. That's what I take, and based off what people in my school say, French isn't fun to learn. Razz

I recommend Spanish. nod See, in America, there's apparently lots of Mexicans (like me! xD), and lots of them speak Spanish (like my neighbor's relatives :O ) - so it'd be useful!

This can go either way, depending on your taste.

I agree with the others, like me, I take Spanish and it will be more useful in a future occupation-- flight attendant or something. xD However, I was unaware when I chose Spanish that just about everybody there is taking Spanish because it's easy and it'll get them a free high-school credit (although that won't affect you as much). So if you don't care if you're in a class with a bunch of annoying people and/or slackers, go for it.

Of course there's also French people in America. Even if there are annoying/slacky people in French class, there are probably not as many as there are in Spanish. Plus it can be valuable in the future 'cause not everybody takes French as a class! You may be wanted! Very Happy

Although I take Spanish, I voted for French... But it's your call.

Spanish. I'm in Spanish 2 right now, and a lot of words are close to English words. And I've heard that French is really hard.

I'd say Spanish because, like the others said, it'll help you a lot considering all the Mexicans moving into the U.S., and it'll help you with jobs and stuff then. nod I'm taking Spanish for my language credit too, but even if it wasn't my first choice, I'd have to take it anyway cuz it's the only language our school offers. Razz So I'll probably be stuck with a bunch of slackers again, grrrr.

What about Canada? xD If you ever decide to move there, you may find that there are many more French speaking people than Spanish.
There are even small towns based entirely on French! (Like the one my cousins live in.)

I really don't know. I've spoken French for as long as I can remember so it just doesn't excite me. XD I'd go with Chinese because it's probably a harder language to learn, whereas with Spanish and French you could probably learn them when you're older. Of course you could learn Chinese when you're older, but it's better to learn the hard languages at a young age when your brain's still developing. ^^

That's a good point... I'm definitely considering Chinese now. And I doubt I'll take French...

Well, whatever you prefer! It's always best to pick the language you're the most passionate about.

I'm not really passionate about any of them, though. xD And I probably wouldn't take Hebrew even if they offered it at my school. Nine years is enough for me. rolleyes
