I'm not sure, maybe it was just in my head, but if it 'retired' all that would mean is no one new could adopt that pet, all of the remaining copies wouldn't go *poof* they would just get a little rarer

Twiggles are now retired. We're releasing so many pets and it would have meant that we'd have had 12 possible pets to get all at once (4 gems, 4 old ones, 3 new from this month, the Twiggles), 13 if you count the secret pet. Don't worry, you can always trade for it.
