War of Life Empty War of Life

Post by Cyn431 5/20/2010, 6:11 pm

Maturity: maximum, just no pregnancies. `^^
Fantasy: books that kill, books that revive, deities that stalk those that have said books, etc. really anything concerning life and death

'Kay, last time I tried writing this I lost all my work 'cause Firefox crashed. D: So I'm just going to post this thread and get to work and save whenever I feel necessary.

And as you can see, there's nothing here, 'cause I'm working on rewriting chapter one as you read this! So if you are reading this, it's based off of the anime Death Note and happens right after the last episode: literally. If you haven't finished it I wouldn't suggest reading this just yet. If you have, keep tabs, please! ^^

Some credit goes to Mrs. Twarry Matsuda for helping me create the Life Note rules!

Also, I'm going to try and make it easier to tell what I've added, so whatever was old was underlined.

(complete chapter)
Dai Ichi-sho
Fallen Angel
1.28.13
This world is too peaceful. Of course, it didn't start out like this.

Originally the Kanto region of Japan featured at least one criminal on the news a day, and more than likely he or she was a murderer. One fateful day, that number went flying off the charts. Some time towards the end of the school year of 2006, seven years ago, a figure known as Kira began killing off the Japanese one by one. What was interesting was Kira only killed criminals. Despite that, officials worldwide found it necessary to find a solution to this growing catastrophe. Their answer? World renown detective L joined with the Japanese police. After minimal progression, the police was cut off, and the problem only got worse.

This is where I come in. Barely a week after the police quit my guardian got killed... Well, I'm not sure. I guess just because Kira could, since he was killing innocent people as well at this point. (I still can't believe once upon a time I rooted for that jerk!) So I was reduced to living on the streets, desperate to find fresh food and clean water each day and roughly getting by. Considering I was only nine, that was tough.

It was a miracle to get picked up by Wammy's House, a building I later learned is used to train kids to succeed L when he died. I could only stay as long as I proved myself, though; a couple of guys named Mello and Matt helped me out with that. I've got to say, those were some awesome guys (assuming Mello was a guy). I wish I could have seen more of Mello, 'cause just a year after I moved in he was out the door. Near wasn't my favorite person there, so really it was just Matt, Mr. Ruvie (the supervisor) and me. Near left about a year after Mello, Matt a year after that.

Four years I was alone with Mr. Ruvie, working and wondering and wishing and planning. Throughout the years I'd been in fourth place, even though I had the exact same average as Matt (29, I think). Technically I should have been first after everybody left, but of course they were still alive, so I was fourth. Having said that, I wouldn't be able to succeed L on my own. I had to plan where I would go after Wammy's. The answer seemed so obvious: I should go join the mafia with Mello and Matt. But Near's way seemed so much safer...

"Kira is dead."

---------------------------------------

Those three words froze everything. They echoed off the walls and stuck me in place. Those three coveted words bounced around in my ear canals, made me choke on my excitement as I breathed it all in, left me staring at the pillow below me. He was dead. He was really dead.

Like a game of tug-of-war, when the words let go I found myself sprinting down the corridors in a silky sleeping gown to Mr. Ruvie's office. "What?!" I shrieked in enthusiasm. My voice crashed into the room with me. Mr. Ruvie didn't flinch from his seat behind the desk, although he looked irritated by my flood of words. "He's dead? He's really dead? When did it happen? Who did it? Was i--?"

"Don't get too happy," he interjected. "Near's the only survivor of the house."

I let that sink in, and my lips pursed. "Of course he'd win," I muttered. "He was always the smartest and greatest at everything..." A revelation hit me, and I glared up at Mr. Ruvie. "Are you saying Near's the new L?"

He looked up from his spectacles and nodded. "And I'm taking over for Watari," he added.

That was another huge wave against me. So this was it. I was going to the streets. Forever.

"Near's offering you a slot alongside him, you know," Mr. Ruvie mentioned hurriedly. Was he concerned that I was going to cry or something? Did I look like that? "You're not going to the streets whatever happens, Misty."

Just for clarification, Misty is my alias. Everybody at Wammy's has one. Anyway, that made things a bit easier for me, but not much. Quite frankly I didn't like Near all that much. He was a nerdy introvert that only played with toys, and should be eternally banned from sugar. Ha, with Mello's chocolate addiction, what was the likelihood of that? Yeah, things often got chaotic. Enough about the past though.

"Are you coming with me to Japan?" Mr. Ruvie asked, staring down at me. He glanced at his watch and back at me. "The plane leaves in an hour."

The moment of truth: I thought about the pros and cons. I'd have a guaranteed home--with Near. I'll get to travel around the world--with Near. I'd forever be with Near. Could I tolerate that? Of course not.

"I'll be leaving in two," I assured Mr. Ruvie with a glare before storming right back down to my little dormitory. Everything was planned out in my head. I'd spend ten minutes packing, half an hour thinking, forty minutes punching various things in my room and another forty crying into my pillow, all said in reverse order.

---------------------------------------

Everything was said and done. Two hours later I stood just inside the gates, a small bag of belongings in one hand, the other reaching out towards the spiky gate. At first I was hesitant. Did I really want to leave? Or should I continue the legacy of Wammy's? Just one last time, I had to look over my shoulder and make sure the building was still there.

Go, I commanded myself. You don't belong here anymore.

Aren't I too young? My doubtful side asked.

Come on, Miyuki--that's my real name, by the way--you're sixteen! You can take care of yourself.

I knew I was right. I was sixteen. I had to move on. Before I could stop myself I shoved the gate open, spun around and slammed the gate shut again, locking it in the process. Wammy's was closed.

I sighed as one last tear fell from my face, but it was cut short when something hit me in the head and knocked me to the ground with a thud.
That sorrow was quickly replaced by aggravation and irritation. I moaned and twisted my head against the rough sidewalk to look where I'd heard the clattering continue. Before I took a second glance I thought nothing was there. Then I noticed a white notebook that looked soft.

A soft notebook wouldn't have shoved you to the ground, the little voice in my head told me.

Shut up for once, won't you? I growled as I rolled onto my stomach. I propped myself up by my elbows and rested my chin on the heels of my wrists. On this plain book there was some fancy golden writing—Harrington, if I knew my fonts right—that read two words.

"Life Note?" I read them aloud. Curiosity bubbled up in my chest, and the energy spread to my fingers. I couldn't resist reaching out to turn and look at the inside cover.

I only touched the corner when four clawed fingers and a similar thumb made a cage around my hand. I gasped in surprise, but became frightened when I realized they were dark periwinkle. A scream caught in my throat when I whipped my head up to get a full look at my restraint. It was some massive being with silver fur and pearly white wings. Overall, it was like a silver wolf with a dove's wings and deep, clear indigo eyes. Something about it seemed so fierce, and yet so fragile. So rigid, but so gentle. (You might know what I'm trying to get at, but if not, just go with it.)

"Anata wa tashika desuga sore o okonau ni wa shi tai desu ka?" it asked, tilting its canine head. Its eyes focused on my neck as I struggled to gulp down that dying scream. Once that was over with and I found the ability to move again, I cocked my head to match its. Japanese, was it? (Chances are you guys can't read romanized Japanese perfectly, so I'll just give you guys the English.)

"Wh-Who are you?" I uttered a stuttered whisper, staring up at the creature madly. "No, what are—?"

"Answer my question," the monster pressed, baring its teeth.

I yelped with fear before replying, "I'll do it once you let me go!" What was so important about this notebook anyway? It just had this really strange title and happened to look so angelic...

The beast narrowed its eyes before carefully removing its sharp purple phalanges out of the way. I dipped my head in thanks to it before opening the cover.

"Since you've surrendered to the Life Note," I listened as I read. "I might as well tell you a little about myself. I'm Laela, and I'm an Ikigami. Since you're in possession of what used to be my Life Note, I'm going to have to stalk you—"

"Yeah, I already got to that part, Laela," I mumbled, waving her off. So far in the rules I'd learned I could revive people with the pages of the book, I could kill them with an eraser, no matter what I was going to heaven, I could become just like Laela one day and if she were to kill somebody she'd die. I continued to scan the rules. Further along I found my eyebrows scrunched together. "An Ikigami's nose in exchange for touch? What help does that give?"

"You'd be surprised," Laela said.

Slowly I nodded as I finished the rules, which weren't really anything important. "Anyway, I'm—"

"Miyuki Shiyoru," she interjected. I spun around, partially out of shock and partly out of fear. How did she know? As if she could read my mind, Laela explained. "I'm a Goddess, how couldn't I know your name?"

I blinked. It probably looked like I was confused, and that was somewhat true. I understood, though, I was just a bit jumbled from the exposure. "Stick with Misty," I told her. After a while I finally got myself to stand up with a pencil and the book in hands. I looked up at Laela and got in a position to write. "So, anybody in the world?"

"If they died within the month," she specified.

I bit my lip. Who died this month? It didn't take long to find an answer.

"Does an alias suffice?" I asked.

Laela blinked and smiled out of humor, so it seemed. "What do you think?" She took one of those purple fingers of hers and tapped the cover again. "Read it another time through."

I glanced back and sighed. You needed a full, real name and a face. I'd been lucky enough to sneak out the Keehl part of Mello's name, but I never got anything else out of either boys (or would girls be a better term, or just kids?). So who else was there? Instantly another name came to mind, but I wouldn't dare. Would I?

"So if I brought Kira back to life, what would happen?" I asked, a smirk forming on my lips.

"A number of things." Laela brought out her purple things to start listing. "Ichi, Near would get ticked off. Ni, Mr. Ruvie would get ticked off. San, the world would go back to its oppressed and fearful state, like international communism. Shi, I might get shunned or something for it being my notebook having written his name. Go, you'll have your own riot to face, but of course that isn't my problem." The Ikigami shrugged. "Basically I'm saying not to do it."

I rose my eyebrows, glad I was digging up information. "So there's only one Kira?" I questioned eagerly.

"The day the age of Kira began there were seven Death Notes on Earth," Laela informed me. If you aren't familiar with Death Notes, essentially they're the exact opposite of the Life Note. "Those seven were spread out amongst the six populated continents. To be specific, Paco Sanchez has it in Mexico, Alejandro Missau of Brazil, Maria Bruegetta of Italy, Khana Rio of Ethiopia, Murray Cook of Australia—huh, I didn't notice he was a Wiggle—Tong Jai of Taiwan and the most infamous of Japan. Kira was the first to ever use the Death Note to its full use."

My eyebrows furrowed in confusion once more. Seven Kira? How strange. I wondered why only one of them really took action. I was also a little bit concerned that a toddler television icon was both socialist and a potential murderer, surely not a safe combination. "And Life Notes?" I asked.

The Ikigami smiled. "Usually us Life Deities are more cautious with our notebooks than those heartless Shinigami." Laela closed her eyes and stuck out a glowing pale blue glob from behind her lips and back in. Maybe that was her tongue. "One of the more naive Ikigami knocked it out of my grasp, though. I tried to grab it before it hit you, but it was too late..." She pointed to the piece of paper in front of me. "That's the only Life Note in the human world unless that God has done more damage since my departure."

"I should be more shocked, shouldn't I?" I laughed. Laela didn't join along. Perhaps she noticed my tone was more hysterical than humorous, or at least the fact hysteria was becoming present.

"I think you're more fearful than you think," the Ikigami said. Any amusement on her face was suddenly replaced by a grave look. "Now stow that away before somebody stares."

"Huh? Oh, yeah," I came back to reality and swiftly unzipped my bag to slip the treasure inside and quickly conceal it. I sighed and looked up at the fallen angel. "So, anywhere you wanna go?" My hands flung up to be palms-up and at shoulder height, everything set up sort of like a shrug. "I'm kind of a hobo at this point, so..." I let everything relax and gave a true shrug.

Laela paused and put a claw to her dark grey nose. After a minute she looked down at me with a smile, and with a dash of mischief in her tone she asked, "Is Japan okay with you?"

War of Life Empty Re: War of Life

Post by Cyn431 5/28/2010, 3:01 pm

Originally I'd wanted to post this later, but I really need to restart my browser so I can watch another anime that I'm really close to finishing. So here's the beginning of the second chapter.

(incomplete chapter)

Dai Ni-sho
School

"Laela, you're insane," I grumbled as I stared up at a board hanging from the ceiling. On it there were two columns, one for countries and another for respective costs. "You think I have £752 to go to Tokyo?" (Confused? Wammy's House is in Winchester, England, so we use pounds for currency. To put that amount in perspective, in America I'd be paying around 1,088 dollars.)

Two big purple eyes glanced down at me. "Didn't you just walk out of Wammy's House half an hour ago? Last I checked that was one of the greatest orphanages around."

"I never had a need to leave and buy stuff, though!" I squeaked. My free hand balled up into a fist and thrust downward while my head snapped up to glare at the Ikigami.

"Um, are you okay, Miss?" a gentle male voice asked from my right. I looked towards the voice as a middle aged man stared at me with a risen eyebrow.

"Does it look like I'm okay?" I asked just shy of a growl, trying to calm myself down. "Does it sound like I'm okay?"

Supposedly shocked, he took one step back. No, not shocked, more like feeling awkward. "Well, what are you mad at?"

"What do you think?" I exhaled with an incredulous tone. I threw my hands up behind me towards the pure beast. "It's kind of hard to miss a giant white wolf with dove wings and huge purple eyes with phalanges to match!"

A few other people had stopped to stare as well with tilted heads. Two of them were beginning to gossip over in a corner. The man was the first to start leaving. "I recommend a mental asylum," he muttered before completely going on his way.

I stood there frozen, jaw dropped, flabbergasted. "Wha-What?" I gasped. Madness was building up within me. Desperate to prove a point, I dug my hands into Laela's fur and began shaking her around, making her yelp. "Can't you see this thing? Can't you hear her surprise? She's huge, for crying out loud!"

"Somebody get security!" I heard someone murmur. Quickly I let go and put one hand to my side, the other lowering to grab my bag.

"You know, you could have just let me explain only those who've touched my Life Note can see and hear me," the Ikigami pointed out breathlessly. My ears picked up feathers rustling, and if I had any they'd be doing the same, except much more vigorous than the gentle method she was using. "But now, not only are you going to have to be called a lunatic, but you're going to be a magical flying girl too."

Magical flying girl? I spun around and glared up at Laela. "What are you--?"

It was too late to protest. I was under arrest for my deeds behind Laela's purple slate claw-fingers which secured me tightly as my feet left the ground. Normally I would have screamed my head off, but now I knew the truth. Nobody could see Laela, so I had to keep my cool so nothing was too suspicious. (Then again, what about a flying girl isn't suspicious?) Anyway, I hardly yelped before I straightened myself out and enjoyed the breeze. It also felt as if the shrieks and remarks below were pushing me up.

"She's flying!"

"What the heck is this?"

"She isn't human!"

"Seize that woman!"

"No, idiot, if you shoot you might hit the girl!"

"It's an alien!"

"WOULD YOU SHUT UP ABOUT THE STUPID ALIENS?!"

Okay, I don't know what relevance that last one had to the situation, but I heard it, so it helped. A smile lifted my cheeks as I soared higher. For the first time all day, I felt special. No one else could bring people back to life with a notebook. Nobody else could see Laela, or hear her, or even knew Ikigami like her existed. Or that any of this existed for that matter. Just for fun, I wriggled my arms out from their prison and let them feel the air rush by the hairs on my arms. My eyes fluttered closed and a grin spread on my face. At this point I could tell I looked incredibly horrific (if a Japanese blonde girl can fly around, what will they do next?) as I listened to more comments below about flying girls and shooting and aliens. So I just held back my laughter and let Laela do whatever she'd intended.

...:::***:::...:::***:::...:::***:::...
