Wordcount Calculation

Your word processors should have a method of counting the words in your story - for those who use Appleworks, click Edit - Writing Tools - Word Count, and for Microsoft Word, you click Tools - Word Count. For anything else, IDK - I can try and find out for you, though if you want. But if you at least have Microsoft Word or Appleworks, I recommend copying and pasting your document into one of these just to check it real quick if you don’t use them regularly.

Match the number of words up with the chart below to figure out what your story would be considered, based on its length.

Note: I got this off another website; I just made it have pretty colors, and I added the bit at the end in parantheses. XD

Another Note: I want to point out that the number of pages or chapters means pretty much nothing - different fonts and sizes will give you huge variations in the page numbers, and who knows how long a chapter is supposed to be? This is pretty much the most accurate way of determining whether your story is a “novel.”

• Microfiction: Up to 100 words
  
• Flash Fiction: 100-1,000 words
  
• Short Short: 1,000-2,000 words
  
• Short Story: 2,000-7,500
  
• Novelette: 7,500-15,000
  
• Novella: 15,000-40,000
  
• Novel: 40,000 and up (although generally at least 60k these days.)
