The Voices in My Head Empty The Voices in My Head

Post by shadowsowner888 6/10/2009, 9:25 am

Maturity: KISSING! Very Happy Killing, fighting, so some violence - expect blood. Marriage and what happens after the honeymoon. Not the honeymoon itself.
Fantasy: "Hallucinations" that consist of superheroes, vampires, and dragons.

This is my second story ever, not counting the Powerpets thingies I wrote, and anything for school. nod I loves it . . . but it's still not finished, though I started it at least a year ago! xP Isn't that sad?

Cast of Characters:
Me/Shadow = shadowsowner888
Taylor = Taylor Potter
Komoda = Komoda2000
Newms = xnewmsx of WI
Jbros = iGrievous
Saddle = SaddleClub
Dream= DreamCatcher81

Chapter 1

I grinned at my friends, and they laughed.

“Seriously, Shadow,” Taylor said, “there is no way you could ever smile like Edward!”

I sighed, shaking my head. “I know. But I can still try!”

Komoda chuckled. “You guys are crazy. It’s a good thing I’ve been there before, or I’d never understand you.” She leaned back onto her sleeping bag.

Newms burst out laughing. “Yeah, too bad for you that none of us are obsessed with Bruce Wayne yet!” Her outburst caused everyone else to start laughing too, even Komoda.

We were having a sleepover in my basement, to celebrate the release of Breaking Dawn, the final book in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series. The four of us had just gone to a midnight release party together, and now were trying to hold off as long as we could from reading our new book. Komoda was going about it easily, being no longer obsessed with Twilight as much as she used to be. However, the rest of us . . .

“Okay, I can’t stand it!” Newms exclaimed, and she pulled her copy out from under her pillow. “Just one peek!”

“NO!” Taylor shouted, quickly tackling Newms. “You . . . put . . . that . . . down!” she grunted, as she tried to pry the book from her friend’s hands. I watched on with an ecstatic grin; my friends’ encounters always amused me.

Komoda then pulled out a whistle from under her pillow, and blew it loudly. Newms, Taylor, and I quickly covered our ears, with Taylor and Newms letting go of the book and each other when they did so.

Komoda stopped blowing, and took the whistle out of her mouth. “Shadow?” she invited, gesturing towards Newms and Taylor. I smugly walked over, took Breaking Dawn from beside Newms, and placed it back beneath her pillow. Then I proceeded to sit on the pillow.

“Hey, no fair!” Newms protested. “I gotta sleep on that, you know!” Taylor pointed and laughed.

I sighed fakely, saying, “Oh, very well.” Standing up, I sauntered back over to my own sleeping bag.

“Thank you,” Newms said, sounding very ungrateful, and she quickly fluffed her pillow. Flopping back, she then shrouded herself with the covers, pulling them all the way up over her head. Taylor snuck over, and discreetly swiped Breaking Dawn out from under the pillow to place it on the laundry table nearby.

“HEY! WHERE IS IT?!” came Newms’s outburst, muffled by the covers. She threw them off, glaring at us, and especially at Taylor behind her. The three of us started laughing hysterically.

Suddenly, we heard footsteps coming downstairs. Taylor and Newms shrieked, diving for cover, while Komoda and I just watched and held back laughter.

It was Jbros. “Will you guys be quiet!” he said crankily. “I’m trying to sleep!”

I stuck my tongue out at him. “That’s too bad. We don’t have to listen to you!” Grumbling, he shot one final glare at us before stomping back upstairs.

Newms snickered from inside her sleeping bag. “You’re lucky you’re his sister; he actually listens to you,” she giggled, cautiously letting herself out.

I shrugged. “Not usually. He hardly listens to anyone - barely even to Mom.”

Taylor laughed, as she came out too. “He’ll probably come back if we don’t keep quiet, though. So, I say that if we don’t want him to, then we all try to go to sleep.”

I nodded. “Sounds fair.”

Komoda stared at Taylor for a while, and then giggled. “Come on, surely you know us better than that.”

Taylor grinned. “That’s why I said try.” She covered herself again then, laying down. “I’m going to go to sleep.”

Newms shot a longing glance at her book, still on the laundry table, but nodded as well. “Me too.” She snuggled further into her covers.

“Well,” I announced, “I am not going to sleep at all tonight.”

“Why?” Komoda asked. “If you don’t, you’ll be too loopy to understand Breaking Dawn when you do read it!”

I gave her an incredulous look. “I don’t need sleep, remember?” I showed her the ring on my left ring finger. It consisted of a golden-colored band with a small, sparkly diamond on it - my own chip of Edward. While it was really a ring I’d received from my Busia for my First Communion, I liked to wear it and call it my “wedding ring.” From Edward Cullen, of course.

Komoda rolled her eyes. “Riiiiight. And I suppose you’ll be going to cough up that popcorn you ate earlier, too.”

I nodded, beaming. “That’s right.”

“Remember, the original is mine!” Taylor interjected.

“I know, I know,” I said, nodding with a grin. “That’s why I made the clone.” We knew the clone as “Ed II,” even though his name was really Edward Cullen. Taylor liked to pretend that she was married to the original Edward, just like I had my own charade, and so I’d cloned him to avoid any arguments.

Newms laughed at us. “Guys, just because you’ve read these does not mean you have to get married to Edward. I’m not married to Emmett, am I?”

The answer was yes, but I didn’t bother pointing that out.

“Well, why not?” Komoda said. “I’m married to Bruce, after all.” All four of us laughed together. Pretending like this kept me sane - I wasn’t really allowed to date yet, so it was the closest I got to all the romancey stuff.

Komoda yawned. “Well, I’m going to go to sleep, too. Good night.” She crawled into her sleeping bag and curled up.

I sighed, shaking my head, and went to lay inside my own. I wasn’t really going to not sleep, of course. I just liked to say stuff like that.

After a while, I could hear the steady breathing of my friends around me, but sleep hadn’t found me. I shut my eyes again and tried to sleep, but my mind was still too awake to let me. Opening my eyes, I turned over to find a more comfortable position, but sighed. This was useless. So I gave up, and glared at the darkness.

The minutes ticked by, excrutiatingly slow. But I still wasn’t a bit tired. I considered going over to the computers and getting on one for an all-nighter . . . then I decided against it. I did want to get at least some sleep.

Eventually I managed to relax. I was just about to drift into sleep, when I heard a startled gasp. I hurriedly sat up in shock.

“Shadow?” Taylor’s frightened voice asked.

I yawned. “Yeah . . . what happened?”

“There was . . . I was at the party,” she said breathlessly, “and suddenly I heard this voice. He whispered my name, and I saw a pair of eyes. Golden eyes.”

I blinked, suddenly feeling creeped out, and looked around us to make sure that nothing was hiding in the darkness.

“The voice sounded like Edward’s,” Taylor added.

I shivered. “But Edward’s not real. It had to have just been a dream.”

She nodded. “I know. But I swear, it was the most real dream I’ve ever had.”

I shrugged. “It probably would’ve felt like that to me, too, seeing how much I wish Twilight was real.” Then I snorted, adding, “But vampires don’t exist, unfortunately. And neither do werewolves.”

She nodded again, and seemed a bit relieved. “Okay, well, I’m going to try to go back to sleep.” I nodded in response, and we both laid down. I started over with trying to go to sleep - it was impossible for me to relax again so soon with this freaked-out adrenaline rush. Shutting my eyes tight, I listened as Taylor’s breathing gradually slowed, until she fell asleep again.

“Shadow,” whispered another voice. My eyes flew open. The voice was unmistakably male, and very very familiar - but yet not. It wasn’t Jbros, Dad, or my other brother, that was sure.

I wasn’t asleep, was I? I hadn’t been? But I must’ve been. It was probably just a dream inspired by my apprehension from Taylor’s dream. I sat up and looked around - everyone else was sleeping, and nobody was down here that wasn’t a girl. See, Shadow? A dream.

I thought I could hear a chuckle. “You’re wrong,” murmured the same voice. My eyes widened even further, and I quickly hid under the sleeping bag. “Don’t be afraid,” the voice said, a little louder. “I’m not here to hurt you.” I cautiously peeked out - but still, I could see nobody downstairs.

“Who are you?” I whispered back in a frightened voice. “Where are you?”

He chuckled again. “I will tell you. But not yet. Tomorrow, perhaps. But not now.
You just go back to sleep. I swear not to hurt you.” I blinked, connecting the last line to one that Edward had said to Bella in Twilight. But I slowly crept back under the covers, and, surrounded by its soft walls, tried to sleep.

Of course, sleep was once again impossible. I tensed to suddenly hear the sound of the voice again . . . this time, it was singing. Singing some unfamiliar, lullabye-ish song . . . the music was soothing, and as I listened, my muscles relaxed, and my eyelids grew heavy. They fluttered involuntary.

The singing paused. “Sleep,” whispered the voice, and the tune began again - this time, quietly played on the piano. That thought should have been very disturbing, but I was suddenly too tired to see who was playing the piano, and too tired to even care how close they must be to us if they were using the piano. My eyes closed all the way, and I drifted into sleep.

XD Lol! Well, anyway, here's more!

Chapter 2

“Shadow!” a voice called, and my eyes flew open.

“Wha?!” I yelped, tossing the covers off me.

“Shadow!” Komoda repeated ecstatically, right above me.

I looked around to see that the basement lights were on, and that it was light out. It was morning. “What?” I moaned, rolling over and shoving my face in my pillow.

Komoda’s hands shook me, to make sure I wasn’t going back to sleep. “Did you hear about Taylor’s dream?” she demanded.

I reluctantly sat up. “Yeah. Last night.”

“Oh.” Her face became apologetic then. “Sorry for waking you up then.”

I yawned. “It’s fine. What do you think of the dream, though?”

She shrugged nonchalantly. “It sounds like any other Twilighter dream.” I blinked, and then decided not to tell anyone about the voice I’d heard. I had probably been asleep, or imagining things - I shuddered. Surely I wasn’t that mentally unsound? Now that I was awake again, though, it suddenly seemed awfully unreal. Maybe I really had been dreaming.

Yawning again, I blinked to get the sleepiness out of my eyes. “How about Newms? Was she told?”

Komoda nodded. “Taylor told both of us as soon as we woke up.” Then she grinned. “No wonder she didn’t wait for you.”

“Yeah, I guess that’s obvious now,” I laughed.

She nodded. “Newms and Taylor are out on the trampoline, anyway. I stayed inside to tell you - and so you wouldn’t be alone, of course.”

I rolled my eyes. “You’re too kind. Shall we go join them?”

She nodded. “You can use the bathroom down hereto change; I’ll go use your room.”

I nodded, and pulled my clothes off the laundry table. Breaking Dawn was gone, as I saw. I looked with interest from the spot it had been to Komoda’s face.

She laughed. “Taylor put it back under Newms’s pillow before they went out. I don’t know how Newms keeps up with her.”

I laughed. “Yeah. Well, I’m gonna change.” I quickly went to the bathroom, and locked myself inside. I could hear Komoda heading upstairs while I changed from pajamas into jeans and a t-shirt.

Komoda and I met a moment later at the top of the basement stairs, right next to the door outside. “Let’s go show them what we do best!” Komoda shouted, pounding her fist into her hand.

“Yeah!” I agreed. “Wait, um . . . what do we do best?”

“Oh, um-” She laughed sheepishly. “I was hoping you’d know.”

We laughed.

“Well,” I said, “let’s just go show them our grand entrance!”

“Okay, that works,” she said with a grin, and we went outside.

I ran ahead, eager to be with all my friends. When I got to the gate, I looked back at Komoda. “Hey, come on!” I whined. She was still back by the door - but then I noticed her frozen, vacant expression . . . carefully, I walked back over to her.

When I approached, her expression cleared. “Shadow . . . can I tell you something?”

I nodded.

“Well . . .” She looked around, then whispered, “I just thought I heard Bruce. He whispered my name.”

I raised my eyebrows, putting on a worried expression. “I’d call you crazy, but I heard voices last night, too. I think. . . . Someone was in the basement - Edward, I think - and we talked, and he could read my mind, and he sang me to sleep.”

Komoda laughed nervously. “I guess we’re both crazy. But what about Taylor? She heard Edward’s voice in her dream . . .”

I shrugged. “We’re all loopy, I guess, from staying up too late. It wasn’t anything, I bet.” I was trying to reassure myself, mostly, but it wasn’t working - not only did I not trust that any of us had been dreaming at all, but I could still hear echoes of Edward’s voice, telling me I was wrong. . . .

Komoda shrugged. “I guess. Come on!” She and I raced out to the trampoline.

“Hey guys, where were you?” Taylor asked, flopping down onto her rear end. Newms reluctantly sat as well.

“Getting changed,” I said as Komoda and I yanked off our shoes and clambered onto the trampoline.

Newms grinned. “That sounds like it was a good idea! We don’t want you outside if we have to just look at you in your horrid pajamas!”

“Hey!” Komoda protested, but we both cracked up.

“Well, at any rate, I say we all go on a walk and look for evidence,” Taylor said.

What?” Komoda and Newms asked.

“Duh, evidence that Twilight exists!” I exclaimed. Taylor and I had planned this all beforehand. “Dented cars, pale people, dark forests . . .”

Komoda and Newms gaped. “Wow,” Newms uttered.

“LET’S DO IT!” Komoda shouted eagerly. We laughed in agreement, and scrambled for our shoes.

I was the first to have mine on, thanks to all the practice I had of taking them on and off when going on the trampoline alone. “Yes!” I shouted exultantly, and bounded towards the gate.

“Hey, wait up!” Newms called. I sighed, and turned around to glare at them. A few seconds later, they raced over to join me, and we all headed out.

They let me take the lead, as this was my neighborhood, so I knew the way around best. “How about the library?” I suggested. “It’ll be the perfect place to snoop!”

Taylor nodded. “Sounds good. There’ll be lots of people there, and plus it’s kinda sacred.”

Newms laughed.

About twenty minutes later, we were finally walking up to the big sidewalk area in front of the library. “Okay!” said Komoda, looking around. “Now what?”

“Shh!” Taylor and I hissed. Komoda seemed taken aback.

“We look,” Newms whispered, wisely.

Komoda nodded. “Are we splitting up?”

“That’s a good idea,” I said. “There’s a few areas we need to investigate, then - the perimeter, the parking lot, and inside the library. The inside is the biggest, so I think two of us need to go in there.”

“I call the parking lot!” Taylor exclaimed.

“And I’ll take the perimeter - those vampires won’t outrun me,” Newms said with a grin.

“Then we’re inside,” Komoda said to me. “Who gets what part?”

“You choose,” I said. “Juvenile or adults?”

“Uhh . . .” She laughed. “I’ll take juvenile.”

I made a face. “Fine.” I didn’t really like the adult section so much; all those grownups made me kind of uncomfortable . . . same with the teens, as the young adult section was in there, too. Komoda just had the kiddy area, a bunch of kiddy bookshelfs, and some kiddy computers. She was lucky. We all went towards our territories, and began looking.

I casually headed straight to the back of the library where the older peoples’ books were, looking around as if I were sightseeing. When I got to the books themselves, I quickly headed to the magazine section and grabbed one. Then I pretended to read this as I walked down the aisles with tables and chairs, inspecting everyone. So far, nobody seemed to be very proof-ful . . .

Komoda suddenly raced up to me, breathless. “Shadow! Taylor found something!” she shouted in a whisper.

“Ohmigosh, let’s go!” I tossed the magazine to a nearby table, and we darted outside, ignoring the annoyed glares of the people reading in silence.

Newms and Taylor were standing by a van in the parking lot. “Over here!” Newms shouted when Komoda and I got outside, and we hurried over to join them.

“Look!” Taylor said, pointing at the side of the vehicle. My jaw dropped. There was a deep dent in the side of it.

“This must mean Edward!” I exclaimed. “At least this car didn’t get sold for parts, so we could see the evidence!” Taylor nodded in agreement. Someone chuckled, someone all too familiar by now. I turned around, looking for the body of the voice.

“Shadow?” Komoda said. “What are you doing.”

I turned slowly back to the van. “Er . . . nothing.” She looked me over with concern, but returned to her examination of the dent.

I blinked, trying to figure out where the voice was coming from. “Shadow . . .” He said again. My head snapped up, and I glanced around wildly. Newms looked at me with a confused glance for a moment. When she went back to the vehicle, though, the voice spoke up again. “Shadow . . . do you remember me from last night?”

I bit my lip. Of course I remembered.

He chuckled. “Good. Now, go around to the back of the building, near the trees - if you would like to figure out who I am.”

“Hey guys?” I said. They looked curiously up at me. “I’m gonna go around the perimeter to look for anything else.”

“Okay. Let us know if you find anything,” Taylor said. I nodded, and scurried around before any of them thought to follow me. I tried not to rush at first, but as soon as I was out of their sight, I started sprinting. I stopped, breathless, when I reached the group of trees at the back.

“All right, I’m here,” I spoke. “Are you going to show me now?”

“Yes.” A figure stepped out from the trees, and I gaped in astonishment.

To start with, he was gorgeous. A dazzling, crooked smile was on his face, and his hair was untidy and bronze. His eyes were a golden topaz, and as he came into the light, his skin began sparkling like my ring sometimes did. He chuckled at my surprise.

“You’re - you’re Edward!” I gasped.

His grin became bigger. “His clone, actually - shouldn’t you know your own ‘fiancée’ when you see him?”

“Ohmigosh. This is not happening,” I said, stumbling backwards until I leaned against the building. I wanted to faint, or wake up, or something - but it was too real to do either.

“Yes, it is, Shadow,” he laughed in agreement, stepping forward until he was directly in front of me. My breath caught.

“Can - um - anyone else see you?” I asked.

“No. At least, not yet - until they know, or at least think I exist, they won’t be able to hear, see, or feel me. They could walk right into me and not know it.”

“Then - I believe you’re real?”

He nodded.

I moaned. “My mom’s gonna kill me. She’ll never let me read Twilight again.”

Edward/Ed II laughed. “So don’t tell her.”

“Well, if you’re really Ed II, then you should know how bad I am at keeping my own secrets,” I snorted. “And plus, I’ll probably get locked up in the psycho ward, seeing how I’ve gone insane.”

“Oh, you’re not insane. But that’s another reason to keep it to yourself,” he said with a smile.

“Oh. Um. Okay. I think I’m going to go back to my friends now,” I said. I hoped he was going to follow me, like I’d always imagined him doing before he became real - Are you getting this?

He laughed. “I’m going to be around you basically 24/7, as usual. I don’t think you’ll have to worry about me disappearing on you either.” I grinned, and began walking back around to the front, with him walking at my side. His gracefulness . . . well, I’d heard of it, but it was just so stunning that I couldn’t help but stare, wide-eyed.

He laughed. “You’ll get used to it.”

I rolled my eyes. “Doubt it. Wait - you aren’t going to, um . . .”

Now it was his turn to roll his eyes. “You should know better by now. I promise I will do my best to abstain from feeding on any humans.”

I nodded. “Good.”

When we reached Newms, Taylor, and Komoda, they looked up at my approach, but appeared not to notice Edward. That was kind of disorienting. “So, um, what are the chances that it really was Edward?” I asked them, trying to get back to our previous conversation.

Komoda shrugged. “About 50/50, I’d say. It looks like his hands, but we can’t be sure - the car could’ve banged into anything, really. How about you? You find anything?”

“Oh, er, no. Not really.” Um, Edward? Did you really dent the car?

“No,” he laughed. “Sorry to disappoint.”

Yeah right.

He laughed again. “So, you’re trying to prove I exist?”

Yes - but it was Taylor’s idea! Wait, so, then none of the others believe you exist?!

“Well, Taylor seems to believe pretty strongly that her Edward exists. But none of them think Edward the second exists.” Another laugh.

“Shadow?” Taylor said.

“Huh?”

“You looked kinda weird for a second.”

“Oh. Um, I’m fine.”

She nodded, and stood. “I think we should go back to the house now.”

“What?! But we’ve barely started!” Newms insisted.

Komoda stood. “Naw, Taylor’s right. We can look again later.”

“AFTER breakfast, then,” Newms said, standing reluctantly. I grinned.

“We’ll see.” Then we began the walk back home, Edward staying close beside me the whole time.

Next part on page 2, post 4.

Post by shadowsowner888 6/12/2009, 10:17 am

Lol, yah, but I changed some parts. Like it used to be at Walgreens. XD

Okay. XD Here!

Chapter 3

“Bye guys!” I shouted, as Taylor, Komoda, and Newms’s parents drove away. Watching the cars fade from distance down the street, I sighed.

“I’m still here, you know,” Edward said in response to my loneliness.

I grinned. “I know. I’m glad.”

He smiled as a reply, and my heart stuttered. Then his smile became a grin.

“Well, I suppose that my presence is too much of a distraction for you to be able to read Breaking Dawn right now?” he guessed, his grin becoming smugly crooked.

I nodded, complaining, “It’s hardly fair!”

He chuckled. “My dear Shadow, aren’t I much better than a mere book?” he asked, tilting his head and letting his eyes smolder at me. I gaped at him, struggling to breathe evenly.

“Aren’t I?” he repeated with a laugh. I nodded unsteadily, and he finally stopped dazzling me and just smiled. “That’s what I thought.”

Struggling to regain sanity, I pouted. “How come you can do that so easily?” I whined, and crossed my arms.

He grinned. “I think the ability comes with the species.” I sighed, and went inside. There I met my mom in the kitchen, cleaning up the mess from breakfast.

“Hi Mom,” I said innocently, going up to my room.

“Hi Shadow,” she returned absently, preoccupied with her chores. I breathed a sigh of relief as I walked upstairs with the unnoticed Edward. Safe.

“Not entirely,” he grinned.

I rolled my eyes, then murmured to him - as I’d always spoken when talking to my imaginary friends - “I have a question.”

He raised an eyebrow.

“If I told her - and this is just an example - if I told my mom that I was having a friend over, and it was you, would she see you?”

He nodded. “Unless you convinced her that I was a vampire, however, she’d just see me as any other person - one that remarkably resembled Edward Cullen.” Edward grinned, humored.

“Okay, how about if I told my friends?”

“They’re . . . capable of believing. If you told them everything, and they didn’t think you were making it up or going insane - or even if they were just ‘playing along’ - then they’d be able to see me. At one hundred percent vampire-ness.”

Should I tell them?”

His eyes narrowed slightly as he considered it, and then he sighed. “It might not be a good time yet - let’s just leave it at that.”

I nodded, but then questioned, “Wait, safe yet?”

He chuckled, but didn’t answer.

Figuring he was just messing with me, I gave up.

I sat at the desk beneath my loft bed, and opened a notebook. This was my writing journal; I used it to write in when I couldn’t access the computer. Edward followed me, and sat at the other chair beneath the bed. He watched me, scrutinizing my every movement so that I felt rather self-conscious. I looked up at him and he blinked.

“Why do you write stories?” he asked without warning.

The question flustered me. “Umm,” I said, staring down until I figured out what exactly to say. “Well, it’s a way to express myself. Instead of getting my feelings out verbally, I can write. And there’s not very many books I find that are like ‘the perfect story,’ so I figure I might as well write that story myself.”

“Why writing, though? Why not art, or singing, or something else?”

“Well . . . I like writing. I dunno. I always read a lot of books, even the non-perfect ones, so I guess it’s only natural that I write my own . . .” I was struggling to explain this; I wasn’t even completely sure myself. “And I’ve always been very imaginative, and I love pretending I’m someone else.”

He nodded, seeming satisfied. “Are you going to publish any of your stories?”

“Yeah - this novel I’m working on, like one of the first ones, I’m planning on publishing. I’m not sure the publishers will think it’s any good, but my friends and family who read it all said it was really good . . .”

He grinned. “If they told you that, I’m sure they’re right. I wouldn’t know, though, since I haven’t read it yet.”

I laughed. “I hope they’re right.”

After a few minutes of writing, I suddenly threw my pen down on the desk. Edward watched me with a curious expression.

“I can’t take this!” I shouted at him, hoping I seemed dramatic. “Why are you here? I don’t understand!” Nothing was making sense. At this moment, I was pretty sure I was insane.

He didn’t answer at first, but after a moment, he proposed, “I can leave . . .”

“No!” I answered quickly. “Don’t leave. I’m sorry . . . I . . .” I sighed. “It doesn’t make sense. I don’t get how I can really be seeing you. I don’t feel like this should be really happening.”

He half smiled. “Well, you’re the only one that convinced yourself.”

“Why is this happening?” I asked, feeling a ripple of fear when I realized how supernatural this was. Supernatural things had always scared me.

Again, he waited a moment before answering in a whisper, “I don’t really have any way to explain this.” He seemed distracted by the realization. “I honestly don’t know.”

I stared at the ground for a while. “I need you to prove something to me.”

He looked at me, interested - then he read my thoughts, and grinned. “So, sparkling in the sun at the library wasn’t enough to convince you that I’m really the clone of Edward Cullen? Correct?”

I suddenly realized just how eloquent his speech was. Feeling dazed, I echoed, “Correct.”

He chuckled, and stood. “I should’ve known. Well, come on then.” Edward strode out of the room, and I hurried after him.

We went down the stairs into the living room, where my mom was sitting and reading a book. I continued following Edward, but suddenly did a double-take at the book.

“Mom!” I shouted. “ That’s mine!”

She looked coolly up at me. “So? I want to read this, too, and I can if I want to.” I gave her the usual glare I did when she acted so tyrannical, and Edward chuckled.

“Your mother is amusing,” he told me as we walked through the kitchen and reached the door. He held it open for me.

“No she’s not. She’s idiotic,” I muttered.

He grinned. “At least she approves of the books, to an extent.”

I nodded in agreement. “Most people do.”

He shrugged. “Perhaps. Or maybe that’s only the outward appearance.” I grimaced at this confusing concept, and Edward chuckled again.

He looked around then, a bit more serious. “Can you lead us to somewhere sort of . . . secret? Some place where nobody will be?”

I nodded, a bit surprised, and began heading towards the forest preserve down the road from our church. When we got there twenty minutes later, he looked around.

“Into the trees,” Edward instructed.

I nodded, and tentatively started walking in behind him. After a while, he stopped, and turned to face me with a smile.

“Do you remember the way that my kind travels? In the books?” he asked me.

I nodded, sudden hope flaring inside me. Would I get to see?

“Well, this will prove it,” he grinned. “Get on my back.” He turned slightly so I could climb up, and my eyes widened when I realized that not only would I see him running, but run with him - sorta. Unsteadily, I walked towards him, half expecting my legs to give out. He helped me on, and when secured, I held tight to him with all my strength. The anticipation had me shaking; I clenched my jaw, and tensed my limbs, trying unsuccessfully to relax myself.

Edward chuckled. “Don’t let go,” he cautioned, and then he took off.

My eyes, which I had closed, flew open in an excited shock. I glanced around as we flew through the forest, and gaped in openmouthed ecstasy. From the slight skin contact I got from my arms around Edward’s neck, I almost thought I could feel the joy radiating from him. Then I concentrated more on what his skin felt like, half from crazed teen infatuation and half from curiosity. It was cold and hard, like ice - except not wet. Just as I’d always heard vampire skin was like. I sighed happily.

It was all too soon when Edward finally stopped running, back where we’d started. With another sigh, this time an unhappy one, I stiffly released my hold on Edward and let myself to the ground. I had to stumble to regain my balance, though; my legs were stiff from holding on so tight.

Edward turned around quickly, a smile on his face. “You liked it, then?”

I nodded eagerly. “It was awesome!”

“Any doubts left?” he inquired with glimmering eyes.

“Nope!” I laughed. But I felt a flicker of doubt then, for a different reason, and before I realized I shouldn’t be considering it around him, I wondered whether I should really be hanging around with a . . . a vampire.

His face became solemn. “So, because I am a vampire, you’d rather not be around me?”

“No!” I protested. “I’m sorry . . . it’s really more concern as to how my mom would take it. We’re Catholic, so . . . she’d freak, to say the least.”

He nodded to this. “She’d be very upset, wouldn’t she?”

“Very.”

We stood in silence for a while, when Edward suddenly looked at the sky. I did so as well, and the sun’s position made my jaw drop in astonishment as I looked down at my watch.

“How’d it get so late?!” I gasped.

Edward’s brow wrinkled as he looked back down to me. “The time just went by faster than we’d expected.”

“I think we should . . . go back. My mom’ll be worried.”

Without another word, he nodded and quickly began leading me back towards home. I was slightly disappointed that I didn’t get to hear his voice again, but I shrugged it off as we went back.

Chapter 4

Almost the exact moment we walked through the door, the phone rang. I dashed over to answer it, since it was like right by the door. Edward chuckled.

“Hi, this is Shadow, may I ask who’s calling?” I spoke into it.

“Shadow! It’s Saddle,” came the reply.

“Hey! Oh my gosh, sooo much has happened within the last twenty-four hours,” I said, glancing at Edward.

“Awesome.” Then she sighed. “Sorry I couldn’t come to the sleepover. Mom wouldn’t have it.”

“Hey, it’s fine, moms are weird like that,” I said. “Dream couldn’t come either.”

She snorted. “Parents are an epidemic.”

I laughed.

“So, anyway,” she continued, “I was wondering if you and Edward wanted to come over for dinner.”

I froze for a second, shocked, but then realized that she was just talking about Edward from the perspective of him being my imaginary friend. Edward had tensed too, but after reading my mind relaxed.

“Sure!” I said. “I’ll just tell my mom, and should I head over now?”

“As soon as possible!”

“Right,” I laughed. “See ya!” We hung up the phone.

“This should be interesting. She will be able to see me, you know,” Edward said, following me over to where my mom was still sitting and reading Breaking Dawn. So she’s the only one of the group that has any belief you exist?

“Pretty much.”

Well, she is my best friend. “Mom,” I said, “I’m going over to Saddle’s for dinner.”

“Mmm-hmm,” she said absently, nodding.

I turned and grinned at Edward, who chuckled and shook his head. I ran for the door, and he followed me. Then I burst outside and headed to the back, where our bikes were contained in a small old porch. Going in, I wheeled mine out, and then hopped on.

“You need one?” I asked Edward, to be polite.

He rolled his eyes. “What do you think?\"

I grinned, and began riding towards Saddle’s house.

“Hey!” she said, bursting out of the door the moment I was near. But then she noticed Edward, and her jaw dropped.

“Meet Edward the second,” I replied with a grin.

“Is that really . . .”

I nodded. “Yup! You’d probably have to see him in action, though, to believe it totally. He showed me how he runs, and he even ran all the way here, though! And he sparkles in the sun, and his skin is cold and hard! And he reads my mind!”

She nodded slowly, her widened eyes not leaving him.

“It’s nice to meet you, Saddle,” he spoke.

“You too,” she managed.

She knows it’s more than nice, I thought. Edward laughed, and I shot him a glare.

“Okay . . .” Saddle said, completely dazed. “How did this happen? Where’d you find him?!”

I grinned. “I wished upon a star.”

Really?”

I laughed. “No. At the sleepover, I heard a voice in the basement. Then we went to the library to look for Twilight evidence, and I heard the voice again. He told me go to the back, and Edward was there. Apparently, he was the voice.”

And I can still talk in your head, he said, smirking at me. I hear you like the werewolves in one pack hear each other, but you hear me like one alpha to another. We’re connected mentally, since I used to be your ‘mental’ friend.

My eyes widened. “And he can talk in my head,” I said.

Edward nodded, grinning.

“Wow,” Saddle pronounced. “Is he . . . gonna stay over, too?”

“Yeah, I think.”

“Yes. Just not for the eating part, as I’m sure you’d prefer,” he said, chuckling. Saddle nodded.

“So, are we gonna go in?” I asked with a laugh.

Saddle regained her senses then. “Oh. Sorry,” she laughed. “Come on.” She went in, and I followed, with Edward trailing slightly behind.

“Hi, Shadow,” her mom greeted me kindly, smiling.

“Hi,” I replied. Saddle’s mom was like a second mom to me, except without the whole annoying part.

“Mom, how soon will dinner be ready?” Saddle asked.

“Oh, I think it’ll take about twenty minutes,” she replied. “So you can go and do whatever until it’s ready.” I nearly laughed when she said this. It was just too weird that Edward was casually standing there, entirely unnoticed.

“Great! Come on,” Saddle said to Edward and I, and then she led us into the living room. “So, what do you guys . . . um, wanna do?” she asked, eying Edward as she spoke, as if she suspected him of saying he wanted to eat her.

I looked at him, and he shrugged indifferently. I could see the humor in his eyes, though.

“Well, we could . . . um . . .” I laughed. “I dunno!” All the things we would normally have done would feel silly with Edward here.

“I don’t care what you do; I’ll just watch anyway,” he said, grinning breathtakingly.

“Trampoline tournament!” Saddle announced then, in a broadcaster voice.

“Noooo!” I wailed, feigning horror.

“Yes!!” she replied deviously. “Come on! First one out chooses first game!” She promptly sprinted for the door.

“Cheater!” I shouted, darting after her.

* * *

The three of us came inside when we were called for dinner. Saddle and I were breathless from her tournament - somehow, I’d managed to beat her in almost everything. I just lost at when we were seeing who could do butt bombs the longest; I’d let her have the benefit of the doubt from pity, for she insisted that it hadn’t counted when she originally stopped jumping.

Edward went to sit in the living room, while her family and I sat down at the kitchen table. Her mom said a prayer, and then we started to eat. I quickly wolfed down my food, knowing that the sooner I was done, the sooner I could go hang out with Edward again. Saddle pretty much did the same.

“In a hurry much?” her dad commented.

“Yeah! We never finished our tournament!” she said. Her dad sighed and shook his head. Saddle winked at me, and I knew that she just wanted to get back to Edward too.

As soon as we finished, we dashed over to put our plates on the counter, and then ran out into the back again. Come on! I called to Edward, unnecessarily; he was out the very moment after we were.

“Well, I’m going to go into the trees,” I announced, heading towards the low fence at the back end of the yard. The trees were beyond that, and it was one of my favorite places to go when I was out here.

“No! We’ve got to finish the tournament!” Saddle protested.

“Tournament-shnournament,” I said, turning and sticking my tongue out at her. Edward rolled his eyes as he walked towards me; he’d be coming, I knew.

Saddle hesitated, and then ran after us.

We walked through the familiar woods until we got to The Pond. “The Pond” was really just a big area of mucky water, but we enjoyed it because of the fallen trees all scattered around it - they were great for climbing and lounging on.

As soon as we got to our favorite tree, we climbed up and claimed our seats. Usually there was a brief battle for the highest, most comfortable spot, but we didn’t feel like that with Edward around.

“Hmm,” he commented, jumping into the tree and finding his own spot to sit in. “That’s very interesting.”

I made a face and stuck my tongue out at him. Saddle just watched with awe-filled eyes.

“Oh, very mature,” he said sarcastically.

“So, Saddle,” I said, purposefully ignoring Edward.

“I can hear your thoughts . . .” he reminded me, trailing off ominously.

“Wow!” I told Saddle, wrinkling my nose. “These mosquitoes are getting bigger and bigger! I just heard a huuuuuuuge one!” ‘Mosquito’ was the term my aunts and I used whenever someone was being annoying when talking to us.

“Umm,” she replied, obviously at a loss.

Edward watched us with an amused expression.

“SHADOW! SADDLE!” her mom suddenly shouted from back at the house.

“Wha!” I shouted, nearly falling off the branch thanks to the startling sound. Saddle grinned amusedly.

“ ‘S not funny,” I said with a scowl. I swung down from my seat by my hands, and landed five feet below on the front part of my feet. “Come on!”

Edward was on the ground in an instant, watching me with a ponderous expression.

“What?” I asked him, as Saddle scrambled down after us.

He shook his head. “Nothing,” he replied, almost wistfully.

“Guys?” Saddle prompted, turning towards the house.

“Oh, right!” I grinned apologetically, and we hurried back.

We walked in through the back door to find Saddle’s mom waiting. “Your mom wants you to head home now,” she informed me.

“Aww . . .” I assumed a pouty look, as I turned to Saddle. “ ‘Bye.”

“ ‘Bye,” she sighed, looking wistfully at Edward. He and I walked out together, leaving Saddle alone. I mounted my bike, and then we headed back.

* * *

“Shadow!!” my mom called as soon as I was home, sounding slightly exasperated. I hurried over to her. She was still sitting in the living room and reading my book.

“Komoda has been calling every fifteen minutes,” she informed me without looking away from the pages.

“Er . . . okay?” That was unusual; usually she was the patient one. When it came to the phone and emails, at least. “Can I go call her back?” My mom nodded absently.

I walked to the phone and dialed 555-2288. I’d always found her number rather funny, and it was a joke between us - see, 2288 spelled ‘batt.’ Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Edward grin.

The phone rang about half a ring before someone answered. “Shadow? Is that you?” came Komoda’s frazzled voice.

“Hi,” I laughed, wedging the phone between my head and my ear as I walked upstairs. “I was just calling back, obviously.”

“Are you alone?”

I darted into my room, and when I found Edward already there, I shut and locked the door. I grabbed a pillow and covered the air conditioning vent, and then after shutting and locking my windows, I pulled the blinds down. “Now I am. So whassup?”

“All right. Well, you remember how I was hearing Bruce earlier?”

“Yeah . . .”

“Well, it’s not just his voice now.”

I nearly dropped the phone. “No way. You can see him?!”

“Yes!!”

I couldn’t tell if her voice was more excited, or worried.

“Well . . . on that topic, I can see Edward.”

“AWESOME!!” she shrieked. This time, I did drop the phone.

Hurriedly returning it to my ear, I whined, “That was loud!”

“Oh . . . sorry.”

“Well, we have to get together tomorrow! You and me - and Edward and Bruce - and Saddle and Newms and Taylor and Dream!”

“You’re right! We need to figure out why this is happening. And plus, I’m pretty sure they’d love to meet Bruce and Edward!”

I nodded, then remembered she couldn’t see me. “Yeah - how about noon, your place?”

“Sounds good. You go call Saddle and Newms, then, and I’ll get Taylor and Dream. Bye!” She hung up before I could agree.

I moaned. “Why didn’t Komoda call Saddle first? I was just over there!”

Edward grinned. “How about I call her for you, then, and you can call Newms when I’m done?”

I thought about it, and then nodded. “Thanks!” He took the phone from me, and then I flopped onto the bed to wait. Edward dialed Saddle’s number, and then waited for her to pick up. Oh - be vague. Don’t tell her why she has to go over there.

He grinned. No problem.

After a moment, he said, “Hello, Saddle. This is Edward.” He paused a moment, and continued. “There’s been an interesting situation for Komoda, something she needs to share with you and the others.” Another pause, now - this time, unlike last time, I actually could hear Saddle’s voice coming from the phone, although I couldn’t make out the words. Then Edward laughed. “I’m afraid I can’t tell you; I’m supposed to make you find out. We’re arranging to meet at Komoda’s place, tomorrow at noon. Can you make it?” He listened again, and then nodded. “Fantastic. We’ll see you there, then.” He hung up the phone, and tossed it to me.

I had to hold back laughter. “This is gonna be good.”

Post by shadowsowner888 6/15/2009, 2:37 pm

Sad Oh no!! That's not good.

XD Well, um, I'll post some more!

Chapter 5

Edward and I showed up at Komoda’s door the next day, precisely at noon, to find Newms there - asleep on one of the porch chairs.

“Newms!! What are you doing?!” I hissed in a loud whisper, and she awoke with a start.

“Wha?”

“What are you doing?” I repeated.

“Oh, uh, nothing,” she said, yawning and stretching. I rolled my eyes. She’d probably come over wayyyyyy early - like midnight.

“Well, shall we?” Edward said, gesturing towards the door.

“Oh, uh, Newms - meet Edward.”

For a second, Newms eyed me like I was insane. But then I pointed to Edward, and all of a sudden, he became visible.

“Whoa!!” she yelped, jumping up, an action which caused the chair to tip over.

“Nice to meet you, Newms,” he said, holding out his hand to her. She gingerly shook it, seeming uncertain of what exactly was going on.

I knocked while they greeted each other, and Komoda opened the door. “You’re here!! Did Taylor and Saddle and Dream show yet?” She held the door open for us to walk inside, peering curiously around outside as she did so. She eyed Edward speculatively when he entered.

“Nope,” Newms informed her, plopping down into the nearest seat.

“Well, we’re waiting then,” Komoda announced matter-of-factly.

“Aww, no fair!” I whined.

Komoda rolled her eyes. “Just be patient, Shadow. We’ll start in fifteen minutes if Taylor and Dream don’t show.”

“What about Saddle?”

“That’s not really a problem.” Just then there was a knock on the door, and Komoda strolled over to it. I turned around to see Saddle through the window.

“Hi Saddle!” Komoda said, opening the door for her. When Saddle was in, Komoda looked outside. Then, for some reason, she shut and locked the solid wood door.

“Hey, let me in!” shouted a muffled voice, and then there ws a pounding on the door.

Komoda stared at her watch. “Three . . . two . . . one . . .” And then she opened the door in one quick movement. Taylor fell in over the threshold, and Newms and I applauded.

“Ten for the dive, but two for the landing!” I announced.

“Nine for the dive, and twenty for the landing!” Newms countered.

I gave her a weird look. “You can’t give out twenty!”

“That’s not important, guys,” Komoda said with warning in her tone. “Do you want to meet Bruce or not?” She crossed her arms.

Then, finally, Dream arrived. “We’re all here!” I sang joyously, as Komoda let her in.

“Hi,” she laughed.

“Oh, yeah, Taylor and Dream - meet Edward,” I said, pointing at him. Taylor’s eyes grew wide, and Dream raised her eyebrows in shock.

“Hi,” Taylor said dreamily.

“Hello,” Edward said, crossing the room to shake her hand. Taylor attempted to hold onto his hand, but he withdrew unhindered. He shook Dream’s hand next, and then went back to my side.

Ahem,” Komoda said. “Do you want Bruce or not?”

Saddle's eyes widened. I couldn't tell if she was weirded out or surprised, but this was the first thing she'd found out about being here. I was so mean to her.

“Duh!” Taylor said. “I wouldn’t be here otherwise!”

“Anyone else besides Taylor?”

“I do,” I muttered, reluctantly giving in. I didn’t like to admit defeat, but I really really wanted to meet Bruce. The others nodded, too, and Komoda seemed appeased.

“I’ll go get him then,” Komoda said, and she danced off upstairs.

I sighed impatiently, and leaned back in my chair to wait. Shutting my eyes, I began to snore.

Komoda came downstairs, and then stopped in the doorway. “Shadow? What are you doing?” I didn’t answer; instead, I just snorted out an even louder snore. Suddenly, someone pulled my eyes open, and I scrambled to my feet in shock.

“Hi,” said Newms, beaming as she stood in front of my chair.

“Guys!!” Komoda said. “Quite goofing off, or you can’t meet Bruce!”

Everyone fell silent, and Newms and I hurried to sit down again.

“That’s better.” Komoda beckoned to someone in the other room, and a tall, muscular figure walked into the room. About as tall as a werewolf, maybe? I studied his face, and then nodded to myself. This was definitely Batman. Or Bruce Wayne.

“Everyone, this is Bruce,” Komoda said with an ecstatic grin. “Bruce, this is Shadow, Edward, Taylor, Saddle, Dream, and Newms.” She pointed to each of us as we were introduced.

“Taylor Cullen!” she blurted out. “That’s me.” Taylor nodded as she spoke, smiling a little bit.

Bruce stared at her as if she were crazy. Then, finally, he said, “Hello,” glancing around the room. “So, you are Shadow?” he said, walking up to me.

“Yeah. Soon to be - uh, I mean, yeah. Shadow.” I’d been about to say ‘soon to be Shadow Cullen,’ but . . . was it still like that? Now that Edward was real . . . it didn’t seem like I’d really given him very much choice. Can we discuss this afterwards? I asked him.

He laughed in my mind, replying, Sure.

“Nice to meet you,” said Bruce, oblivious to my thoughts. We shook hands. Then he went around the room, doing a similar procedure with everyone. But when he got to Edward, he suddenly froze, an immense expression of hatred filling his face.

Edward . . . ? I asked. I didn’t like the way Bruce was looking at him.

It’s fine, he reassured me. Then he spoke aloud to Bruce, with a pleasant yet cautious, “Hello.”

“Vampire!” Bruce spat - if he’d been one himself, he very likely would’ve attacked Edward. “What is this doing here?”

“I’m with Shadow,” he said curtly.

“I wasn’t talking to you, demon,” Bruce snapped. He walked over to Komoda and demanded, “Is he staying? The vampire?”

“Yes . . .” she said with confusion.

“Well, then I want you to wear this if it must be that way.” He pulled a cross on a string out from a pocket, and handed it to her.

I wanted to laugh - this was just ridiculous. Bruce had obviously been hanging around with the wrong sort of vampires. He didn’t know what he was getting himself into. “Hey, Komoda, can I see that?” I asked, holding back laughter.

“Uhh . . . sure.” She held it out to me, and I took it, peering closely at the crucifix. I pretended to examine it, and then said, “Hey, Edward. Can you figure out what this means?” There’s nothing to interpret, I warned him. This is just for fun.

Edward suppressed a grin as he took the cross from me, by the string. Bruce stared in disbelief as Edward fingered it, and then held it up to his face. “Very interesting,” he said, musing over the same nonexistent marking.

“What kind of unholy trickery is this?!” Bruce demanded angrily, clenching his fists.

“Um . . . Bruce, these aren’t normal vampires,” Komoda explained. “Most of them are good-”

“Vampires are never good,” he interrupted venomously.

“Not true!!” I protested, leaping to my feet with sudden rage. “Vampires can so be good, if they don’t drink human blood!”

“I agree!” Taylor said, coming over to me. “You have a lot of prejudice, Bruce.”

“Vampires are evil,” he replied, sternly glaring at us. “They can’t be trusted - ever.”

“I disagree!”

“Shadow, maybe we should go,” Edward murmured behind me. “If there’s going to be trouble . . .”

Do we have to? As much as it was irking me to have Bruce so . . . anti-vampire, I really was enjoying getting to meet him rather than just hearing Komoda talk about her fiancée all the time as I’d done for Edward . . . then I suppressed another sigh. How was that going to work out for Edward and I?

We should.

With a sigh, I nodded. “Fine, then. Bruce, have it your way. Edward and I will be going now.”

“Good riddance.”

Komoda smacked his arm. “Be nice!” Bruce muttered something in response, and Edward and I made our escape.

That's good! Smile

XD Lol, it won't all fit, and I want to keep you guys reading. I find that people are less likely to read stories all in one go if there's this super-long post. And yep, I do have new stuff. Very Happy
