What do you guys think? Do you think the Preface and the Chapter are similar enough? The chapter is like the remake of the preface and I just want your opinions on if they are similar enough.
Preface
A girl is running. Each step she takes brings her farther away from everything she has known. Everything that she wishes not to know. Everything she hates. She is running from her life and all the pain it has brought her. But now is not a time to remember it and mourn for the past. Her feet move faster as she picks up the pace, running much harder now, pushing herself to the utmost speed she can possibly go. The cold salt from the ocean breeze is whipping strands of her dark hair back, stinging her face. She runs as if her very life depends on it and it that is not too far from the truth- at least half of her existence does.
Almost there, she thinks with much elation. I’m almost there. She runs until she reaches the shore. She knows what she must do now. Despite the fear she has felt before, she feels no hesitation. The choppy waves look like ripples of silk to her. The freeze as she dips her toe into the water is only a mere chill, subsiding into a warm tingly feeling rising up inside her. The ocean is calling to her. She gazes towards the sun. It is setting over the horizon, washing its gentle golden rays across the deep blue expanse before her. The tingly feeling has risen inside of her like a balloon filling up with air. She is finally content.
She slowly leaves the water, trailing wet footprints as she pads towards the dock. Then, with no further hesitation, she breaks out into a full out sprint until she reaches the end tip. Once she is there, she takes a deep breath and extends her hands before her, leaping high into the air, and twisting into a perfect dive. The last fleeting glimpse of the girl is her feet, sinking swiftly into the deep blue Atlantic Ocean. She is seemingly unfazed about the fact that she never comes back up, or at least unfazed for quite some time such as several days or so even though she is going much farther and deeper than thought to be humanly physically possible.
Despite the large splash left above, everything below the surface of the water is peaceful. Everything is quiet; it is completely silent besides the slow, rhythmic sound of her heart beating rapidly but steadily inside of her chest. The fish swim around her; the seaweed brushes her ankles as she swims rapidly deeper. She has waited much too long for this. She tries to remember why she put it off, but can’t. The thoughts soon drift away as if riding on the backs of the minnows drifting by her- here one moment although fleetingly, and gone the next. The tingly feeling has enveloped her in a warm and gentle cocoon of happiness. She has accomplished her destiny. For the first time in her life she feels complete; she feels whole. She lets out a contented sigh and torpedoes farther into the deep, dark unknown of the Atlantic Ocean.
From the shore a lone girl hides behind a rock, watching intently with her cat-like green eyes. As soon as the other girl is underwater, her lithe form, which is clothed in all black, is running towards the sand faster than thought to be possible. She leaps high into the air and falls smoothly into the cold, choppy water with barely a splash- unlike the first girl’s splash- and she speeds along, following the current. The deep blue rushes by her as her limbs paddle forward at an alarmingly quick rate, propelling her onward so she is trailing only slightly behind the other girl, and she is soon overtaking her although she does not reveal her presence. And she follows this way, hiding behind rocks, all the while with a crafty smile on her face.
Chapter XVII:
Beneath the Waves
Almost there. I’m almost there, I thought, unbelievingly. It was too good to be true. I was so close to my goal.
The saline scent of saltwater rushed towards me, riding on the cool breeze as I strove to push myself faster, just to reach the water that placidly splashed against the soft golden grains of sand on the beach. My long dark tresses streamed behind me but several loose strands from layers clung to my face that was slightly damp and sticky from the salt on the ocean zephyrs.
My lungs burned with the intensity of my run as I slid to a stop a mere foot away from the water. This was the moment I had been waiting on for so long. This was the climax of my life, the new beginning to everything I had ever known.
It was chance to start over, to be me again; something I had not been able to do successfully ever since Blake’s death. This was a chance to get over the recent turn of events that had happened to me lately. This was my chance to get away from all the pain; the pain I had known for so long. This was a chance to be me. Not the me someone else wanted me to be; the me I wanted to be. Where I was going, no one would have any expectations for me. I could start over again.
And I didn’t even know what was going to happen after I was in the water. But like I said before, it’s all instinct. I didn’t know what I would become or where I would end up. Or for that matter, I didn’t even know if I would even come out alive. But birds migrate without a clue of where they are going and what it’s like over there, so I would too. And keep my fingers crossed once I went under the surface. That and pray to God.
It didn’t seem like it would be too hard to do. Of course I was in a trance and the most powerful I had ever been before, so of course I felt invincible.
I dipped my toe into the chilly water. Though the surface of the water was rough from the gusts of wind blowing its way, I had never seen anything more beautiful in my life than what I was seeing now.
I looked up at the sky and realized that the heavens were tinged beautifully with an array of colors, a stunning gold base was the origin of the colors, spreading out in all directions. It was overlaid with large wispy orange pieces of sky and to top that off, soft, gentle, rose petal pink tendrils wrapped themselves around the other colors, twisting and curling in a manner that took my breath away at the mere sight of it, a sight of the beauty.
Another look down at the water revealed that a perfect replica of the breath taking sunset was reflecting off the aquatic surface. I sighed contentedly.
Suddenly it hit me. It didn’t hit me hard though, it washed over me soft and gentle. This was perfect. I was happy, just plain happy. Not the kind of happiness that a five year old gets when they open their Christmas presents though. This was in a whole other ball park, so to speak. It was way out of present’s league. It was miles above. Actually for the correction, the happiness came from miles and miles below in the deep blue ocean.
I stepped forward, the water lapping all the way up half of my lower leg. I didn’t feel an ounce of fear inside of me, despite the many times I had been terrified and horrified of the thought of me even coming back here and seeing this place, the ocean.
I backed up slowly but surely, till I was no longer touching the water. I backed up even further, so that my bare feet no longer touched the wet sand that the waves played with, rising and falling, slapping the smooth yet grainy surface repeatedly, following the movement of the tide, reaching desperately towards the moon, but yet still falling short. The small grains stuck to the bottoms of my feet.
I ran to the closest dock and paused for a moment, getting grips on myself. And then I sprinted towards the end, leaping high into the cold, cutting wind and then falling into the water, slicing through the frothy water below me.
I kicked backwards powerfully and continued downward, heading for nowhere in particular, or at least I thought. But there was a very definite place I was headed for, even if I wasn’t aware of it.
For some strange reason, I didn’t have to rise back to the surface and breathe so I continued steadily downwards. Another bizarre occurrence was that the marine animals flocked around me. I was used to going under and having the tiny guppies flee from my shadow. Of course I had never gone this far below the water before. . . . . But I still found it rather strange.
Of course, now I know why they did. Now I know many things that I hadn’t known back then. Such as there was a whole other world of creatures that I had thought you only read about in Fairy Tales and Greek Mythology. Finally, I was where I belonged.
Beneath the Waves.

Re: Similar?
Wow! Awesome job with the writing, Dream. *is jealous* Anyways, it is definitely very similar, similar enough to be a remake, for sure.
On a side note, I think that the chapter was very descriptive, which is awesome, and you used a ton of good words. I can't wait until you publish BTW. I shall definitely be buying a copy, or two. xD

Re: Similar?
These are great!! I love how you did the same scene, but still managed to word it differently enough so that they weren't identical but you still made them similar enough so that we could tell they were the same scene. Great job!
