Once Upon a Time...

Once upon a time
there was a girl in a tower.
The tower was made of stone,
cold, hard, unforgiving stone.
All that was in the tower was the girl and a mirror.
A golden-framed mirror, larger than the girl.
Her daddy said it'd be enough.
It's for your own good, he said.
But that girl looks out the window,
and sees nothing but dragons and death.
That girl looks in the mirror,
and sees nothing but herself.
All alone in that tower,
that tall stone tower,
she waits for her prince.
She dreams of this prince,
as she has for forever.
She knows what he'll look like,
what his voice will sound like,
how his hands will feel when they hold hers.
But one day, when her prince finally comes,
the girl is caught by surprise.
He's not wearing any shining armor,
he doesn't resemble her dreams.
He comes for her, climbs up the tower,
but she refuses his rescue.
No, she says, I won't go with you.
You can't be my prince.
The prince says nothing, just turns and leaves,
shooting the girl one final glance.
One he is gone, the girl starts to weep.
All that's left is the mirror, golden and broken.
