And on top of that Maggie still isn’t talking to me. Like, she refuses to acknowledge my existence. So today, I was sitting there with Kevin, and she and Jake started making out to the extreme. I turned to Kevin, my face showing deep indifference.
He winked at me, and then the two of us made out, fiercely, more fiercely than Maggie and Jake. I could hear Maggie coughing, trying to get my attention, and make me stop showing her up. I smiled, laughing and continued to kiss Kevin more and more, breaking away at least ten minutes later. It felt great, and it made me really happy.
Maggie wasn’t too pleased, but I don’t really care about her anymore. She and Jake are disgusting, and they need to get a room before I kill them and push them into a room.
Ugh.
Okay, so last time, I talked about how I was unsure about what was going on between my parents. Well, we found out today.
I came home to the two of them talking, openly, calmly, which was a change. Which I appreciated, greatly. I loved the change that I could already see between the two of them. I think that was the first step on the path to getting back together.
“Girls.” My parents said when the four of us were here. (Nora was with Brian making preparations for the wedding.) “Your father and I have decided that we need to tell you something.”
Oh no. I knew it. They were splitting up. How could they? They had over twenty years together. People can’t just stop loving eachother… I was so confused, I didn’t even listen to the next part, and they had to repeat it several times before I understood.
“I’m pregnant,” Mom told us. PREGNANT?! What?!
“Like… with a baby?” I remembered Sydney asking, half as a joke, and half seriously. I knew that she couldn’t be really serious… But whatever! It didn’t matter! Mom was PREGNANT! Ugh! Another kid, great. Just perfect. As if having four siblings wasn’t good enough. But… I wouldn’t be the middle sister anymore. Huh. That’s weird… But, what would Nora say? Two of her family members were pregnant? And… her soon to be kid (Roxy’s daughter/son) was going to be older than her youngest sister. I’m not an expert or anything, but that’s weird.
Plus, Nora and the new baby will be twenty-one years apart. That’s a long time. I think that’s dumb, stupid, retarded! I don’t know! Mom can’t have a baby! I’m telling you right now. But at least Dad talked about how he wasn’t having an affair. Well, he didn’t say it quite like that. What he said was. “I’ve been getting a lot of business calls from a female doctor who works at the University of Hawaii.” I remembered seeing Syd’s eyes light up.
“I got offered a job down there.” He continued.
“Dad, you can’t possibly…” Sydney said.
“No, Syd, let me finish. I decided not to take the job, for several reasons. One, is that it would require pulling all of the girls out of High School and Middle School, and your mother would have to look for a job at the hospital, and this move makes no sense, because both your mother and I have very secure jobs in Danbury. We’re not going anywhere. Nora and Brian are moving to L.A. and Sydney is going to Hawaii at the end of the summer. That’s all, don’t freak out.”
Well, this really made me happy. We weren’t moving, Dad wasn’t having an affair, but… Mom was pregnant, which didn’t exactly sit well with me, no matter how much she said that it was perfectly normal. I’m sure it was… But, you know… I just don’t like the idea of having another sibling. It doesn’t matter what I think anyway.
I guess I’ve learned that now. I guess I feel like I’m not really important in my family… Everyone is worried about everyone else; worried about Nora and her wedding, worried about Sydney getting a few scholarships for college, worried about Roxy’s pregnancy and her grades among other things, mainly her persistence in smoking, and worried about Paige’s leukemia coming back. All of this major stuff for everyone else, and none for me. For heaven’s sake, they’re worried about a baby, who’s probably no bigger than a chocolate chip cookie, and not me. This is fantastic, I’m unwanted.
Maybe I should just run away, it might be easier for my parents that way.
Think about it, they wouldn’t have to pay for me to go to high school, college, or anything. And I don’t even know what I want to do in college, not that I have to know. I’m still a sophomore, and I’ve still got Junior and Senior year to decide what I want to do before I actually go do it. Which is nice. I’ve got time. However, I don’t know where I would go. I can’t drive, I have little money, I’m still working on saving for a car, though I’ve got that now, because of all of that work I did for the dancing school back in the fall and the winter.

I clanked several pots and pans noisily.

“ I don’t have any clue how to cook and I am expected to bake a cake for the entire class...” I grimaced as I blew hair from my tired looking face.

My class was having an end of the year party and everyone had to pitch in to help out with decorations and food. I had offered to do the cake, thinking that my mom would be there to help me but she was unexpectedly working late and wouldn’t be home until after dark; I needed this cake tomorrow. This is what happens when I wait until the last minute. Why don’t I ever listen to my mom?

I clumsily got out the eggs and sugar but when I grabbed the flour by the top of the bag, the bottom ripped and all of it’s contents spilled onto the floor in a powdery mess. I kicked at the flour in frustration; causing a cloud of it to fly up into the air. Coughing, I hurried out onto my bike to get more flour, not bothering to clean up before I left.

After I came back from the store, I quickly got a dustpan and swept all of the flour into the pan. Unfortunately I could still feel the fine grains of whole wheat flour underneath my feet.

“Let’s see…. 2 tablespoons of vanilla…”I read from the cook book as I got out all of our measuring spoons, cups, and whatnot. I forgot to read the labels on the spoons, thinking I had the right one, which is how I ended up with 2 cups of vanilla. That was my first flaw, and unfortunately, I had many more to go.

I poured several unmeasured cups of flour into the bowl, along with a random number of eggs, and lots more stuff I didn’t bother to measure; lazy me.

I quickly stirred it as cake batter flew out, making thick puddles on the floor.

“Hey, this isn’t so bad.” I said as I danced around, holding the bowl and stirring rapidly.

Pouring the mixture of ingredients into the pan, I opened the oven that was preheated to a certain degree. I quickly pushed the start button once I had accomplished filing the pan and shoving it into the hot oven.

Once I had waited, and waited, and waited some more I pulled out a deformed thing; I wouldn’t even call it a cake it looked so bad. I tasted it, not caring how it actually looked. Oh well if it was the weirdest cake the class has seen, if it tastes good that is what counts. But to my dismay I flinched at the flavor.

“Too much vanilla.” I said. “Too much sugar.” I added. What had I done to this poor cake? I really should have read the cookbook; followed the directions that were plainly given. Then I would have this… thing.
