The Book With No Name (Chapter three up!) Empty The Book With No Name (Chapter three up!)

CHAPTER 1

My name is Amanda Jennifer Williams, though I go by A.J. because both Amanda and Jennifer are really girly names, and believe me I am so not girly. I have friends who are girly, but that's just not me. I'm the kind of girl who'd rather be outside playing in the mud than be inside doing my nails. I like almost every kind of active game, soccer, basketball, kickball, tag, baseball, dodgeball, you name it. Except football, I'm not a big fan of football. I like playing with little kids, reading books and playing piano. I have dark-ish blonde hair, blue-green eyes, a few freckles and I am left-handed. I am thirteen years old.
My life was pretty normal up until two days after my thirteenth birthday. I was in the living room of my house playing Apologize by OneRepublic on the piano. Sounds normal, right? It was. That's not what made my life different. What made my life different was the hardback book I found sitting on my bed when I went upstairs. It was old. Like, really old. The pages were yellow and shriveled and the cover and spine were so messed up I couldn't even find the title. Then I realized I couldn't find the title because there wasn't one. I flipped through the first few pages to see if I could find it there but I couldn't. There was no title. Anywhere. At all.
I went downstairs to the kitchen where my mom was cooking dinner. I asked her if she put the book on my bed or if she knew who did. She said no to both. Next I went to ask my siblings if any of them had put it there either as a joke or because they knew I love old books and thought I might like it. I have six siblings, ranging from age twenty to age fourteen. Sadly, I have no younger siblings. I wish I did, but I don't. First I asked Annie, she's the fourteen-year-old. She said no. Then I asked the twins, Isaac and Ellie (They're fifteen). Also a no. I looked for Jake, who's sixteen, but Mom told me he was out skateboarding with his friends. Next I asked Victoria. She used to go by Vicki, but when she turned eighteen this year she decided she was much too old for childish nicknames. As soon as I asked her, she screamed, "NO!! NOW GET LOST!!" and threw something at me. I didn't see what it was because I had already shut the door. I figured it was pretty safe to assume that it wasn't her.
The only person left to ask was Nick, the oldest of my siblings and probably the one I'm closest with. I knocked on his door and heard, "Who is it?"
"It's me," I replied.
"Who's 'me'?"
"Shut up. Can I come in?" I asked.
I heard him sigh loudly and jokingly. "I guess."
I walked in and held up the book. "Did you put this on my bed?"
"No," he replied. "Let me see it."
I handed him the book and wacthed as he very carefully flipped through the pages. He obviously liked old books as much as I do and was trying not to make the pages fall out.
"Hmmm, it's strange that there's no title," Nick said handing the book back to me. "It looks interesting, though. From what I can tell it's about a village that's in some kind of trouble and the villagers are waiting for a hero to come save them. It says they'll know who the hero is because she'll walk into the village clothed in butterflies and she'll be left-handed. You should read it."
"I think I will. Thanks." I turned and left his room.
I had started walking to my room so I could read the book when my mom shouted, "Dinner's ready!" and I got caught in the stampede to be the first person to get their food.

CHAPTER 2

Dinner was tacos. And, I must say, my mom can make some really good tacos. We all got our food, sat down at the table and dug in. For the first five minutes all I could hear was chewing. Then Mom started the conversation by saying, "A.J., did you ever find out who put that book on your bed?"
I had my mouth full so I held up one finger meaning, "just a second". After I swallowed, I answered my mother. "Nope."
"Oh. Have you read any of it?"
"Nope."
"Are you planning to?"
"Yep."
My mom sighed. "Can I have something more than one-syllable answers, please?"
"I don't think she's capable of saying any words more than one syllable long," Vicki said.
"At least I don't spend my time in my room dreaming about boys!" I said angrily.
"I'd rather be inside, nice and clean, than be outside running around in the dirt!" Vicki yelled.
I snorted. "You? Nice? Yeah right! You've never been nice a day in your life!" I yelled right back.
"I was nice before you were born!"
"Aha! So you admit you're mean," I said.
"No!"
"You just did! Didn't she?"
"I think I speak for everyone when I say, we're not getting into this," Nick said.
"OK, that's enough of the fighting," Mom said. "Now look at what you've done: the two of you have turned yet another nice dinner into an all-out screaming match."
"Sorry, Mom," Vicki said.
"Yeah, sorry," I said looking down at my plate. My mom sure has a talent for making people feel bad about fighting with each other.
"OK, now that you've apologized to me, apologize to each other," Mom said sternly.
"Sorry, A.J.," Vicki said.
"Apology accepted. I'm sorry, too," I said.
"Now give each other a hug," Mom said, looking back and forth between me and Vicki.
"Awww, do we have to?" we complained in unison.
"Yes."
Me and Vicki got up from our chairs and gave each other an awkward hug.
"There, now don't you feel better?" Mom asked.
"Define 'better'," I said.
"Did I just hear sarcasm?"
"Ummm... no?" I replied. And my whole family except my mom had to struggle to keep from bursting out laughing.
"Uh-huh, that's what I thought."
In case you can't tell, my mom is not a big fan of sarcasm. My dad thinks it's funny, but not my mom. She thinks it's disrespectful, stupid and just flat-out rude.
After dinner I went upstairs, put on pajamas, went to the bathroom, brushed my teeth, washed my face and then I headed to my room to read the mysterious book I had found earlier.

CHAPTER 3

I sat down on my ready to read the book. I looked at the cover again just to make sure there wasn't a title and I'd just missed it. There wasn't one. I opened the book and started to read. From what I was reading it looked like Nick was right. The villiage was in trouble. The people were waiting for someone to free them from their suffering. And it did say the hero would come clothed in butterflies, and would be left-handed.

* * * * *

I don't know when I fell asleep. All I know was I woke up at three in the morning with my bedroom light still on and the book still open in my lap. I figured it was time to stop reading and go to sleep. I got up, found a place on my bookshelf to put the book, then I shut off the light and crawled under the comforter on my bed.

* * * * *

The next morning I woke up to my alarm going off at high volume, which was weird because I thought I'd forgotten to set my alarm. I got out of bed, grabbed a pair of jeans and T-Shirt and went down the hall to the bathroom. It was empty as usual. I get up earlier than my siblings because if I don't I have to shower in cold water and the bathroom is completely covered in clothes. So, anyway after I was showered and clean, I went to room, put my shoes on, grabbed a ponytail holder then went back to bathroom so I could blow-dry my hair and put in a ponytail. When I was done, I went downstairs to get some breakfast. When got to the kitchen, my mom was waiting for me.
"Why are you up?" I asked.
"I wanted to talk to you," Mom said.
Oh, great, I thought. "What about?"
"The fights you've been getting into with your sister."
"Here it comes," I mumbled.
"What?"
"Nothing. Why do you want to talk to me about that?"
"Because your fights are getting steadily worse," my mom said.
"Last night's wasn't that bad," I said defensively.
"No. But the problem isn't that you and Vicki's-I mean Victoria's-fights are literally getting worse, it's that you two are getting into fights more and more often."
"So? What siblings don't fight? It's our job to fight with each other," I said. The effect of my words was probably ruined by the fact that I was looking at my shoes.
"No, it's not. Just because you're siblings doesn't mean you have to fight every second of the day." My mom sighed. "Don't you how it breaks my heart to see you two fight with each other like you do?"
My mom sounded like she was on the verge of crying. "I'm sorry," I said.
"Then prove it. Stop fighting with your sister."
"I'll try."
"You better. What if someone heard the shouting? You could get taken away from me. Or, worse you could get taken away and put in juvy."
"Okay, I get it."
"I'm not sure you do, A.J.," Mom said.
"I get it, Mom. I promise," I told her.
"I hope so."
After my talk with my mom was over, I ate breakfast then went to wait for the bus.
