Laptop
So I'm getting a laptop for graduation. But my parents know nothing about laptops. They said I could pick one, but I don't know much either.
Does anyone have any opinions/experience about which laptop would be best for school projects, games, Internet, and all the other random crap I do on computers? xD

Well, I find this mini dell I use is fine, but a Windows 7 computer would be best :3

I personally like Macs the best. I have a MacBook G5 (I think) and I really like it.

Re: Laptop
I have a great MSI laptop (well, actually it's the families, but it's been 'mine' for 5 months. xD) and it works amazingly. If you want performance, this is an amazing laptop. :3 I can tell you the exact model, if you'd like.
Re: Laptop
MAC. GET A MAC. They're better. They're super super super easy to use, look really awesome, and don't crash a thousand times like PCs do.

I'm afraid that I disagree.FOREIGN?! wrote:MAC. GET A MAC. They're better. They're super super super easy to use, look really awesome, and don't crash a thousand times like PCs do. :nope:
As much as I hate both Windows and Macs (yes I know I'm crazy xD) I have to say that you get more for your money with Windows computers -- why? Because rather than the only way to getting a Windows computer being to buy one from Microsoft, the hardware isn't actually made by it. And therefore there's competition for lower prices and stuff. (Emphasis on 'and stuff'.)
I actually don't like Apple's UI as much, but that's for everyone to decide on their own.
And Vista doesn't crash that much.
Technically, I guess I like Windows. Really, I'd say get a Linux computer -- but even I don't use one. :(::

I know PCs aren't all that bad, and they actually work well for some people, but I've had a bad experience. The past two PCs I had crashed, my Mom's PC crashed, my Dad's nearly crashed, but he saved it 'cus he's a computer genius 'n such, and my brother... well, his crashed eight times. O.o

Re: Laptop
Really, I don't think it matters when its a laptop. I much prefer my desktop :3 Laptops...well, they have less componet space, so what I've seen, is they crash earier because of everything packed so small.
While desktops have the tower, while it may not be portable, its better for keeping stuff and sometimes even making stuff.
But really it depends on WHAT you are gona use it for.
From my experiences, Mac's are better for art uses; Windows is better for games.

Re: Laptop
I'm with Noah on this one. If you're going to game around, use the internet, and all that fun jazz, go with Windows. It may give you the blue screen of death every now and then if something makes the computer go coo-coo, but I seldom ever get it.
I've never really used a Mac to its full potential due to school, but they're a lot better for artistic stuff, like the amazing siggie sellers we have. Of course, you could also get that off of other websites and downloads and stuff...
Maybe you can tell I'm a PC girl. xD Save Apple for music.
But hey, what I do is I get a laptop, a desk, and then I have a second monitor. In a sense it's both worlds... And yet it isn't. See if you can get that deal out of your parents, regardless of which model you get.
Overall, what Noah said.

My parents are getting me the laptop for schoolwork and such, but I'm (obviously) gonna use it for games and Internet and stuff.

Re: Laptop
I think Macs are great. They don't have a ton of performance issues, and they look so cool . . . but the problem is, there's a lot of software out there that works with Windows alone, and Macs are expensive. xD I personally think they're worth it, but hey, a computer's a computer and I don't think you can go wrong no matter which kind you get. :3
Re: Laptop
My mom said I should ask my computer teacher, but I don't know if I should. she might not know much. That's why I came here. xD I think I'll ask around school, though, also. xD (sorry, randomness xD)
So it's basically either Windows or Mac?

Yeah. There's also Linux, I think, but that's . . . not very well-known or widely used. xD

Which explains why I've never heard of it xD

Re: Laptop
It's not only Windows or Mac. There are crappy Windows computers, and good Windows computers.
It basically takes a lot of searching around -- you need the right graphics cards, and processors, and stuff like that.

Re: Laptop
Yes, you want decent memory.
Macs are the best computer on the market. They are exspensive, however. Me and my dad went to a pawn shop and bought a '06 Mac with 111 Gigabites of memory for $525 (before tax), used once by the original owner. So they are pretty high, but we've had it two days and I love it; It's awesome. 111 memory is decent sized, if you want a larger though, newer models should have more memory. But if you just want Internet, games, Microsoft Word, and something like Photoshop something around that memory size would be good.
Also, the internet of our Mac is Safari and Firefox. And I like them a whole lot better than the Windows Internet, I think they're cooler to use.
Macs, again, can get up to 2,000 according to my dad, however cheaper prices are always avalible.
My dad runs two websites, so he knows computers pretty well, that's why I'm pretty sure my info in apt. xD
I can probably get some more info on Macs, if you want.
Windows Hp. Good computers
My dad also has a Hp, it's been nice, but after years it's going down hill.
Either way, I'd suggest the Mac.

Re: Laptop
Well, my dad's a programmer.
Web browsers... well, they don't differ much. I mean, you never HAVE to use IE. I know I never would, other than for testing layouts. After all, Chrome, as well as Firefox, are available for both OSes.
I'll get my dad to type something up for this. He knows a lot.

Re: Laptop
Ooh, on Macs - if you search the website for "refurbished" computers, you can find some really great ones for a cheaper than normal price. :3 The thing is, those were returned for some sort of issues, but they were fixed and come with an extra long warranty for no extra charge. One of ours is refurbished and it works great! It cost like 600 and it's Leopard (which is (one of) the latest and greatest software available), and it's super fast, and it's huuuuge, and it's got around 300 gigs of space total.
I'm sure that post didn't help much, but yeah, refurbished ones are a good option if you want a Mac for less. xD
