Speaking of which, it actually almost was that way - that Near (and Mello) were L's sons. It was one of the ideas the authors considered.

Woot! Near does look freakishly like L, except for the hair color... only, Near and Mello look nothing alike, and since they're the same age they'd have to be twins... Not necessarily identical, but... plus, who would be the mother? And, what's the age difference? I mean, how old is L?

Lemme think . . . this Halloween, L will be turning 31, and I think the DN series ended in 2012? So that means he'd be 33 when Mello and Near were 19. And that means he'd be fourteen when they were born . . . xD Wow . . . yeah, now I see why the authors didn't go with that. Although, I think the ages in the manga and anime were slightly different . . . maybe . . . but I can't recall.

So, I've been wondering this for a while, but I keep forgetting to ask. At the beginning of episode 25 (the episode where... you know ), is that little wailing boy L?

Oh my gosh, yes. :O We could make a big fanfiction together! Dude! That would be so epic!

I'm not sure. That part always confused me. I think what happened is that the little boy's parents just died, whoever he is, and that's what's up with the church and bells and stuff . . . and if he wasn't L, then L figured out what happened and was emotionally scarred because he'd lost his parents too . . .

But the reason I think it's not is the hair. Because there's a scene right after where there's a little kid holding an adult's hand, and I'm pretty darn sure they were L and Watari, because you didn't really get to see L's face but there was a bit of his hair. And it was, like, normal hair.

But that's why I think he's so messed up, because he lost his parents at some point. And that makes him sad. And he knows he'll lose himself, too, in episode 25. ._. And it hurts, just imagining what must be going through his head.

And that's why I think he went in to Watari when everything was normal again. I think he was, like, freaking out inside. And needed the comfort of his loving almost-father. ^^

Ahh. Yeah, I see. I thought his hair looked weirdly short too (and his skin was darker, wasn't it?), but, you know, hair grows.

Ooh, that would be another good fanfic... Writing everything going through L's head as he dies. Or Light's, for that matter.

That's what I'm doing! :O Dude! Except it's really LxLight, so I'm not sure whether I'm going to continue writing it. Maybe I could just redo it so it's only in a friendship way . . .

But what happened/happens was that Light suddenly spazzed out and realized he'd lost L forever and hated himself and confessed he was Kira. And then the death eraser comes in and he brings L back to life and yay! Happiness! And L can't bring himself to convict Light so it's even more happy.

Well he was like four or five then, and he's like twenty-five or twenty-six, so that's like twenty plus years... That's enough time to grow that much hair, I think. xD

Ah... Well, if you don't mind, I may do a oneshot of that general idea... I'll probably never get to it, though. xD

But he repented at the very end, when he was running along by the fence... At least, we can assume that by his expression... I don't think they'd let him go, even if he repented and brought L back to life.

Meh... I don't like the way it turned out, but I have to agree with the writers that something big needed to happen there, and L's death was just the logical thing.

Yeah . . . I only watched it twice, but I definitely paid more attention the second time. It's so much easier to understand when you see the big picture.

L would keep them from putting Light in jail. Because he'd really care that deeply about him!
