Chapter 1
In which, there is a mysterious huntress

Lief sighed as he breathed in the fresh morning air. He was standing outside his cabin, hands shoved in his pockets, and feet shuffling anxiously. He was looking for something that wasn’t there. It could have been the mist that blocked his view. It was thick and moist. Or it could have been his eyes. They were red and puffy from crying. He hated his parents. They never let him go. Were they terribly mean and nasty? No. They just made stupid decisions, and never let a young man do anything he wanted.

Lief wanted a dragon. He had saved up for months. Done extra chores at home, and for neighbors. He had planned he would do with him or her, and asked his parents. But would they let him? No. Would they consider? No. Would they explain why he couldn’t have one? No. That seemed to be the only word they knew. No. He sniffled and watched the mist roll down off the Teagru Mountains. It was still quite early in the morning; even the farmers would be up for another hour or two; maybe three, if they were really lazy. His plan could still work if she arrived soon. But she hadn’t come yet. She was supposed to be here a half-hour ago; she was never late. Lief blinked and looked upwards. The faint, rosy light of dawn was just peaking over the mountaintops. He sighed again. She probably wasn’t coming. After all, the plan was quite stupid once you did some thinking on it. It would probably never work. Ha, if his parents found out they probably wouldn’t believe him anyways. It’s like an 8-year-old child saying he is running away tomorrow so he can go save the whole kingdom or something. As he turned back to enter his cabin, and give up hope, a faint giggle shifted its way through the fog. Lief stood upright, and turned around. He knew that laugh! She had come.

“I told you I would come. However late it is.” A dark figure emerged from the fog; her dark green robes casting a dim shadow across the grass. Lief rolled his eyes, and rocked back and forth on his heels. “Whatever. Let’s get on with the plan; I’ve waiting long enough. Plus, the farmers will be up soon. If we want to make it to town and back, we have to move quickly.” The girl peeled back her hood, revealing ash black hair and light gray eyes that sparkled with amusement. “Fine, you lead.” She gestured with a long, pale hand to a path that she was standing beside. I wooden sign was stuck in the ground next it. The paint was cracked and peeling, but just enough was left for Lief to make out what it said. Town, 1.4 miles.

Of course it didn’t really read that. It was written in the old, ancient language. The old language reads: Tonu, Shey Mu. The above was just a translation into the ‘new’ language, or, the ‘English’ language, as we know it. In fact, this entire book is translated. Lief wrote it himself. I am just the mere translator.

Lief trotted down the path. It was a packed dirt path, with a few rocks sticking up here and there. It wasn’t the main path to town. The main path was much nicer, made of perfectly carved, colored stones. This was the back way, not many people traveled on it anymore. That made it safe enough for the two to travel on.
The girl followed him with a swift gait, easily catching up with her beautiful, effortless strides.

As you can see, I keep calling Lief’s partner ‘The girl’ or ‘She’. I will not speak of it yet, for she has asked me not to reveal it until further notice. Now, on with the story.

The pair soon reached town, it only taking them a mere twenty minutes. They only had to hide once. An old man had been traveling the opposite way on the road. He probably wouldn’t have thought anything of the two traveling but they didn’t want to risk it anyway. Only a few people resided in the town this early, though most shops were starting to open. Lief looked around for a familiar red sign. The red sign marked the Drago-Stone store. It was sort of like a modern day pet store. Yet it only sold [or adopted out], dragons, serpents, and fire salamanders. Dragons are actually a hybrid of the two. The fire salamanders giving the dragons its power to control fire, and breathe it. While the serpent gave the dragon it’s slender, snake-like body proportions.

Lief and the girl entered the shop by pushing through a heavy black door. Antique like markings were carved into its wooden surface. The girl traced them with a single finger, some how entranced by the desgin. Lief stopped, and gently tugged on her sleeve. “C’mon.”

She frowned, but followed.

It was dark inside the store, and quite musty in smell. Yet warmth seemed to radiate from its walls, making Lief and the girl more comfortable as they looked around. There seemed to be shelves lining every wall. Jars occupied the shelves, filled with things I dare not explain. The only pleasant looking [and smelling] thing there seemed to be flower on a desk in the corner; however, it looked like it was ready to wilt. “Aye there.” Came a voice from behind. The two whirled around to see a man. But not just any man. Oh no. This man was extremely tall, heavy, muscular, and quite scary looking. Lief gulped, but the girl didn’t say anything.

“What are you young ones doing in this store this early?” He inquired in a crusty, firm voice.

Lief bit back a witty reply. Ha! This man thought he was a young one. Lief himself would be turning fifteen in November. Did he really look that young?

The girl seemed to sense his distress, for a small smile curved onto her long face. “We are not young, sir. In fact, our age is of no importance to you.” She paused, putting her hood back on. “Neither are our identities. Now, if you could be so kind, please show us to the dragons.” Lief raised his eyebrows, surprised by her sudden sternness.

The man raised his eyebrows, his face grave. He seemed to be just as surprised as Lief. He ‘humphed’ and said; “The dragons are in the back, follow me.” And without another word, he disappeared into a dark doorway.
Lief glanced at the girl, who was already following the man eagerly through the door.
