Prologue
Light’s heart thudded in time with the ticking of his watch. It took all he had not to laugh before the forty seconds were up. He listened to Mikami count the seconds out, struggling to keep his face impassive.
“Thirty-seven. Thirty-eight. Thirty-nine.”
“Well, Near, looks like I win,” he pronounced, a triumphant gleam in his eyes. A moment later, Near gasped in shock and fell to the ground, his short legs no longer able to bear his weight as his heart stopped beating. One by one, the members of the SPK and Kira investigation team dropped like flies as each of their pulses ceased for the last final time.
Teru Mikami fixed his awe-filled eyes on Light. “Kami,” he breathed reverently, prostrating himself on the ground.
Light gazed down at the man, utter contempt on his face, despite the fact that without Mikami’s loyalty he probably would have been convicted as Kira long ago. Mikami himself was too busy groveling at Light’s feet to notice. Light bent down to pick up the real Death Note, replacing it with Near’s fake, and tucking the real genuine one inside his suit jacket pocket. Then he pulled out his cell phone and dialed the police, turning away.
“Hello?” the voice on the other side of the line asked.
“This is Light Yagami. I’ve captured Kira.”
There was a loud bang from the other end, as if something heavy had been dropped, or maybe the man had fallen off his chair. “I – I think this should go to Deputy Director Kitamura…”
“Yes, that’s probably a good idea. I’ll wait.”
There were a few minutes of muffled voices and several more loud noises before Kitamura picked up the phone.
“Yagami-kun. You’ve captured Kira?”
“Yes. I’ve confiscated his Death Note. But the rest of the team was killed before I could.”
There were several moments of silence. Light wondered if he would fall for it. “A shame,” Kitamura said finally. “They were good men. Where are you? I’ll send a squad to pick him up.”
Light told him the address of the Yellow Box Warehouse and then hung up, turning back towards Mikami. The man had a look of horror on his face, betrayed by his god.
His face a cold mask, Light picked up the fake Death Note – he’d told the police he’d confiscated it, after all – and moved between Mikami and the open door to wait for the police to arrive.



Should I continue the scene, or is it long enough?

So, am I writing the part where Matt and Mello meet up again? Or should it be something else?

Umm... I dunno. Dx Something with Light, maybe...? Him gloating about how there's nothing standing in his way and he's now a god? Or something. xP

Okay, here's my chapter:

Matt trembled only slightly as he got out of his car, explaining to the policemen that they couldn’t shoot him. He knew too much. They slowly lowered their guns. Matt grinned and then hopped back into his car, barreling into every cop he could see.
“See ya later, suckers!” He yelled before driving off, away from the pandemonium and towards where Mello would be, with Takada. He swerved through the busy traffic, and came to the ruins where she was being kept. Mello must be inside. Matt thought when he saw no one outside.
He stepped out of the car and jogged over to the cargo unit. He heard a snap as Mello took a bite of chocolate.
“She’s dead. By heart-attack, I think.” Mello said chillingly. “Kira must have gotten to her.” Matt shivered gratefully. Kira didn’t know their names, Mail Jeevas and Mihael Keehl, so he couldn’t kill them. Unless the second Kira found them. He shook again, but this time trying to get the thought off of his mind.
“So. What’s happened so far?” Matt asked, and Mello spun to face him.
“Near and the whole SPK have died. And all of the task force, except for Light Yagami.” Mello told him. Matt’s eyes widened.
“Well, isn’t it obvious then that Kira is Light?” He asked, but Mello was already sadly shaking his head.
“Teru Mikami was the one who killed everyone, and Light turned him in. So they think they have the real Kira behind bars, as Light supposedly confiscated a Death Note from him.” He said, and sounded disgusted. “I think Mikami was acting under Light’s orders, and then he kicked Mikami to the ground like a dog.”
Matt heard a small little rumble, and then Mello spit on the ground. “Um...” He didn’t know what to say, so he fell silent.
“Now that Near’s dead, we have to try and prove Light guilty.” Mello said, and took another bite of chocolate.
“It’s just you and me.” Matt agreed, and pulled out his DSi to play some Super Mario.

Should it be longer? xP

I like it. I dunno, maybe a bit longer? I dunno how you'd extend it, though... Maybe Ari'll have some ideas.
