“What has happened? Why are we here?”
There breathe rasping in the absence of sound.
“It’s all dark,” the same voice quaked with fear, “I can see nothing!”
Still, answerless was the other.
“I can’t feel anything – just nothing. There’s no smell…just-just nothing. All I can hear is you – where are we? How did I get here?”
You are not where you think you are…. it answered. The voice was indistinguishable – neither male nor female, without real tone nor feeling, almost indescribable as something at all.
“But where am I? I can’t feel anything…not really. I mean, I can sense something, or, rather – I can’t sense anything; just…nothingness.”
You cannot sense shadows.
“Shadows, what do you mean? Where am I? And who are you? How did we come to be here?”
You have gone beyond the Land of Dreams, the Land of Thought, and the Land of Reality even.
“But…you are here, aren’t you?”
Am I?
“Who are you?”
You said my name.
“Shadows,”
No.
“Nothingness; silence; cold…?”
None and yet all….
“But…?”
I am nothing…I am shadows…I am silence…I am deathly cold…I am the absence of all physical and mental grasp.
“But I still don’t understand! Where am I? And…and who are you? What are you? Are you a person…?”
I am Absence. I am nothing. And yet…I am so much!
“I-I don’t understand! Are you…you’re not human?”
No….
“Where am I?” the voice was riddled with fear.
You are here, of course.
“But where is here?”
You are beyond the Land of Dreams and the Land of Reality, the Land of Thought and the Land of Song, even, to, you passed by.
“But where dose that lead to? How did I get here?”
Lead to? Oh…it leads to here.
“But where is here?” urgency now lit the voice.
You are in the Lands Which Pass All Understanding. You are in the Lands of Nothing. The Land of Shadow – the absence of light – the Land of Silence – the absence of noise – the Land of Blindness – the absence of sight – the Land of Nothing – the absence of everything.
“Then if this is nothingness…then how come I’m here? Am I something?”
Nay, dear traveler; you are deceived. You are nothing, anymore. And that is how you came to be here.
“I’m…dead?”
You are neither dead nor alive – for each is a state of being, and neither can exist here.
“Is…is just my spirit here?”
Your spirit, again, is something….
“Am I not really here?”
Oh yes, you are here. But you are nothing, here. You just are. Not a state of being…a state of nothingness.
“But-but how did I get here?”
I could not say. But then again, what do you mean by “I” for you, in your self is not her, for there is no you anymore.
“But…there has to be something! Some…me left, or else, who am I?”
You are nothing.
“You’re not telling me anything!” desperation touched the voice.
Then let me put it plainly: you have lost your mental sight long, long ago; your thoughts, themselves, where never your own, only spawn of someone else’s speaking; you lost all your ability to feel as you slowly numbed yourself and turned cold; and you lost all physical things when you died.
“…Then-then what does that make me?” the voice was stroked with a quiet desolation.
It makes you…nothing. It made you the twisted pawn of someone else’s mind which you could not see. And as time passed, you lost yourself.
