The Bird and Its Cage
Maturity; Being trapped some where and really, really wanting to get out, I suppose. There's no gore or anything...
Fantasy; Well, it's a bird personified but that's really it.
The Bird and Its Cage
Quiet, the bird has always been.
Sitting there, in its modest glory.
Wings tucked calmly against its sides,
No dreams that it will fly.
For why would it dream
Of something so unneeded?
It's satisfied just where it is,
Is it not?
Gentle, the bird has always been.
Perching on its small rail, watching
The world through the bars.
Never has it snapped at the hand
That feeds it.
Why would it?
That would just bring trouble,
Would it not?
Knowing, the bird has always been.
Studying its surroundings,
Watching them change.
It knows in its heart it could better
The world,
Fix small things by pointing them out.
But it says nothing,
Keeping its beak under
Its wing.
Why should it speak?
No one likes a know-it-all;
It does not want to fester
A bubbling turmoil;
Would you not?
But after years
Of being contained
The bird is growing weary.
It knows there is a world out there,
Beyond its cage,
Past those thick metal spears.
It wants to explore--
Stretch those wondrous wings--
And let its mind wander freely.
Why does the bird not dream,
You ask?
It has not dreamed big,
Because it has known that dreaming
Will lead only to wanting.
And wanting, my friend,
Will sometimes get you no where.
The bird beats its wings in angst
Against the bars,
Throwing its head back with a screech.
But where does it go?
No where.
Does any body listen?
Of course not.
The bird droops its head,
Its shoulders slump,
Its eyes widen in defeat.
And for tonight,
There will be no flight;
Its dreams are dead.
How long, however, can it keep this up?
How long will it stay at bay with its
Wild mind racing?
How long do they assume they can keep it
Trapped?
How long do they think it will take
For the bird to stop chasing
Those crazy thoughts it thinks?
Only time will tell,
Dear reader,
Only time will tell....
