The girl whipped around as she heard a twig snap behind her, her face going as white as the snow swirling around her. She saw the thing coming out from the trees, and stumbled back, a bloodcurdling scream tearing out of her mouth.
I woke up; my hair matted down and sweat rolling down my face. I blinked and was surprised to feel tears squeeze out to join the sweat sticky on my cheeks. It’s just a dream, just a dream, I told myself, as I took deep, calming breaths. But even as I told myself that it wasn’t real, I felt deep in my stomach that, somewhere, a girl with hair as black as a raven, had just died a horrible death.

Going to school that morning was agonizing. All I could think about was the strange girl with jet black hair. In American History I sketched pictures of her. In English I wrote a long back story of her family that came out of nowhere. But the strangest thing happened at exactly 1:43, during my gym period.
I had to force myself to concentrate for that one hour, as we were playing basketball. Daydream for one second and the next you’d be in the nurse’s office with a bloody nose. Swish! I watched our school’s boy basketball team captain sink another shot as I stood there, basically useless.
“That’s right, 14 points!” Alex said, putting his hands up like he was daring anyone to contradict. I rolled my eyes, his ego was bigger than his point average per game. Alex dribbled up the makeshift court again, single-handedly getting through the other team’s defense, sinking another lay-up. I sighed, glancing at the clock to see how much time we had left, and the clocked ticked past another minute to 1:43. I felt myself sink to my knees and the world around me disappeared, showing one entirely different.
A boy around my age was sitting on a stony floor of a cave, huddled near the fire. He shivered, his breath coming out in white clouds, and poked the fire with the stick laying next to it. “We n-need you Kat-t-talina,” He whispered between his chattering teeth, “we need you n-now.”
Flashing white, the vision disappeared and I looked up to see my team peering anxiously down at me. I was suddenly aware of an awful smell and looked back down to see the gym teacher waving strong smelling liquid under my nose. I winced at the smell and pulled away, standing up slowly.
