So on the bus home today, my friend and I started arguing about if white chocolate is actually chocolate. I said it is, but she said it was just a little chocolate with vanilla. So I was wondering what other people think. I don't like white chocolate, but I still consider it chocolate. Laughing

It doesn't even taste like vanilla, 'tis totally chocolate.
According to wikipedia,
White chocolate is a confection of sugar, cocoa butter, and milk solids. The melting point of cocoa butter is high enough to keep white chocolate solid at room temperature, yet low enough to allow white chocolate to melt in the mouth. White chocolate does contain cocoa, contrary to popular belief that it does not, as it is white in appearance and cocoa usually tends towards a darker color.
Though I hate chocolate (and anything with sugar)... it's chocolate, that's for sure. Very Happy

Yes, there's no doubt that white chocolate is real chocolate. I'm not sure what all the technical stuff to it is, but it's basically made out of cocoa butter instead of cocoa solids like the other chocolates.

But there is some element of truth to what your friend said. White chocolate can be faked and overly flavoured with vanilla, and the cheap white chocolate normally contains only a small amount of cocoa. However, real white chocolate contains the normal amount of cocoa that it should.

If I don't like it, it's not real chocolate. XP (Okay, not really.)
But just because it's made with cocoa butter doesn't make it chocolate in my mind. I'm pretty sure I've had stuff with cocoa butter that wasn't chocolate or chocolate-like at all. I think. The stuff's hard to come by.

a chocolate-type product made of milk and sugar that are cooked

I understand it says chocolate-type, but would that mean anything...?

Hate to bump this, but the Food Network has just taught me something...

Despite that I didn't think it was in the first place, it is scientifically not chocolate. True chocolate has cocoa solids in it. White "chocolate" doesn't, just cocoa butter. So it isn't.
It can't even legally be called white chocolate in the US.

I learned this at the chocolate factory.

White chocolate is just a vanilla mixture and that's why you can feed it to dogs. Dogs are allergic to chocolate.
