Character Names

So, just out of curiosity, how do you figure out what to name your characters? For me, this takes a long time. Is it supposed to?

I suppose this is a form of writer's block, but if you don't think so, you can move it.

I either type random letters and make something up outta that, or go to a baby name site.

Or, you can visit and elvish name, site.

Writers block is a myth! It doesn't exist! So don't think it does. All it really is is not feeling like writing, or not having anything in particular to write about, but you can always write if you really sit down and try. (Well, at least, that's my philosophy now. xD)

Anywho though, character names really are hard. It really depends on the type of name you're looking for . . . fantasy names, try translating a word into different languages, maybe, and see if any of them strike your fancy. (I love Japanese particularly. :3) You can mix the names together, too, to come up with something fully your own.

But if they're just normal names . . . try babynames.com! You can search for names by meaning, so that can be a really good way to come up with the perfect name for your characters. ^^

Ah, Shadow already posted it. I was gonna say use babynames.com. Thats pretty much how I get all of my names.

I use that site a lot. Very good to get ideas from. Personally, I like the Welsh names the best. Just saying.... *laughs* I know that was random, but, hey.

I bought a giant Oxford Names Dictionary...I flick through that and point my finger on a random page. If I like one of the names, then I choose it. If I don't, then I start again. XD

I often just use baby name sites...

I also keep a file of random names I come up with or just really like but don't have a particular use for them at the moment. That way, when I do need a name, I can go to that file and pick a name. I like doing that, because I have such a horrible memory. ^_^

For main characters it's hard. Usually, I keep a document on my computer with names to help me, or steal names from people I know ^^
Or I just use the same characters over again, in different books O_O like . . . Aaron, my guard-guy.
