Voice - A Micro(non)fiction
Voice
I breathed out heavily. My heart was fluttering a mile a minute, and my knees were shaking. I looked out onto the field from the commentators box. It was a bright green, lots of lines, numbers, and of course the signature "D" that marked our High School.
"You ready?" Mr. Murray told me. He handed me a microphone. It took me a bit to realize what to do with it. Though I subconsciously knew, I couldn't remember for some reason. I nodded and looked at the field. He picked up the other microphone. "Please rise for the pledge of allegiance and our nations anthem." He spoke clearly, with a faint hint of sarcasm in his voice.
"I pledge allegiance..." He began. I zoned out.
What if I mess up? What if my voice cracks? What if I forget the words? What if someone laughs at me? What if... What if I do well? I cleared my throat gently and began to sing the national anthem. I could see the surprised expression on the face of the guy next to me. I smiled and my voice grew stronger, sailing through the air with the aid of the microphone. I watched as the soccer players stopped playing and listened, then everyone cheered as I finished. Applause erupted throughout all of the grounds.
"Good job." Mr. Murray said after I was finished. I smiled, saying thank you and leaving the box. I walked up the stairs from the football field as the game started, and stepped into my Mom's car. She congratulated me and drove me home. I was happy, I had done it, conquered my fear, found my voice.
