Cyn's Top Things of 2009
(Not sure if anybody did this already, but I was working on this last night up until I had to go and then I couldn't finish it.... If somebody else already did something like this, credit goes to them for the idea. )
I know, I haven't blogged in a while, and I'm sorry about that. Even this isn't technically blog. I wanted to share this anyway, and this seemed like an appropriate area.
First off, happy new year everyone! 2010!
Before we go out and live this new year, why not go over the greatest things about 2009? These are my top five for each category, and then an overall greatest thing at the end.
I think I'm going to start with... The media!
This features Jason Lee (Dave Seville), David Cross (Ian Hawke), Jesse McCartney (Theodore), Amy Poehler (Eleanor), Anna Faris (Jeanette), and Christina Applegate (Brittany). [Yes, I'm only naming the people I know or are main characters. xD]
4. Push. This is a movie about humans with supernatural powers and names (Watcher, Mover, Pusher, etc.) who are being hunted down by the government, therefore having to retreat to Hong Kong, the safest country they can resort to... But I never said it was safe. I also haven't seen this one, even though I'm dying to. That's one reason why it's not up higher, and also I saw it was only rated one star--not that it means anything...
This features Dakota Fanning (Cassie Holmes), Camilla Belle (Kira Hudson) and Chris Evans (Nick Gant).
3. G-Force. Ah, this was an interesting movie about a secret spy agency of four guinea pigs--well, originally three guinea pigs and one mole, but then the mole left and another guinea pig joined them--with super-high-tech devices that allow them to talk to humans, but when they get shut down they're sent to a pet shop. Little had the government known they were the only ones who could stop the antagonist from taking over the world with every known appliance by a worldwide leading appliance company. I did see this movie. Some of the movie was a shock, and it reminded me of a combination of Terminator and Transformers (a thought my parents try to exterminate ). Considering the similarities I see, I'm not sure if they should put terminator-like things in a (P)G movie.
This features Nicolas Cage (Speckles), Penelope Cruz (Juarez) and Tracy Morgan (Blaster).
2. Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. This is a sequel to the famous movie Night at the Museum. The exhibits are transferred to the archives of the Smithsonian, and it so happens they run into Egypt-dude's releasing-the-Underworld-crazy brother. I have this on DVD, it's a good movie, but I was a bit disappointed with the lack of variety in the movie. When I saw in the commercials Darth Vader, I was hoping for a lot of mayhem, but all I really got was Egypt dude, evil birds, and romance. That is what kept this movie from the number one spot.
This features Ben Stiller (Larry Daley), Amy Adams (Amelia Earhart), Owen Wilson (Jedediah Smith), and Robin Williams (Theodore Roosevelt).
1. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Based off of a book, this movie is about the invisible scientist who finds love and comes close to finding the solution to world hunger all in one day. All of that almost works until the mayor finds a spot in his plans to make the scientist a little overwhelmed with fame and redemption to be nice to his love. The mayor also goes a little overboard with the "solution to world hunger" and practically drowns the world in food--and his body fat. xD When I went to the movies on premiere night to see this, I was expecting something a bit more cheesy, but I was pleasantly surprised with the humor and graphics. Normally I'd go all "aw" at the fact there was a happy ending, but I liked this one's, and that says something.
This features Anna Faris (Sam Sparks), James Caan (Tim Lockwood), Mr. T (Earl Devereaux) and Al Roker (Patrick Patrickson).
*stuffs a cookie into Cyn's mouth* This is a top five on a no-swearing site, remember?
Ah. xD Thank you.
I'm not sure if I was happy Kris won. Either way the winner was going to have a not-so-great first album (no first albums are good from American Idol). Yeah, Kris won, but then that meant Adam wasn't going to do crud--I wasn't a big fan of him. Even though he did end up doing crud anyway... Oh well. It's still here.
Produced by Simon Fuller; Judges: Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, Kara DioGuardi, Randy Jackson; Season 8 Winner and Runner-Up: Kris Allen, Adam Lambert. Hosted by Ryan Seacrest.
4. Dancing with the Stars. This is a celebrity dancing competition--simple as that. I don't have any particular reasons as to why this is here, so... Enjoy? xD
Judges: Bruno Tonioli, Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba. Season 8 Winner and Runner-Up: Donny Osmond Kym Johnson, Mya Dmitri Chaplin. Hosted by Tom Bergeron and Samantha Harris.
3. Wipeout. Come on, who doesn't love adults trying to tackle an obstacle course and getting hit in the gut and falling into water? Enough said.
Hosted by John Henson, John Anderson, and Jill Wagner.
Ah, John Henson...
He is cool, isn't he?
Huh--what? Oh, hi, sorry, not a vampire, didn't see you coming...
2. The Smoking Gun Presents: The World's Dumbest.... This is a hysterical TV14 show of dumb criminals, drivers, employees, partiers, and other kinds of people. The commentators may use questionable language, but they can really make (humorously) good points. They found a lot of stupid people this year. I remember one time I found myself literally ROFLing for a straight three minutes, that's how funny it was. Either way I practically choke from lack of air from laughing at least once every episode, so... Yeah. The reason why it isn't number one? 'Cause it just can't quite top my #1.
I'm too lazy to list the cast, go to IMDb and find out.
1. Glee. As the name suggests, this show is about your typical Glee club full of misfits--well, not really typical, considering they're massively talented. I find it both entertaining and informing, which can be difficult for a TV series. Entertaining because there's so many story-lines going on to follow, and they can get pretty intriguing. Informing because people learn that anybody can join a Glee club, whether you be a football player, a nerd, a cheerleader, a super-diva, an Emo, a--er, I shouldn't name the last one, but you get the point. It also teaches all the mistakes a high school student could get themselves into, particularly referring to romance. Now, it may seem like they're teaching kids that Glee club gets you free slushies thrown at your face, but Rachel gives an example to show that if you really love being in a show choir, so what?
This features Dianna Agron (Quinn Fabray), Chris Colfer (Kurt Hummel), Jane Lynch (Sue Sylvester), Jayma Mays (Emma Pillsbury), Lea Michele (Rachel Berry), Cory Monteith (Finn Hudson), Matthew Morrison (Will Schuester), and Amber Riley (Mercedes Jones).
5. All Time Low. These guys are an alternative/punk/rock band, and have definitely caught a lot of new fans with their album Nothing Personal, including myself. They made a new fan base, a new tune of music, a new album--some say it's a new ATL. Dear Maria, Count Me In is definitely different from Too Much, I'll say that. Unfortunately I just couldn't move them up another step because they didn't make any humongous accomplishments.
This name consists of Alex Gaskarth (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Jack Barakat (lead guitar, backing vocals), Zack Merrick (bass, backing vocals) and Rian Dawson (drums, percussion).
4. Glee. Whoa, how did they land on two different charts?! Oh well, they didn't get number one, so I guess it doesn't really matter. Anyway, the guys behind the scenes got the idea of selling the songs featured in each episode as singles on iTunes, $1.29 a piece (for most of them anyway). It worked, striking them gold. They only hit number four on my list because I wasn't a fan of every single song they put out.
Glee music comes from the television series Glee. A lot of people sing these songs.
3. Guitar Hero. How many games have they put out in '09, five? Six? They definitely hit gold this year with World Tour, Metallica, Smash Hits, Five, Band Hero and Van Halen. A lot of people after playing this game have gone out and started playing guitar/bass (like myself), or at least gotten into rock and metal and older rock (again like myself). Guitar Hero has also managed to add many features to their games. They've added drums and singing, and for Nintendo they put up a Roadie Battle where you can connect both your Wii and DS games, and while guitarists battle, roadies--aka. rockin' hobos--sabotage the equipment. Barring the Roadie Battle, it seems like they've copied Rock Band, which is the main reason it is not number two or one.
These games are created by a lot of people, and the songs are created by a lot of people.
2. Taylor Swift. My gosh, did she get fame! Sure, the album was released in '08, but some of the music videos came later. Several people fell in love with the music video for You Belong With Me, which went on to receive Best Music Video by a Female Artist at the MTV Award-thing. And remember when Kanye got all ticked and said Beyonce had the greatest video of all time? Everybody gave Taylor Swift a heck of sympathy for that. In fact, at the CMAs (country music awards), Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley parodied a song for her--like "don't let your kids grow up to be like Kanye" or something. xD Later on in the show an old cowboy came up and interrupted Brad to say Taylor Swift had the greatest music video of all time, and the cowboy was like eighty, and Brad is thirty something, so all the pwnage in that was HYSTERICAL. In the end, of course, Taylor Swift got entertainer of the year for all the hit music videos and singles, the trouble she's been facing with the Kanye thing, getting a lot of people to like country, et cetera et cetera. So why isn't she number one? She just can't quite top #1...
1. Owl City. This electropop artist really made a breakthrough this year with his hit single Fireflies, number one on Rhapsody's top downloaded tracks list for at least a week, and probably on a few or many other charts as well. He has won the hearts of many with his upbeat music, released his sophomore album-that-is-not-an-EP (Ocean Eyes), and has declared his tour. He helps write most/all of his songs with creative puns brought up in every set of lyrics. Almost nobody can hate him!
This name consists of Adam Young.
Thank you.
You are quite welcome.
This series was written by Stephenie Meyer.
4. The Mysterious Affair at Styles. This is a mystery about detective Hercule Poirot who's called to the scene of a murder, and he has to solve it. It's written in the perspective of his good friend Hastings. What I really love about this story is how all of the suspicion in the world is staring down upon one character. Then the personalities and not-perfect alibis of all of the others start making our thoughts sway--ooh, maybe she did it, or him, 'cause blah blah blah.... We know it's going to be the least expected, right? Think about it. Once our thoughts are swayed from the most obvious guilty one, the true guilty one--the most obvious one of all--becomes the least expected. We're all so sure that it's going to be blah blah blah, and then BAM! At the end of the chapter, it's the original suspect! Of course, there was an unexpected assistant, but point made. So why is this not higher up? Just the formatting made me upset. The book could have been five-hundred something pages, but because the font was even smaller than that of Anne of Green Gables, it was only 135 or something like that. xP
This book was written by Agatha Christie.
3. The Tapestry Series. The Tapestry is a partially-illustrated novel series about Max McDaniels, a special wizard-like student. Does this sound somewhat familiar? Yes, this series, which is still in the writing, is being written in the time of which Harry Potter was really popular. It's kind of like how when Twilight got popular and all of these vampire books started sprouting like weeds. Tapestry was one of those that sprouted when Harry Potter was the thing. I'm considering this 2009 because it's still in the writing, and this year it got nominated for one of my state's award systems. Again, why only three? It was sort of like a copy of Harry Potter. A good copy, but still a copy.
This series is being written by Henry H. Neff.
2. Percy Jackson & The Olympians. This is a wonderful book series based off of Greek mythology, and a big hit amongst (pre)teens. The final book in the series, The Last Olympian, came out this year, and it too became a big hit ending. I haven't read the ending myself yet, I'm only just about to get my hands on The Titan's Curse, but in general I really love the series. I can't find much else to say.... Why not number one? It just can't quite beat my number one.
This series was written by Rick Riordan.
1. The Last Dragon Chronicles. A series with many names, I love how this series in the making compacts several wonderful things into one plot, along with other things that twist around the ancestry of dragons. There are dragons, polar bears, the Arctic world, angels, demons, pottery, death, faeries--I just love it! You can't go wrong with this book unless you don't like dragons and the Arctic. Then this book series just isn't right for you. Even if it means emotional trouble and being close to death a lot, I would love to be a dragon child myself, so this book has shown me. It sounds really cool,
This series is being written by Chris d'Lacey.
3. Surprise Kitty. Admit it. He's adorable.
2. The Truth about Kanye. I never was a huge fan of Kanye West. If you read earlier, or have open ears/eyes--in fact you can have closed ears/eyes and still know--you know what he did to Taylor Swift at the MTV Awards thing. So now everybody knows what a jerk Kanye can be!
1. Rumored Apocalypse. I just love looking around and seeing everybody freak out that the world will either end in 12/12/12 or 12/21/12. It's hysterical! They're taking an Aztec calendar's word as to when the world will end. Sure, why not, we've known for hundreds of years the Aztec calendar ends on December 12th of 2012, and there's even a whole movie on it. Consider the facts. Movies
5. Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Squeakuel. As apparently seen, this was the sequel to the Alvin & The Chipmunks movie. I didn't go see it, yet, but based off of what I saw on commercials it seemed really cute! I'm not sure if it was a cute good movie, though. Classic shows tend to become not so great when you get romance involved--y'know, the girl chipmunks... xPThis features Jason Lee (Dave Seville), David Cross (Ian Hawke), Jesse McCartney (Theodore), Amy Poehler (Eleanor), Anna Faris (Jeanette), and Christina Applegate (Brittany). 5. American Idol. A reality show on finding vocal talent along with personality, American Idol landed on the fifth spot. The truth is they only landed on here because (1) I like to watch singing, and (2) most of the singers they picked were good! I've got to blare out all the bad reasons why they're only 5. Not only did they pick good singers, but they had a bunch of other cruddy ones too. They knocked off the greatest singers too early and didn't use their save on any of them. And then they used their save on someone who really didn't deserve it. All the judges were--um, a questionable word-y--towards Lil Rounds. Oh my GOSH, I mean, they would say "too soft" or "too much energy" or "too country" and all that, and she would take their advice, and then they'd say "too hard" or "lack of energy" or "too hardcore" or WHATEVER it was, and then guess what? The night she's voted off, she does EXACTLY the same totally-criticized performance as the night before, and they said, "Oh, Lil, if only you'd done that last night!!" MY GOSH SHU--*stuffs a cookie into Cyn's mouth* This is a top five on a no-swearing site, remember?

5. The Twilight Saga. It's so popular, I'm not even going to bother talking about the good things. xD So why is it only number five? Once I saw the movie, I realized how not-good it was. Frankly I thought it was a goth romance in color. Now I think negatively towards the series in general. That's why I love James now, 'cause he tried to kill everybody, and he's hot. Thank you.

Society/Gossip
I don't wish to offend anybody on here (massively), nor the government, so I cannot be fully truthful as to my answers. Because of that, I am so limited I only have three things to give for you.

Whew! I think I have enough. xD So what's the ultimate greatest thing about 2009? Is it...

Thank you! Haha, yeah, I knew I had to put Twig up there somewhere.
I got too tired to put up my reasoning though.

I love your blog. x3 It was so much fun to read! I knew at least one or two things out of every category, which made me satisfied, and I agree with a lot of your top choices. Especially that last one.
Re: Cyn's Top Things of 2009
Nice choices! x3 Even though I feel the order should be Taylor Swift at number one. x3 But Kanye West - gosh, what an idiot. xP
Twig!!
Happy 2010 to you too!

Thank you! x] I don't know if I'm totally satisfied with my literature layout. That's probably because it's been a while since I've picked up a book and absolutely positively loved it. They're almost all good, don't get me wrong. But not quite fan-girlie good.
I was having a hard time deciding which was better, Owl City or Taylor Swift. There were actually two deciding factors: (1) the one I gave you guys, and (2) Owl City really made a breakthrough specifically and spontaneously in 2009, whereas Taylor Swift had already been really famous a few years back.
Couldn't have said it appropriately better.
GO TWIG!
Thank you, Ari! x3
