He nodded, the solemn expression returning to his face. "That it is, that it is. But what about those of us who are captives? Those who can't run?" He was speaking about himself, of course, though hopefully it wasn't obvious.

I stared at him for a second, trying to fingure out what he was talking about. "Um... what?"

Dusty couldn't help but grin slyly. Confusing her was more fun than it really should have been for him. "Oh, nothing."

"So, do you always run around like that?" he asked, his grin subsiding.

"Almost every day. It's kind of like..." I paused for a second, trying to find the right words. "A time to gather my thoughts," I said finally, although that didn't really sum it up well.

"Huh," he answered, nodding thoughtfully. "I guess that's as good an explanation as any."

I shrugged. "So, what did you mean when you said you couldn't run?" I asked, hoping he'd give me a straight answer this time.

He shrugged, trying to not seem overly concerned about himself. "I'm not free enough. On the inside."

He skeptically raised his eyebrows. "Perhaps, but perhaps not . . ."

He nodded slowly. "You're . . . right." Now Dusty was all ready to try, but suddenly, he felt rather silly. Would he look that way, too? Shy, he swung his head back and forth, trying to make up his mind.

"Just do it," I suggested. "It's really fun."

"Okay," he finally agreed. Then, after a short moment of thought, he added, "But don't watch while I start." Taking a deep breath as he looked away from her, and hoping she was listening, Dusty began running.

It was . . . freeing. To watch his hooves leave the ground behind . . . it felt like he was abandoning his worries as well. Everything vanished, all his sadnesses, and were replaced by a strange ecstasy. This was life.

I obediently shut my eyes until his hoofbeats had faded slightly, then opened them again to watch.

An expression of awe filled his face, when he suddenly realized it. He was really running, he was really freed - at least temporarily. And it was so wonderful.

After a few moments, Dusty breathlessly came to a stop nearby his starting point, his flanks heaving as he took in the air. He said nothing, but his eyes communicated all the excitement he'd felt while running. She was right.
