Dying Star

Bandage my hands and
hold them in yours until
they thaw and melt all
over your paper heart.

Carve me a way out of
this cardboard box before
I blow my head away with
the breath of a dying star.

Steer my fading eyes away
from memories and benches
that are cracked and peeling
but still red on the outside.

Tape my wings together
and show me how to fly
with my knees and eyelashes
and thoughts that hide.

Break my will to trace
you and give me a way
to sketch something new,
that doesn't make me cry.

Forgive me for mussing
your hair when I fell,
and for telling you that
I'd never let you in again.


Tell me that I'm perfect, and I won't believe you.
