Ever had one of those days? Those days where everything goes wrong, and then just gets worse? Today was one of those days.
Walking down the halls of school was a task in its own; but add the bustling group of jostling teens that ran through the hallways just added to the stress. Even so, I managed to walk through the never ending cliques and groups of classmates. All that was left was getting my belongings and getting out of this crap heap. Through all the rows, finding my locker was a synch. I turned the lock left and right, until the click of its release was heard. Opening the locker I grabbed multiple books and my backpack, until I heard a voice.
“Hello...Renae...”
The boy's voice shook gently. Looking up and too my right, I didn't see anyone, except the occasional teen walking by. Curiosity got the better of me and I peeked around the corner of my locker. Surprised, my eyes widened to find Jacob standing there, with his murky ocean eyes, gazing intently on me. His head bobbed a hello, making his bleached blonde hair sway. Without warning, my face felt hot, and I could hear my heart beating in my own ears. Trying to hide my blush I turned away, and back to my items.
“Please answer me...” Jacob whined. As much of a whine it was, it still held the physique and tone for a sixteen year-old.
I bellowed a huff and turned to face him, still holding my backpack limply in my hand. I knew what he wanted to say. I could tell just by looking into his deep, gaping eyes. We were best friends, nothing else... That is at least what I thought; what I had come to believe. Watching him calm and smile back at me, with the most tender look on his face. The split second our eyes met, I could feel my blood pumping with anxiety.
“Yes...?” I answered. My voice was very to-the-point, but I managed to keep an innocent act up. My clouded-sky eyes fluttered up at his murky ones. I placed the last book in my book-bag before swinging it onto my shoulder. I clutched onto the strap tighter than I probably would have, if I wasn't freaking out about Jacob, and what his next words were going to be.
“I need to talk-” he began, before I cut him off.
“I am so sorry, but I have to go, I'll talk to you later, okay?” I patted his arm and turned on my heel. In moments, I was waving while turned away from him, heading for the door. The only noise at this point, was the softest click of my sneakers, smacking against the floor. I stopped in front of the exit door. My hands clutched lightly on the handle, ready to open the door, but my hands wouldn't move. Neither would my feet. I felt horrible for deserting Jacob like that. I angled my head back behind me, strangely hoping to see him there. Next to me. I shook my head, erasing the thought. We were best friends. Period. My hand slammed down the knob, and threw it forward in frustration. The door clouted the wall with outstanding force, and I shrunk back from the noise that echoed back at me. I moved forward, trying to escape the surrounding feeling of school and regret. Step by step, I receded from the schools view. The streets winded and turned, some circled back around, and others led far from the town. The closest route from my house meant that I had to cut through the forest. My strap slipped periodically down while I walked across the streets and sidewalks; until I plopped it back onto my shoulder.
In front of me, the fringe of the forest rustled. The brush billowed in a sudden breeze, making it look creepy. Even eerie. The image in my mind formed a dust filled, mist engulfed, nightmare of a forest. The forest that reflected off my startled eyes, though, wasn't so horrifying. If anything, it was pleasant. Petite. The foliage hung gingerly off the trees and stems, and the grass was laced with dew. For the most part, I believed it was my nerves getting the better of me. I had been in these woods plenty of times, but for some reason, something felt...off. I knew you were supposed to listen to your instincts, but the only way home was straight through that path.
I moved on, trying to get the image out from my head. With each and every step, my stomach began to tighten more and more. A queasy sensation arose, and my stride became wider. My feet seemed to think on their own, and kept moving without me even noticing. After so long, my strut slowed, and I found myself stopping in a clearing patch. My book-bag seemed to gain weight, and the vision of thee forest returned. Something was going to happen. No. Scratch that. Someone was here, and it was happening now.
When you walk in the dark, everything feels shadowed; your thoughts, your surroundings. But who knew that the night could also turn a soul dark.
That clearing. That open space. It didn't feel... open. I felt trapped, like someone was trying to close in on me. My breathing became faster, heavier. The book bag that was in my hands dropped to my side with nothing but a thump onto the ground. Something just wasn't right. I looked up to see the sun setting farther and farther, leaving my view. In it's place were vibrantly rich clouds up above. Ever so slowly were the clouds slipping away, trying to pull up the moon.
My eyes were growing wide with terror. I brought my gaze back down to the forest around me. Every little movement caught my eye; the rustling leaves of a bush over here, the swaying foliage of a tree. I just couldn't get my legs to move. My eyes darted left and right until finally a glimmer shined off of a tree. In the corner of my eye a silhouette stood... staring. I turned my head toward the figure for a better look. He was shaded, engulfed by the darkness surrounding him. I could barely make out his black hair and dark eyes. He wore a white T-shirt and jeans. His stature itself wasn't horrific, it was the gleam in his eye that unnerved me.
The man stepped out of the shadows calmly, with purpose. His thumbs were stuck in his pockets, and his hair covered his face. All I could see was his smile now, mischievous but something else. Kind? It looked warm. Something I didn't expect to see in the smiling face of a stranger, in the middle of the forest... was a kind smile.
“Are you stuck? Lost?” his voice was smooth, and it held a mysterious tone to it.
“Um, no. I-I'm fine, you can,um go away now!” I panicked. My feet finally began to move, and the first thing they did was back away from the creep. The wind was toying with my hair, pushing strands to fall in my face, blocking part of my view over and over again.
“Are you sure? I'll be happy to help.”
By now the boy was close enough for me to see the details in his face. He looked my age, with golden brown eyes. Continuing to inch closer to me, I became frantic and tripped over a random root poking its way above ground.. It happened so suddenly that all I realized was the world moving by, and a sudden impact on to the ground meeting my head.
“Ow... please just go away!” I begged, rubbing the back of my head now. Never had I heard my voice so pleading. My eyes shut fast and I dipped my head, just hoping he would leave. When I opened my eyes someone unexpected appeared. His bleached hair swayed in the wind, and he stood between me and the stranger. Slowly, I rose to my feet and gaped at him. Jacob. I moved to face him, but he swiftly placed his arm in my path.
“Stay behind me!” he snapped. His voice was cold, and I could only imagine the look in his eyes toward the boy. My eyes danced from Jacob to the boy, then to Jacob again. He looked determined, but what about made me confused.
“Jacob, what are you doing here? Did you follow me? What's going on? Who is he?” I stammered. I had so many questions, even more that I didn't even ask, and after this whole mess was over, I knew I was going to interrogate him. When I looked back at him though, the only answer I got in return was a look that made me shut my mouth. He was mad, and that was an understatement.
“Why are you here?” Jacob asked, nodding his head to the stranger, cocking his eye brow questioningly.
“What are you talking about? I was trying to help her of course.” he answered, pointing to me. “Why are you here? Did you know I was back in town?” he asked, smirking. He began to circle around Jacob, until he was facing me, his eyes the shade of chocolate. Something behind his eyes flickered, but I couldn't tell what it was.
“Yeah, I knew you were back around so I 'took a stroll'. What do you want Alex?” Jacob asked. Now his voice was smooth, along with Alex's. I had become the third wheel, and I had no idea what was going on. What I pieced together was that they knew each other, and somehow I fit into all of it. I didn't know whether to feel proud, or terrified. Alex's grin widened and he stepped closer, until he was only a foot away from me.
“So, what's your name?” he asked, bending closer to me. I felt my cheeks get hot again, and knew I was blushing as red as a firetruck. My feet tried to step back and away, but I didn't make it very far before running into Jacob. I yelped and bounced back forward. Alex's expression twisted into a cheshire smile, completed with a snicker.
“Leave her alone.. We'll talk later...” Jacob interrupted. Immediately he grabbed my wrist and pulled me forward. The tug was gentle, but held enough force to pull me off my feet. Even as I continued to follow I just stared at Alex; his black hair swaying, brown eyes dancing. My eyes blinked multiple times, just to make sure he was real. On the last blink, though, he disappeared. Vanished. There was no trace of him left there. I would have doubted whether he was even real, if it wasn't for the grip on my wrist and the infuriated aura of Jacob walking by my side. My big blue eyes became round like saucers, and I was unable to take my eyes off of spot he once stood.
After all of the obnoxious voices and arguing from before, the still silence of rustling leaves felt eerie. Out of place. Managing to scrape my eyes from the empty space I looked back to Jacob, who was still pulling me away toward my house. I batted my eyes up at him, blinking away fog misting up my vision. His eyes looked far off, vacant, like he was thinking about something. My eyes wandered down to my hand, glancing at his hand gripping my wrist.
“Look, I am sorry about all of that. Is it possible for you to pretend that didn't happen?” he asked, throwing in a saddened smile while still gazing forward.
“Um, sorry, but I doubt that.” I answered honestly with a nervous chuckle.
“Thought so... I can explain later, but for now, go home, okay? And don't go back into the forest” His eyes met with mine for a split-second before he pulled them away.
What? How could he ask something as childish as that. Out of everyone I knew, he knew I loved the forest. He knew how much it mattered to me. It was my escape, and it called out to me. I narrowed my eyes, letting them burn with a new found rage, and I yanked my wrist away from his hand. His eye brow arched, contemplating over my decision.
“I'll go in there when I want! I'm not speaking to you until you tell me what's up or give me a pretty good reason not to go in there, got it?” I had bent over, getting up in his face, just to make sure he knew I was serious. I was only inches away from him, glaring him down. Jacob began leaning away until he finally stepped back.
“I don't get why you're so mad-” he began waving his hands around apologetically.
“Because I am!” I yelled back. With that, I stormed off and toward my house, letting him be on the outskirts of the forest.
Reaching my door I slammed the key in its hole, turned it to the right, and flung the door open. Why did he have to be so difficult? But there was another thing that was bothering me, and it was this. Why was I so mad?
