Re: (Computers) Apple Vs. Windows
Beware humongous ramble that explains why I like Windows computers better.
- The Ramble:
- I'm with what Shadow said on the first post, it's not fair to judge on your preference based off of whether or not you could figure out how to use it. Furthermore this debate has more than one topic to it than just how easy it is to use and what it looks like. So I guess I'll give my word on each topic.
I grew up on Windows, so in the end I will end up choosing Windows, but I will have my reasons, even if I briefly use older models as props for my reasoning.
Let's start with design. I don't see why the hey that matters, but I guess I might as well approach it. You may picture a computer as being "big and clunky and square", but when was the last time you saw a spherical computer? A cylindrical one? A dodecahedral one? Last but not least... One that looks like an apple?
My point is, no matter what computer you approach, it's going to be square. I used to have a boxy Windows. Now I have a Dell laptop with a one inch thick screen, even if the screen is small, and that laptop has a ViewSonic monitor connected to it, therefore giving me two screens. I've seen Mac laptops that are pretty pink and all that jazz. (That's another thing—it's a computer, not a Hollister shirt, so why care about color?) But I've seen Macintosh computers that are even boxier than the Windows I once had, and they were an ugly beige color versus the charcoal grey of the Windows.
So in the end, I say nobody wins for design.
Moving on to performance. No, Macs do not automatically win because they lack the Blue Screen of Death, I'll be approaching that later.
Once upon a time I got the opportunity to ditch my school every Thursday to go to this other one where we learned about a bunch of topics we'd use even less likely in our future lives than what we do at regular school. When I went there for my first year, third grade (in this case second semester, making it 2006), I had to take my last resort and use that ugly beige Macintosh I talked about earlier. Normally the charcoal grey ones I used there would take five minutes to take to the log on screen, and another three to actually get in, leaving me with less time than I could have had to work on my project (this school was all about them). This time I got to the Macintosh, and just when I had been successfully logged in, guess what? I didn't get a chance to do any work, as it was time to clean up before lunch. I had the same amount of time as I usually did with my Windows computers, and that was what I got, proving much weaker performance compared to an already brain dead computer.
As for the blue screen of death, really you should only get it if you're abusing the CPU usage, or at least in my mind. For example, you shouldn't have five different Firefox windows open with two tabs each, a Word document and Rhapsody/iTunes running all at the same time. I had almost that exact scenario going on (really it was one window with ten complicated tabs), and that was the only time I'd ever received the blue screen of death. Besides, I get annoyed at my iPod Touch for its many flaws and errors much more than I do my Windows. >.>
So Microsoft wins the performance portion.
I'm also giving a mini little opinion on the dictionaries each company provides. Microsoft provides both grammar and spelling dictionaries, so I like that. Generally the spelling dictionary is correct, but the grammar one is terrible—in fact, eighty percent of the time that grammar checker will make an error. For example, one time it wanted me to change "You *blahblahblah*" to "You is", and after I did that absentmindedly it gave me the green squiggle again and told me to change it to "You are". So I did that, and it gives me the squiggle again and tells me to change it back to "You is", and then back to "You". I pretty much strangled Microsoft Word.
Apple doesn't give you a grammar dictionary, but I don't really care. It's better not to know than to practice incorrectly, especially at youth. I forgot what actually happened, but I remember Leah telling me that her iTouch activating its automatic dictionary and spelling some word wrong. I dunno, ask her.
Guess what? Nobody wins the correctness potion either.
Yup, in the end Microsoft won, though I give kudos to Apple for their iPods, as I'm a fan of those.
Also, check out the YouTube channel "jacksfilms" and check out his iPad parody, along with a few others that involve Apple. ^^ The iPad one is probably the best though.

Re: (Computers) Apple Vs. Windows
About this portion of your argument, Cyn:
I don't see how that's abusing your computer. At the moment on my Macbook I have 15 Safari windows open, with probably a total of maybe 60 or 70 tabs, and the speed is exactly the same as it is with one window. I also have Grab, Appleworks, iTunes, Photoshop, Stickies, OmmWriter, Word, and Software Update running. No difference in speed, and no crashing. The only thing I have to complain about is that sometimes I'll accidentally hit Command-P instead of Command-[ (which works as the back button) and then the computer will freak out for five minutes or so. But other than that...

Re: (Computers) Apple Vs. Windows
Google is actually making an operating system. And it'll pwn both Windows and Mac.
Cyn, I don't agree with you, either. You should be able to do that. I do it all the time. It doesn't really make the computer run much slower, and the whole point of shelling out all the money for these things is to have good performance. If you can't have four programs up at the same time, then your computer is, well, just sucky.

I used a mac once (like 5 minutes xD) & it wasn't hard to use. Then again, finding the internet icon, going on YouTube, shouldn't be complicated xD
I've used Windows all my life.

Ah, so you didn't see my earlier post, then. No, Macs do not automatically win because they lack the Blue Screen of Death
Macs don't get blue screens of death, but they do get gray screens of death. >D At least, mine does once in a while. When I use Command-Q to quit my Bugdom game, when it restarts (but only in instances where it freezes and won't do anything else, or when it already has a gray screen), and on occasion when it wakes up after going to sleep.
So they do get them. But that's the only computer that's ever had it, and it's the oldest one too, so at least he has an excuse.
Ooooh . . . poor Steve Jobs.Google is actually making an operating system. And it'll pwn both Windows and Mac.
If you had to look for it in Applications, then the computer simply didn't have a dock enabled. There's a setting to give it one, which is basically just a line of applications along one edge of the screen.I used a mac once (like 5 minutes xD) & it wasn't hard to use. Then again, finding the internet icon, going on YouTube, shouldn't be complicated xD
If you did have that, though, I don't see how it's complicated. XD You just gotta know what you're looking for.
Re: (Computers) Apple Vs. Windows
Okay. I'm going to go a totally different direction and say this;
I've worked with three systems so far. Macintosh, Windows (ME and XP), and Linux.
They all have their pros and cons. Linux, as it's been said, is opensource. Windows is cheap. Mac is not a computer for people who need to do text-based stuff and need a good word processor.
And here's what I personally think.
I know this is an Apple versus Microsoft, but I'm going to drag Linux in for just a brief moment. The Linux software isn't extremely expensive but it also is horridly stiff and you cannot, I repeat, cannot customize it. Quite frankly, it was my least favourite out of the three to work with.
Now, Windows is a bit better. Low prices, smooth system, decent computers - oh, and did I mention that they have about 50,000 viruses that you can get? The Windows system is not secure. It is not built to be secure. It is built to be customizable, which can backfire because it's really easy to get into one and screw everything up.
However, I still like using the Windows XP system. It's a bit clunky sometimes, yes, and it does glitch up, but when I'm working on a piece of writing Microsoft Word is excellent.
Now, let's move on to contender number three: Mac.
I.
Love.
Mac.
But I'll put aside my slight bias for a few minutes.
The Mac system is entirely secure. You don't even really need to buy antivirus software if you get a Mac OS, which is totally awesome! So, instead of paying twenty plus bucks every time your Norton subscription runs out, you don't even have to worry about it. Basically, even though a Macbook laptop (brand new) is about 1,200 dollars, you've got a great computer right there. The Pro series is more - an Air tacks on an extra 300.
Oh, and did I mention that they're fantastic when it comes to graphic design?
In the past seven months of using a Macintosh system, I've been extremely impressed with not only the speed but the utter smoothness and quality of the computer I use on an daily basis and for several hours at a time. It doesn't glitch up, things load quickly, and although I only have 2GB running memory to work with (it's a netbook, m'kay?), it still does stuff really well.
In general, I'm really impressed with the technology of the Apple systems, from their iPods, iPhone and iPad to their iMac computer - the whole thing is contained in the monitor and you get this freaking AWESOME huge screen! How could you not love it?!
...Okay, I think that idea of keeping the bias out of the Mac segment kinda failed...
-cough-
Anyway.
If I had to pick a system to use for the rest of my life? Mac.
It's expensive, but it's so worth it.
EDIT: Shad, you mentioned the Macs having built-in webcams, right? Well, just about every laptop nowadays has a freaking built-in webcam. XD

Though I don't totally agree with your post, DragonStar, it was just so long and thought out that I'm giving you a rep point. xD
Re: (Computers) Apple Vs. Windows
Mine doesn't! But I guess you can't say it's one of today's laptops 'cause it's five years old. I'm not sure they even make these anymore. >.<DragonStar wrote:EDIT: Shad, you mentioned the Macs having built-in webcams, right? Well, just about every laptop nowadays has a freaking built-in webcam. XD
Well, if you bring up expensive... that means I probably couldn't even afford a Mac if I wanted one, then. We have money for food an' shelter an' clothes and a few goodies every once in a while. Laptop from five years ago? I was nine; it was on sale, a cheap model, or both; it was a birthday present-- but I still had to cough up half the cost. Heck, I probably wouldn't be broke today if I still had those $200...
But meh. Have what you will.

I mean ones from the past two or three years at the most, but mainly the ones from this year. (:

Aw, okay. xD I can see how I'd miss that, because I honestly haven't been hanging around with any new computers lately other than at the Mac store . . . oh well. *shrug*
I'm really glad to see you like Macs too, though. You're kinda hard to argue with, so if you'd been a PC person, I'd just sorta die right here. xD

Ha!
I'll tell you this; when you first met me, I was totally a PC person. Mainly because that was all I had used and grown up with, but ever since last Christmas when my dad got me a netbook with the Macintosh system... Instant love affair right there.

Re: (Computers) Apple Vs. Windows
Lol, I should use that to try influencing people. It'll go like this:
Me: You know Dianna, you should watch Death Note.
Dianna: For the tenth time, no!
Me: Well, fine, but you should at least get a Mac.
Dianna: But I don't like Macs!
Me: How do you know? You haven't even used them before! I guarantee you'll fall in love the moment you try it - that's what happened to my friend!
Or, well, something like that. Really, though, it does say something good about the system if you liked it so easily, right? x)

Re: (Computers) Apple Vs. Windows
I prefer Apple, personally. I've had so many problems with Windows, PCs, anything non-Mac/non-Apple. I've had about three computers crash, having gotten viruses from who-knows-what, and even when there are no viruses on the computer, they've over-heated, turned off by itself, and spazzed.
All the Apple applications are so much better than the Windows ones to me too. Pages has been much easier for me to use than Word or anything of the sort. I love the format of the desktop, Safari, and pretty much everything about Macs/Apple.
There we go.
Oh, and I was "raised with Windows," but after a week of using the Mac, I fell in love. It was confusing, I admit, in the beginning, but I bet if I was "raised with Apple," I would be confused as heck by Windows.
I've also been told Macs are practically immune to viruses by an Apple employee. So far, this Mac hasn't had one glitch. This is amazing seeing as how I manage to get viruses on every computer I touch and since my brother pretty much visits every virus-infested site known to man.
Oh, and I love iPods and all that jazz. This is pretty much Macs vs. PCs for me instead of Apple vs. Windows.

Re: (Computers) Apple Vs. Windows
Can I just say I find it hilarious how so many people have apparently had problems with Windows?
Sure, my old-as-dirt laptop (considering how fast technology marches) as I've brought up so many times has malfunctioned more times than I can count on one hand, but it's not the operating system doing it. I just put a ton of stress on this little guy.
Other than errors from the laptop itself, I have never had one problem with this thing or any other PC.
Maybe I just can't adapt, but I dunno. It killed me using that Mac last year.
*giggles* I'd throw in my dad's opinion on Macs, but seeing how overruled I am right now I do believe I would offend several people.
