I commend you for your awesomeness. Not only is L your favorite character, but Rem's your favorite shinigami?! That's the best choice you could have made, in my opinion. Ryuk is funny, but I wouldn't want him as my shinigami. xP I'd much rather have Rem because

Well, the thing with me is that he's just so . . . quiet. And emotionless. At least L has the capacity to be humorous, but Near just sits there and plays with his toys. He can be interesting, but he's far from amusing for me. So even if he hadn't done regrettable things in his lifetime (regrettable in my own opinion at least), I wouldn't like him much.

Now Mello on the other hand, dude, he has emotion. :3 He can be funny. And his hair is amazing near the end of the series. And he helped us to see that Light really can have real emotions, instead of faking everything. And he and Matt make fanfiction really interesting.
