"James, look at me. I don't care what the reason was. I don't care who they are- I don't care if they're my best friend! If they come anywhere near my little sister, yet alone turn her into a freaking WOLF, I'm going to kill them. Do I look like I'm kidding?" He asked, still holding Lily's hand.
A few seconds after his rant, his parents came through the door, looking worried. They had both been in here numerous times in their day, but now they were looking down at a very pale, very weak looking Lily.

What if I don't live up to them?

As the Potters walked in, James had his mouth open, trying to work up the guts to spill the beans, but he shut it quickly at his parents' entrance. He couldn't even bring himself to look at them, glad his own bite was covered by his long sleeve.

Yeah, I defeated the second-greatest wizard,
but what people don't realize is what was sacrificied.
I lost teachers, mentors, friends,
Order members, and Dumbledore.
And for a second, I nearly lost myself.
Yeah, I defeated the second-greatest wizard...

As I looked down at my daughter, I started having millions of flashbacks.
Hermione, lying in bed, her fist around the piece of paper that would save our lives.
Ron, after being poisoned, murmuring Hermione's name.
Bill, after the fight, covered in blood.
Standing here, traveling back in time.
Myself, so many times, unconscious from fighting or Quidditch.
Not many memories I wanted to see.
I blinked compulsively, trying to block the images from my mind, but when I looked at my daughter, all I could see was the young Hermione or Ron, or me as a child, or someone that had lied here and I had looked upon. I guess it was fate- I had gotten into so many accidents, shed so much blood, I guess I had passed it on to my children. Compulsively, I brushed my hand over my chest, where the burn mark from the locket was. Would my children suffer the same fate?

But it wasn't as easy as they say.

Ginny noticed Harry's movement and expression out of the corner of her eye. Guessing what he was thinking, she caught his hand and pulled it back down to his side, lacing her fingers through his and squeezing them gently.

"Will she be all right?" she asked the nurse worriedly.

I kept his fingers laced with Ginny's for comfort, but also put a hand on Albus' shoulder, because I knew that Albus was the more... emotional, I guess was the word, of my two boys. I rubbed his shoulder softly with my thumb, knowing how much it pained him to look down at his sister like this. I had done this to many times before, but each time it hit me with a surprising, new type of pain. This one- watching my daughter- was the worst. "She was smart- the moment or close to the moment she found out it was a werewolf bite and not just a regular wolf, she came straight here. Usually, without treatment, she would simply change into a wolf every full moon. However, with recent potions, we have found a way to stop that reaction. Instead of changing every full moon, she will change at every blue moon- every time there is a full moon twice in a month, and she will only change the second. Quote preferable." The nurse looked at Lily quietly, and I saw her eyes blink open weakly. "James..." She said in a daze, turning over and closing her eyes again. "James."

But it wasn't as easy as they say.

I swallowed hard. "Lily?" I asked quietly, averting my eyes. I couldn't look at her... My baby sister. I'd hurt my baby sister. Nearly killed her. Committed her to a horrible fate. It wasn't as bad as it could be, but it was my fault. Big brothers were supposed to protect their sisters. Not turn them into werewolves.

I wondered if she knew it was me. She had said something while I was attacking her, but my memory while I was a wolf was so fuzzy. I couldn't recall what she'd said.

Part of me wished she did know, somehow. I wanted her to blame me, yell at me, shun me. I deserved it. Maybe that would do something to quell the guilt churning in my stomach.

...Right?

Lily sat up groggily, her eyes half closed and a dazed look on her face. "Lils?" I asked quietly, still holding her hand. "Hi Al." She murmured inhorently, swaying as she stayed upright. "Lie down, Lils." Dad said with a straight face, taking his hand off my shoulder and switching it to James'. "How are you feeling?" I said, wondering if I actually wanted to know the answer. "Tired. My arm hurts." She said quietly, which was very unlike her. "James... did I see you last night?" She asked, rubbing her head.

"I... yeah," I said quietly, still not looking at any of my family. I wasn't sure if I wanted them to know. What if they all blamed me? I deserved it, yeah, but I couldn't lose my family...

"I don't remember seeing you... just your... presence I guess. I can't describe it..." She said with a cough, looking up at Mom. "Eh, I'm tired. My arm hurts." She rolled up her sleeve to reveal the bite. I shuddered- the bite was a strange color, almost like a sickly green, and it was oozing some type of pus like substance. "Lils." I whispered, feeling woozy as I sat down in one of the chairs near her bed. "Lillian..."

I froze as I saw the bite. I had done that, and I barely even remembered it. How could I forget doing something like that to my own sister?

My breath caught in my throat at the sight of the wound. I squeezed Harry's hand tightly and looked away, unable to look at it. My eyes landed on James, who seemed to be taking it badly, worse than I'd expected of him.

I felt like I was about to throw up. I had done that. At the sound of my name I jumped, tearing my gaze away to look up at my mother and father. The concern in their eyes... I couldn't take it.

"I... I have to go," I mumbled, jumping to my feet and sprinting out the door.

I ran, and I ran, and I ran, taking random turns, hurtling up and down staircases, glad no one was awake. I ran, trying to escape this nightmare. I ran until I couldn't run anymore and my legs crumpled beneath me, dropping to all fours, chest heaving as I gulped for breath.

Why me? Why me, why not someone else? Why did Lily have to be out there that night?

I followed the ghost to where James' supposedly was, leaning against the wall. "James? Lily wants you." I whispered quietly. "Can you come and see her? All she's saying is your name, and if I don't bring you back soon, she's going to try and find you."

"Fine. I'll leave, James. But you're breaking your baby sister's heart, you know. And she's going to try and find you and hurt herself more." And then I ran, tears filling my eyes as well. I honestly had thought that James would have done anything for Lily. Yeah, sometimes he was sarcastic and mean and rude, but he loved Lily, didn't he? He did love Lily, right? Right?
I wasn't so sure anymore.
When I got back to the hospital wing, I went back to Lils and took her hand again. "Lily? James... can't come right now, okay?" As suspected, Lily sat up groggily. "Where is he? I want to see him." She was stumbling around the bed as I grabbed her arm. "No, Lils, you should rest."
"I'm going to find him, Albus." And then she stumbled out the doorway with alarming speed.

James turned away, not watching as his brother ran back to the hospital wing. "Don't find me," he whispered, speaking to Lily though she wasn't there. He couldn't bear to look at her or barely think about her. He wasn't even sure if he'd ever be able to face her again.

it's a lot to live up to.
You've got to know what to do,
~~or you ruin him as well as yourself.~~

"James?" I called weakly, wandering and stumbling through Hogwarts. Luke, from the boat, looked at me quietly with an air of concern, but I just gave him a smile and kept walking. "James..." I whispered silently, tears rolling down my cheeks. Where was he? when I needed him most, my biggest brother wasn't there.

Eventually, after searching for over an hour and finding a ghost that apparently knew where he had gotten off to, I found my brother. "James." I whispered quietly as I walked into his presence. "Where were you?"

It's hard trying to protect everything your family lives for.

"James? Are you okay?" I asked quietly, sitting down next to him and ignoring his commands. "You've been off ever since I got bitten. It's not that big of a deal, really. It's only every blue moon, so it'll probably only be, like, once or twice a year. You don't have to run off like this. I missed you." My head was leaning against his shoulder in the way I used to always do when we were little and I got hurt or was crying. James usually wasn't like this- he was sarcastic and blunt, but he loved his family more than anything and cared about us, didn't like to see us hurt. "Is that why you're doing this? Because you don't like to see me hurt? I'm fine, James, I promise you that. I don't want you to run off." I whispered quietly, pulling my legs up to my chest and wrapping my hurt arm around them. "Ouch." I muttered to myself, hoping he didn't hear it. "I'm fine. Really."

It's hard trying to protect everything your family lives for.
