"Hey, Ave, how are you?"

Terrified. Lonely. Regretful. Angry.

I thought that we could put this behind us, that we could forget about everything, that the addiction had stopped. And, you know, it had - for a while.

Having your coach take you home from practice because your mom is too drunk to come pick you up is just plain embarassing. What upsets me is that she lies about it afterwards. She claims she hasn't been drinking, but it's just so obvious. And then she tells me she loves me, that she's so sorry.

I know the routine and I know it's a lie. And then she asks me what she can do to make it up to me, and I want to tell her that if she stopped drinking, I'd be happy. I've been through it too many times to know that it won't work. If I tell that to her and she agrees to stop, I'll come home from school the next day to find that she's been drinking.

So when she asks what she can do to make it up for me, I'll just ask if she can make me some empanadas for dinner, since she never made dinner and my dad is out of town. Of course, she's far too tired to do that, so I end up burning a few pullovers and eggs until finally I give up and end up just having some toast.

And, yeah, tell me I'm overreacting and that I'm stupid, and I know it's true. It could be a lot worse, but what gets me is that we all thought it was over. We all thought she had quit, we all thought she was better now. All I can hope for right now is that it won't become an addiction again. :/

I guess the best thing to do is just pretend that I'm going to be strong, and I hope that maybe soon, I will be. But for now, I'll just fake a smile and say -

"I'm great, how about you?"

Aww, Ave. *huggle* I'm so sorry. You're not overreacting in the slightest - you have every reason to be upset over this. I'll keep your mom in my prayers and hope she manages to stop the drinking.

You can pray, and hope for everything to eventually get better.

My dad used to smoke all the time, he told me. But before I was born, when my dad discovered that my mom was pregnant, he forced himself to stop.

So, you can just hope that your mom will eventually stop. :/
