Hmm, yeah, I do see where you're coming from then. XD I hate it when people on Facebook use bad grammar . . . it's like, ten times worse there, and what can you really do about it? I wonder if there's a group there to protest against bad grammar . . .
But that quote scares me, because Muffin is an (endangered) nickname of mine. o_O
Re: Stricter Rules
Haha, yeah, the lazy ones and the ones that won't take the time to help us learn. ^^Mo wrote:Now that you mention it, I don't think deleting posts because of grammar would be a good idea either, really... That's only something lazy WI mods would do. ^^
Yeah, I guess that could happen, but that could be against the rules as well. There's no excuse for it, really. If they need to, they can make it a full sentence. Like, instead of "sure," they could say, "sure Afi, I'll make sure to get you the pink earmuffs you wanted."
I agree with you, Cyn. :3 I hardly ever use ampersands at all, though. X3 Unless I'm talking about a couple... There's the odd time I'll say Light & L instead of LightxL.
Oh, okay, if the whole lol thing would be against the rules too, then I'm up for it.
Right, and same here, I hardly use ampersands either. I'll use it for like Penn & Teller or Ben & Jerry's or Tom & Jerry, but otherwise I leave them be. (That makes me wonder, was there an ampersand section in that Eats, Shoots & Leaves book? I might need to reread and check... (Oh look, I just used an ampersand. What a coincidence. xP)
I'm not going to quote all zee messeeegeeees daaaat looook lyyyyyk deeeeez because they're horrific to me. >.< But I'll say that I really hate all those. I'm just glad I didn't see it a whole lot of that with my "friends" while I was on Facebook.
Yes, there are multiple Facebook groups against bad grammar, all/many of which believing Lynne Truss should be a saint (seriously, in the world of literature she needs to be one). :3Muffin wrote:Hmm, yeah, I do see where you're coming from then. It's fun referring to you as Muffin. xD The nickname must LIVE!

You know, like, when I get around to it.
The nickname is very grateful to you for your efforts to help reinstate it in the world! :')

I will also, from now on, call you Muffin! :3

Re: Stricter Rules
Thank you so much, Twarry! :3 That's too kind of you.
You know, maybe something that would also help, beyond a rule reinforcement, would be an actual grammar guide of some sort? XD I mean, I know that'd be a pretty huge job to make, but it'd be useful.

Re: Stricter Rules
@Muffin:
Uh huh. xD I'll do that when I re-register.
I'm glad it takes pleasure in our (being Twarry and me) efforts. :3
*raises hand* I would help too. ^^ Especially in anything related to punctuation. I can do grammar too, but I think punctuation, next to spelling, is my strongest point in writing.

Re: Stricter Rules
Spelling is my strongest point, no doubt. And maybe punctuation. xP
I know grammar pretty well, but not completely.

Re: Stricter Rules
I'll help with the guide, spelling is my highest point/spot, I'm really good at it. But I'll help with anything.

Re: Stricter Rules
I'd offer to help with the guide, but I kind of suck at English. X3 Like, I'm no master at French either, but since I take the majority of my courses in that language, you guys have more practice in English writing than I do.

Re: Stricter Rules
I do more French than English too, Mo. Don't worry.
Well, mostly in school. xP But whatever.

Re: Stricter Rules
Yay! The idea has support! XD How should this be gone about, then? Do we want one person to post it, or multiple people, each with their own post on a different aspect of grammar? And we'll allow anyone to offer suggestions, regardless of who's actually managing the thread, right?
Re: Stricter Rules
I say multiple people posting. If others want to offer suggestions, I think it should be on a separate thread, but that's just me.

Re: Stricter Rules
Okay. XD And um, do you guys think you'll be able to come to an agreement on who posts what, then? Maybe you just sorta share the input on your best topics, even if only one person can actually post them? (Or do you see some other solution that my disease-dampened mind cannot? XD)
Re: Stricter Rules
Maybe say Bob works with Sally on ________. Bob posts half of the ideas, and Sally the other half. Or if it's three people, one third of the ideas. Or if 4 people, 1/4. Etcetera, etcetera.
:3

Re: Stricter Rules
If you guys wanna do it that way, that'll work! ^^ (And I realize I'm starting to look at this now as 'not my project.' Umm. If you guys feel I should be contributing, I will. XD But if you want it to be your own, that's fine too. I'm just gonna sit here and be okay with whatever.)
Re: Stricter Rules
What Twarry said. I'll go ahead and rank what I do best to worst in literary conventions.
1. Punctuation—commas, apostrophes, (semi-)colons, etc.
2. Spelling
3. Miscellaneous—how to type numbers and when... that kind of thing.
4. Grammar—when to use what (I, me, whom, etc.)
5. Grammar—phrases and clauses.
And Muffin, if you want to contribute, I'm cool with that. ^^

Re: Stricter Rules
With those 5 categories, I think I rank this:
1. Spelling
2. Punctuation
3/4.(it's a tie) Grammar(when to use...)/Misc.
5. Grammar(phrases and clauses)
I say the same as Cyn, Muffin. ;3

Re: Stricter Rules
Aww, I missed all the fun discussing. Darn sleeping!
I rank things: grammar (when to use), spelling, punctuation, grammar (phrases and clauses), misc.
A guide sounds like a great idea. I'd love to help but I already have way too much stuff to do. xD

Re: Stricter Rules
Well, a lot of the time during, say, PM's I use obsessive capitals and such, but that's only when I'm really excited or I know you really well [like me and Wormy, for instance. ]. I do use stuff like O.o and IDK, and that's technically chatspeak, I guess, but when people do something like this:
lyk ya id <3 2 do tht itd be fun luv yaz
That's okay when you're texting, but on a writer's site for teenagers it's not. Everyone makes typos, and there are some words that I just can't spell right, like unconcious [see, I failed again. xD], and that we can overlook. But stuff like what I wrote before should be in the rules.
Basically, I agree. (:

Re: Stricter Rules
I'mm going with...
1. Spelling
2. Punctuation
3. Grammar
4. Grammar [phrases, ect.]
5. Misc.
I agree Amanda, it's only acceptable with texting. Except for when in a rush, I guess. Since if I have to get off really quickly, I'll just quickly say:
Dinner. Gtg, see you l8er.
I'll pretty rarely use l8er, but still. I think if you have time you should use your best spelling, but if you're in a hurry, you can use 'gtg' every once in a while.

Re: Stricter Rules
I think that you all raise good points. If the sentences are formed coherently and every second word isn't an acronym, it's just fine. For example, if I were to have 'lol' or 'xD' at the end of this sentence, I wouldn't be degrading my reputation as a person with proper grammar and spelling... just because that's how it works. xD
Re: Stricter Rules
Using smileys and stuff doesn't count as bad grammar, at least not in my opinion, because online there's no facial expression or tone of voice and it's hard to tell what the person means. Something meant to be a joke or friendly teasing could be taken as an insult.
