Chapter VIII:
Deryck and Scarlette sat there on the beach, in the dark, as merpeople. They watched as the King came closer to them. Deryck heard Scarlette's breathe become gasps. He reached his hand out and put it on hers to calm her.

"Interesting." The King said. "Well, come down to the castle please. I would like to speak with you both." He turned and walked into the forest.

"How is he going to meet us down there to talk, if he just turned and went into the woods?" Deryck asked Scarlette.

"You know, after all of these years, I've learned not to ask questions about what my father was doing..." She replied. "Come on. You should get used to the water before we go see him." She pulled his hand and the two merpeople fell into deeper water.

Deryck couldn't believe how amazing his eyes were underwater. He could see everything. Everything. Every scale on every fish that he and Scarlette passed.

Scarlette let go of Derycks hand and swam a bit forward. "You do realize that you're breathing underwater, right?" She asked.

Deryck smiled. He hadn't noticed. He swam toward her and picked her up in his arms, swirling around with her. He kissed her. It was remarkable. He felt like his emotions were twice as strong. He knew it, he loved Scarlette.

"I love you." The mermaid said. Her eyes were dark purple, and shone with passion and intensity as she said it. She meant it.

"I love you too." Deryck answered. "Let's go." He kissed her one more time, but this wasn't like the others. He knew now, she was the one he was meant to be with. Merpeople or not, they were meant to be together. Forever.

They swam forward to the castle. Deryck was unsure of what to expect, but what he did see, it certainly wasn't what he expected.

"Deryck, welcome to Dooweldnac." Scarlette said with a smile, as she pulled him closer to the cleaming city.
