I snorted, rolling my dark eyes. "You want to be normal, Bree?" I asked in disbelief, "sure, you're a little quirky at the best of times, and you come from a hick town... But you're probably as normal as they come, honestly. You don't have anything to worry about; believe me."

My gaze snapped away from her in annoyance. It was if she tried to create drama for herself when her life was already evidently perfect. It almost made me envious, really... Such a clean-cut girl with not a worry in the world. What could possibly be abnormal about Bree? She was definitely unique, but not in a particularly odd way. Although, she did have her moments.

My heart did a nervous flip as Rocus single-handedly smashed my tranquility to smithereens. I collected my thoughts at warp speed and puffed out a rather prolonged exhalation of air. When I tried to suck my breath back in, it was like my throat was constricting, making it difficult to breathe. “You know, my exasperation with your disinterest in what may be lurking in my past is as perpetual as your exasperation at my preoccupation trying to hide that past—And you don’t know what I’m trying to hide. You have no right to look so annoyed. Because you know what? Maybe, just maybe, my secrets might endanger you. But what do I care? I smiled at his compliment and drove along, deciding where we would go. I honestly hadn't planned this beforehand so I followed my instincts and turned along random roads. I tried not to act as if I were making it up as we went along, but I couldn't help it. Finally we were driving along an old road beside a lake. I turned my head to admire the fascinatingly large blue waters. "Look how beautiful that lake is." I whispered.

After a moment I realized I was still driving, and turned my head back to the road. "Oh no." I said, a string of curse words following right along after that statement. I paid so much attention to the lake, I hadn't noticed the traffic that had built up in front of me. I slammed on my brakes but still hit the car in front of me.

I turned the wheel but spun out of control into the lake. A tear rolled down my cheek when I realized what had happened, and the car gradually filled with water as we sunk to the bottom.

Emily sat down with him at a table and smiled as he brought up his hopeful tone for her voice. It was her time to speak up now. She kind of wondered if Carson had seen this coming at all, but that didn't really matter, so she kept her mind focused on whatever did. "You know, I've been thinking ... " That would be important, wouldn't it? she asked herself sarcastically before continuing. "The whole reason I'd made a habit out of keeping quiet was due to things that aren't present at the mansion—yet, anyway—so why bother?" Emily added a shrug, as if it would add emphasis to what she'd said. Now there were only two things left: a response, and hopes that Carson wouldn't ask just what those things were. Really, she didn't want to be reminded of ... Those things. She didn't even want to use any other term but 'those things' at this point, so that was a definite sign she didn't want to talk. If only he knew that.

I couldn't hold back the grin as she spoke. I wondered what exactly kept her from speking, but I could tell it bothered her so I left that small fact alone. "I guess the fact that you never spoke, made your voice ... special" I said quietly, looking away with the embarrassment that I had actually said that.

Emily noticed just how much jubilance he'd shown her. Maybe he was just in it for the voice. She didn't mind that at all. In fact, she almost enjoyed the fact. Then when he complimented her voice to one degree or another, Emily couldn't help but return a smile. "I wouldn't call my voice anything to brag about," she replied. And it was true: Emily didn't really see what was all that special. She'd thought it once and she'd think it again: it wasn't cold, or snappy, or coarse, or raspy, or any of that, so didn't it just make it normal? Or maybe it was just a relief for some people who only heard that kind of stuff? Emily really hoped that wasn't his case, meaning he would have had a tough upbringing himself.

"Oh, I'm sooo scared of big bad Bree," I dragged out my words, eyes widened as if I was frightened. After only seconds, I broke the charade with a snicker. "You know, maybe I'd believe you about your 'great peril' if you weren't on some sort of hallucinogenic making you see fairy boys everywhere."

With a sharp roll of my liquid cocoa eyes, I swerved my gaze to avoid eye contact. I knew quite well that that was a lie; I had seen the scars for myself. But it couldn't have been fallen angels like she said... Things like that simply didn't exist. It was probably a gang of some sort. They must have gave her a drug. It would explain the weird spasms of pain that she got all of the time. And now it's just driven her insane enough into thinking she's a part of some elite, secret society when in reality, she was just gang-banged and marked. Branded like a cow, really. It was disgusting that human beings would do that to one of their own kind, but that had to be the only reasoning behind it. These guys weren't ever angels of any sort; just some sick freaks with nothing better to do with their pathetic lives.

The sun had sunk yonder behind the mountain tops, which were still purple with the reflection from the sky, but the depths of the valley were becoming gray, and suddenly I felt frightened. My low spirits obviously weren’t helping. The only relief that came out of Rocus’ possible notion is that he didn’t believe me one bit. He was a man of logic. “God, when will we get there? By the time we do, my legs will be as stiff as iron bars...” I droned dryly, changing the subject. I was still uncomfortable, even if my Fallen Angel ‘nonsense’ was a safe topic... Heh, it was more like a thesis, but anyway... That was all because he just didn’t presume true that fact that bodies that were not recovered and had not been deposited in the consecrated earth of a churchyard can still be in the external world. I couldn’t keep my most top-secret thoughts away as they bombarded into my head. My... ‘Religion’. My religion was reborn...long enough ago, but who knows how many eons before it may have been reborn even before the latest time. My ‘religion’ is gone astray as soon the stars have mercifully burned away the chilling, heinous darkness... When I brought this race back to life, the zephyr swirled, the church crumbled into oblivion, and the skies subjected me to an eternal penalty...

"If only... Then maybe we'd have to keep you locked up in the hospital until your legs would recover; it'd give me a break from your insanity," I grumbled quietly before raising my voice, "But we're here now, so no matter. Let's get back before Irène kills us."

I stopped the vehicle abruptly, causing the 8000 pounds of cold metal and steel to jerk backwards in a harsh halt. I shut off the engine with a twist of the keys, tossing them over to Bree. I only fumbled with the seatbelt for a few second before I had already jumped out of the truck and made my way back up to the mansion door, fighting through the darkness around me. It felt almost heavy, like the humid air of a rain forest. I briefly glanced over my shoulder to see if Bree was anywhere behind me.

I narrowed a look at the keys flung onto my lap with a sigh. When I was out of my truck, I closed the door tentatively, and turned my heels to walk towards the manor. I always had this kind of tunnel vision—That I couldn’t break the rules, no matter what. Now, I was full of ick and shame... My rage seemed to reignite just then, as the guilt converted into ruthlessness. I twisted the keys in my fingers—They sprung in a circular motion, sinuous like the strikes of a snake. I felt as if a snake should attack me, that instant. But, my keys weren’t capable of death... Unfortunately. I’ll have to wait until I’d find ramen for that. My resolve wavered for a second; Rocus was way more likely to kill me than noodles; seriously, if I had to be rational... Ugh. I struggled to escape that terrible thought—But, it was stuck there, in my head, seemingly winding threads through my brain like a weed—poisonous and unkillable. I now struggled to escape the venomous weed in my mind, instead.

Emily glanced up from something she'd suddenly found really intriguing on the table seconds earlier, hearing Carson's comment. "I know that," she replied simply. He wasn't going back to the not being smart thing, was he? No, of course he wouldn't, there just wouldn't be a reason for it. Some part of Emily wasn't completely sure about that, but she didn't want to doubt him in any way, not at this point. Whatever the situation was, it didn't make any appearance on her facial expression, that she made sure of. She just wished she could think of something to say in return. Having been silent for all these years, Emily hadn't thought of any ways to respond or strike conversation, as she had never had any motive to do such a thing, which still thought wasn't a pleasant idea. But Emily had told herself she would start speaking up, so she would do just that. As soon as she figured out how, that was.
