- Rose sat on her small stool at the small desk she worked at. She worked on the papers her employer, Mr. Talbot, had given her. The faintly blinking candle light was all she had to see in the pitch black of night. At home, her children would be waiting with their father, probably playing some sort of game.
Rose smiled at the thought of her family. Her daughter, Jennifer, with her flowing blonde hair. Her son, Justin, with his short sandy hair. And her husband, Jon, who was indescribable. Cropped brown hair, swimming green eyes. Rose often wondered why he had chosen her over all the other beautiful women.
While in deep thought, the sleeve of her dress lazily swept over the wick of the candle. It inflamed, and Rose screamed, dropping her quill. The flames ate up her sleeve and she shook it to no luck. Rose hastily ripped the part of her sleeve that was inflamed, and dropped it on the floor. She stepped on it repeatedly, dousing the flame.
Eventually the fire went out, but Rose had already reduced to tears. She had promised young Jenny this dress for when she grew up, and Jon had worked hard to earn the money for it. Justin had also admired his mother in it, too. Rose sobbed for herself, too. The floor was a little burnt, and Mr. Talbot would probably fire her. Rose cried for hours, but still continued with her work. Once and a while what she had wrote would blur, but that was from tears in her eyes.
When she was done, she stacked the papers neatly in a pile. Mr. Talbot entered the room, in a suit as always.
"What is this!?" He roared, looking at the burn mark. Rose explained quickly, but did not mention the part about her dress for some reason.
"You are fired!" Mr. Talbot said, pointing to the door. "Get out!"
Rose winced. She had known it was coming, but it still hurt. She trudged back home, and held back her tears. Rose reached out a hand and opened the door to her house, and Jon was right there in front of her. She smiled and kissed his cheek, walking in.
"I have something to tell you." She said as her children entered the room.
"Mommy!" They chorused, running to hug their mother. Rose held them tight before releasing the young kids.
"Before you tell us your news, I have to tell you something that the children already know." Jon said, all of a sudden looking glum. Rose stroked his cheek to comfort him as Jenny and Justin nodded. "I lost my job." He said, as Rose gasped.
The thoughts going through her head at the time all were basically one moral:
One little thing can cause one big change.

- I shivered as a gust of wind blew by, rattling the small cardboard box I lived in. The small mug that was sitting outside rattled as a coin dropped inside. I gasped and retrieved the mug, pulling it into my box. While I had been sleeping, people had dropped 5 dollarsinto my cup. 5 dollars!
I hungrily took the money out of the cup and put it in my spare hat, a baseball one for summer. I counted the money in the hat. A twenty plus a thirty equals fifty? Plus the two hundred in my bank account…250 dollars. I needed more.
I put the mug back outside, and took my chain and tied it to the pole, so nobody could steal my mug. They might steal the money, but I picked it out every morning, and normally people can’t see it at night, unless they drop money in it.
My stomach grumbled fiercely at me, so much that it hurt. I took my piece of hard bread and broke off a small piece. Eating it slowly, the grumbling stopped a little. My throat burned from lack of water. I peeked outside and scooped a handful of snow from the ground. I stuffed it in my mouth, relaxing at its cool touch on my throat, soothing the burn.
There was another clink! as money was dropped in the mug.
“Th-thank you.” I said through chattering teeth. A woman bent down to look in my box. I had a small sweater on, short pants barely even passableas pants, and no shoes.
“You poor thing.” She said, and handed me a winter jacket. I looked at her in disbelief as I took the too-big jacket, slipping it on. It covered my arms, hands and legs perfectly, I realized. It was the right kind of too-big.
“Tha-“ I began to say, before she put a finger to her lips, standing up and walking away.
Automatically, my hands formed the position of praying. I thanked the Lord and crept back into the comfort of my box, no longer shivering.
