Lost in the Rain
Preface
Preface
- Spoiler:
- I waited and waited, the tears streaming down my face. Maybe, just maybe, if I waited a little longer, he would come. Seconds passed. Minutes passed. Hours passed. I couldn't help the sob that burst from my lungs. One could probably now tell that I was crying. My face was contorted in agony. You couldn't see the tears, 'cause it was pouring down rain. My hand lifted to my mouth, trying to control my sobs. I shook my head back and forth, trying to sum it all up. He had to be here. He had to be here. He had to be here.
But he's not here... a voice inside me said. I mentally yelled at it, telling it to shut up. But in the real world, I couldn't do that. I continued to cry, just standing there in the rain. A couple minutes passed, until I finally had had enough, and just sat down on the sidewalk, right on my butt. My face fell into my hands, and the only thought that went through my mind was thank god. Thank god I had waterproof mascara.
I had first bought it a year ago, ever since I had finally had enough. I couldn't let anyone see me cry anymore. I couldn't take the sympathy anymore. I had just wanted to be alone, to try and put it all behind me.
Even though I knew that was impossible.
I continued to sob, the sobs slowly turning into whimpers, until at least an hour had passed. It was still raining. I wiped my face slowly, lifting my head up.
He still wasn't here.
You knew he wouldn't come...why were you so expectant? The voice inside me said. Shut up! I yelled back at it, swallowing back another sob. I got out my cell, and decided it was finally time. I dialed one of my best friends' number.
"Hello?"
"Hey, Sare," I said, swallowing back another cry. "Can you come pick me up?"
Silence fell on the other line. A couple minutes passed, before she even had the courage to ask. "He didn't show up, did he?"
I didn't answer.
"I-I'll come pick you up."
I hung up my phone, putting it back in my pocket. I sat back down, putting my face in my hands. I tried not to cry, but, well, I kinda failed.
The only thought that went through my head was, Why did he do this to me?
Chapter 1
- Spoiler:
- I stared at my schedule, groaning. "You have got to be kidding me..." I said. "This officially sucks," I muttered and turned my head around, and started to bang it on the closest locker next to me.
"Emo kid, 12 o'clock." Iris said, walking towards me. I turned my head towards her direction to glare at her. Iris was one of my closest, best friend's. "I am not emo." I denied, still glaring at her. She snickered. "Oh, you're one to talk." I said to her.
Iris had midnight black hair, to about half-way down her back. Really long, but way beautiful. She also had average-sized stormy gray eyes. She was wearing a shirt that draped a little past her stomach, but it looked cute. It was cream-colored, and a tank. She was wearing some short shorts under that, with some short brown boots.
"What is that supposed to mean?" She said, automatically getting defensive. "Oh, remember that one time last year, where I found you, and you were a bloody mess?" I said, snickering.
"Oh, you story twister," She said, glaring at me. "I fell off my skateboard, on the way down the ramp. Don't you remember?" I hesitated for a second, thinking. Oh yeah. I had hoped she wouldn't remember that part.... Oh, fail. "Oh, yeah..." I finally said, looking down. She smirked, while I scoffed.
"Whatever," I said at last. "You idiots," Sarah said from behind me. She was one of my other best friend's.
She had pure black hair down to the small of her back, and--on most days-- it was straight. She had ice blue eyes, that were really pretty. Well, unless she was angry. Not a pretty picture. She was wearing a short black dress that was perfect for school. Especially since it was the first day. It had a soft white belt around the waist.
I turned to stare at her, raising one eyebrow. Never thought the day would come when I'd actually see her wearing a dress at school. She shrugged. "Amber made me wear it," She said. "Oh!" I said. Amber was her little sister, and a complete outfit-freak.
I turned my head back around and leaned back against it. "This. Sucks," I muttered again, closing my eyes. Rebecca sighed, grabbing it from my hand, and scanning it. She was my little sister, but also one of my best friends. She had dark brown hair, grass green eyes, and she was a shorty. She was wearing a brown tank with light brown lace around it. She was also wearing a short skirt, with a few holes in it. And then her casual new sneakers.
"What's so bad about this?" She asked.
Sarah snatched it from her. "Oh, you wuss." She said, snickering after she had scanned it.
"Hey!" I yelled, getting defensive. I snatched back my schedule, putting it in my binder. "Look, PE here is hard, and it sucks. Majorly," I said, sighing and leaning against the random locker.
"Nah," Sarah said. "I think you're just a wuss." She said, grinning.
"Oh, you jerk." I said, rolling my eyes. "Not my fault you've never gotten below an A minus before in that class."
"Okay, that was one time. And the teacher was a jerk, too." She said, smiling.
"I hate you," I muttered.
"Love you too," She said, snickering. I sighed. "I'll see you guy's later." I said, heading off to my first class. Besides, I needed to get a good seat, and we only had a few minutes before the bell rang. Rebecca headed off to her class, and Iris and Sarah separated in opposite directions, going to their classes.
I sighed, wishing my other best friend's would get here earlier. Heidi, Miyu, Rika, and Rose.
Heidi was my other little sister, Becca's fraternal twin. She had pure blonde hair down to the small of her back, with no bangs. She had grown them out a couple years ago, but she honestly looked better without them. She was a shorty like Rebecca, except Rebecca was about an inch taller.
They were best friends, through everything. They barely ever fought, and always told each other everything. I was best friend's with each of them, but sometimes they just needed each other.
Miyu had black punk hair, with dark purple tips. Dyed, of course. She had dark green eyes that never missed a day without being outlined in thick coats of eyeliner. Yeah, she was a punk, but she was one of my best friend's. This is where the entire 'don't judge' thing comes in. Trust me, you'll love her when you meet her too.
Rika, one of my other best friend's. She had dark brown hair, and was really tall. Our personalities kinda just clicked, and we always have something to talk about. Like Heidi, she had no bangs and had grown them out.
And, last but not least, Rose. My number one best friend, ever since first grade. She had jet black hair, with no bangs. It was shoulder-length, and she always had a red rose on the right side of her hair. Kinda just what made her, her. We usually acted like we were sisters, and, well, most of the time at camps and stuff, people believed us.
The rose she wore in her hair was real. She had this huge rose garden in her backyard, so she picked fresh flowers for her hair every day. She had always felt weird not wearing a flower in her hair, because it was just part of who she was-
"Shelby!" The teacher yelled at me. "Are you even paying attention?!"
"Yes, of course." I said, blinking.
She sighed, blinking slowly once. "Come see me after class," She said, then focused back on the lesson.
Ugh. I thought, groaning mentally. After class? Great. Now I was going to be late to second period PE class. What was the point in Geometry, anyway? I had already learned all of this stuff over summer. Yep, I had been that bored. Of course, I had been failing in Math as a Freshman, so my mom had made me study.
I rested my chin in my hand, thinking. I sure hope I had some classes with Rose. Last year, I had had one class with her. Cooking. And, of course, there had been too many kids in that class, so, she, of all people, had been the one transferred out.
Finally, after I had almost lost it, the bell rang, and I gathered my stuff together. "Shelby?" The teacher said, looking over at me.
I sighed, closing my eyes. Dang it. I had almost gotten out of here. I walked over to her desk. "Yes, Miss...?" I asked.
She blinked at me. "My name is Ms. Cyrano." She said with a glare.
Well, hello to you too. I couldn't help thinking. Jeez. You space off for just twenty minutes, and the teachers are on you like a pack of wolves.
"...and I will not tolerate this for another minute. If you want to get through geometry, you need to pay attention and not space off. Understand?"
I blinked at her, not paying attention to about half of what she was saying. "Sure." I muttered, looking her in the eye. "Can I go now?"
"Yes." She said, although she still glared at me.
I rolled my eyes at her, although I don't think she noticed, as she had gone back to her computer. I scoffed, grabbing my binder and running out the door, and to the girl's locker room.
The teacher blinked at me, obviously expecting some people to come in late. I quickly sat down at one of the benches.
I instantly picked up on what she was talking about. She was explaining her rules and expectations for us, and so I decided to stay quiet and listen.
About a minute later, one of my favorite faces came running into the locker room. She was panting. "Sorry," She muttered, taking a quick seat on the benches that were near her. She apparently hadn't seen me.
My face cracked into a smile, but I tried to shut it off, succeeding. We all turned our heads back toward the teacher, listening again. She sighed, but other than that just kept on talking.
When she was finally done talking, I ran over to my Rose. "Rose!" I screamed, tackling her. She turned around, and managed a "Whoa!" right before I tackled her. I didn't exactly tackle her to the ground, but I mostly just surprised her.
She turned to see that it was me, and not some random person, and hugged me. I rolled my eyes, pushing her away, sighing. I hated when she did that...
Alright, I kinda hate hugs. It's kinda the fact of my life. I just do. I'm not sure why I hate them, I just kinda do. I mean, if I haven't seen someone in forever, then I don't care that much. But, other than that, I'm not a big fan.
"Shelby!!" She squeed, jumping up and down. "Rose!!" We both squeed together, and we caught the attention of some people; Even the teacher gave us a glance.
I stifled a laugh at some of the looks people gave us. We finally stopped, and so I said a "Hiya," all the while grinning like an idiot.
"Wow, I didn't see you, like, all summer." I said, shaking my head.
She shrugged. "You know I was in Alaska..."
"Yeah, but..."
"But, what?" She asked me with a tilt of her head.
"...but all summer?" I asked, shaking my head.
She grinned. "Yep."
I sighed. "Whatever. Let's go." I said, walking over to the line that was behind the teacher. She was giving us our lockers.
We stepped in line, although we were clear in the back. I rolled my eyes, totally used to it.
