Fantasy: Talking animals

Nikki sighed as Jon stroked her, watching his favorite T.V show. It was 9/10/01, and Rena had just celebrated her fifth birthday. Nikki sighed, thinking of how much she didn’t want her owner to leave her to go to work. If only he could stay here she thought. Nikki looked up at Jon with huge brown eyes.
“What, girl, is your food-bowl empty?” he asked.
Nikki whimpered, eyes motioning from him to the door.
Jon sighed and rolled his eyes. “Now, Nikki, we’ve been through this before. I must go to work, or else I won’t have any money.” He said, stroking the brown and white Akita’s fluffy fur. “I’d have to give you up.”
Nikki still sighed and licked his hand, waving the white flag of defeat. Little did she know that when Jon went to work that morning, her whole world would collapse under her feet.
