Ratpelt and Stonefire

Characters:

Ratty:
Ratpelt - she-cat - mated to Stonefire - solid brown fur, an abnormally long tail and amber eyes
~~Claw - tom - loner - brown fur and amber eyes~~
Dust - she-cat - loner - dusty brown fur and green eyes
Ice - she-cat - loner - silver- and white-speckled fur and blue eyes
Dusk - tom - dark brown tabby fur and pale blue eyes - blind
Moon - she-cat - silver fur and blue eyes
Sun - tom - golden-brown fur and amber eyes
Creek - tom - light brown fur and blue eyes
Twister - tom - dark gray fur with a silver swirl on each flank and gray eyes - runt of the litter

Eve:
Stonefire (Stone) - tom - mated to Ratpelt - black fur with an odd dark blue mark on his back that oddly resembles a shard of ice
Rin - she-kit - black fur and blue eyes
Razo - tom - black fur and blue eyes
Enna - she-kit - dark red fur and brown eyes
Dasha - she-kit - dark bluish fur and green eyes
Anidori - she-kit - blond fur and copper eyes
Dawn - she-kit - white fur and white eyes - looks blind but can see better than most; born without a tail

Stone sighed. He knew he had to tell her what he wanted sooner or later...but he couldn't bring himself to say it. What if she didn't want kits too? What if she would get mad at him for even suggesting it.

Stone stayed quiet. He opened his mouth to tell her, but couldn't force it out. He was nervous.

"Is something wrong?" I asked, worry gleaming in my eyes. What if he decided to leave and go back to IceClan? He would be out of danger from my littermates there, but how could I live without him anymore?

Stone looked over at her and saw the worry in her eyes. He had to explain himself now. "I know you probably don't want this, you will think its too dangerous. But it is safe here, and nothing bad will happen, they won't be able to get out or anything and your littermates couldn't get in to hurt them or.....what I am trying to say is....I have been thinking about....kits?" he held his breath waiting for what she would say.

I stared at him in shock for several seconds, then my eyes softened and I nuzzled him lovingly. "Stone," I murmured. "I can't. Not until we know we're safe. That they won't ever find us. Then... maybe."

Stone stood up, trying to hide his anger but let a growl out. He wasn't angry at her, but at himself for telling her his secret wish. He had expected this answer. Almost yelling and growling at every "r", he spoke "I do know we are safe here! They can't get us here Ratpelt!"

Surprised by his anger but not showing it, I looked back calmly. "But I don't," I said evenly. "I trust you, Stone, but I have to feel safe myself before I can bring kits into the world. If we did have kits, and then Claw and the others found us, what would we do? We can hardly defend ourselves against them when it's just the two of us. Stone-" my voice broke here, as I thought of what could happen "-if they got hurt, if they died, because I put them into danger..."

"You're not putting anyone into danger!" Stone said, yelling this time. He was truly mad, and that was rare to see of him. "The only cat you are putting in danger is yourself! They are your littermates and obviously you did something for them to want to kill you!" He stopped suddenly, realizing what he had just said. Had those harsh words come out of his mouth?

My ears folded back and I fought back the tears that had sprung to my eyes. "I killed my brother," I whispered. "You know that. But that's not why they're coming after me... They hated him anyway. They want to kill me... because it's fun. It's their game, and they don't lose. Anyone around me is in danger. I shouldn't even have joined IceClan. I thought I was far enough away..."

"Well maybe you shouldn't have joined Ice Clan. Maybe you shouldn't have met me. We wouldn't be in this situation." Stone whispered, and knew he kept taking it too far. He hopped off the branch and paced around the trunk of the tree, on the ground, away from her. Why did he get so angry? All he wanted were kits then he lost control ... he shouldn't have said those things.

My jaw dropped. It felt like he had just crushed all the air from my lungs and I gaped at him for several seconds that felt like moons. Then something passed over my mind and I retreated deep inside myself, allowing a calm, unfeeling me to take my place. "Maybe I should leave, then," I heard myself say from a great distance. "You can go find yourself another mate who won't put you in danger and wants kits." I climbed down from the tree, not even feeling the pain in my shoulder, and started for the exit.

Stone looked over at Ratpelt, who was heading for the exit. "Wh-Where are you going?" he asked softly, still ashamed of the words that rolled off his tongue.

Stone frowned. "But-But I-I didn't mean...." he stuttered, surprised that she took his words seriously. A tear rolled down his own furry face as he watched her leave. The love of his life.

And then the impassive me was gone and I whipped around, tears suddenly streaming down my muzzle. "What?" I screamed. "What didn't you mean? That I should never have joined IceClan? No, you're right. I should never have met you." And then I pelted away into the forest as fast as my paws would take me.

Stone ran after her, as fast as he could. He was a bit faster than Ratpelt, and with her injured leg, he caught up with her quickly. He skidded to a stop in front of her. "I was angry Ratpelt. Sure, I want kits. But most of all, I want you. If I never met you, I would be lonely right now. I wouldn't be on the adventure of my life taking care of the she-cat that I love more than anything in the world. I love you Ratpelt. I don't care about kits. I want what you want and if you don't want kits then neither do I. I love you Ratpelt. I love you
