Chapter 10

The quiet little escape I had been hoping for didn’t happen. My mom burst into the office, strands of hair hanging out of her bun.
“Oh honey, what happened?” My mom said, her eyes widening.
“Volleyball to the nose.” The secretary said sympathetically, nodding towards me.
“Oh sweetie! Does it hurt?”
Adults always ask that whenever kids get hurt, and I always wonder why they think it wouldn’t? I guess that’s just there way of expressing concern over our “owies.”
“Yeah, Mrs. _____, our nurse, thinks I might have broken it.” I said, putting on a brave face so my mom wouldn’t panic even more.
We left the office and grabbed my backpack from my locker, thankfully seeing no one in the hallways. I couldn’t even imagine what I looked like right now. A couple heads did turn in the classrooms as we walked by, and I ducked my head, hoping no one would recognize my bloody face.
My mom opened the door for me, and I inhaled the fresh air deeply, wincing as my nose burned at the action. We quickly walked to our old ______ ______, and I hopped in the front seat next to my mom.
As soon as the door slammed shut on both sides of the car, the inquiring began.
“What happened, and who did it? Does it hurt terribly? Do you think it’s broken? We’re you crying, sweetie?”
I explained as calmly as I could about the volleyball incident, cringing as I told her about the ball hitting my face. She gasped at that part, almost swerving off the road, and I told her I was fine, I just needed to get it checked out. I really didn’t feel fine, as it hurt like ****, but I wanted to make it to the hospital in one piece.
Fortunately, we did make it to the hospital un-mutilated, and went straight to the Emergency Room. I walked through the automatic doors, and immediately a wave of hospital-like air washed over me. I wrinkled my nose at the smell of medicine and rubber gloves as we walked straight to the front desk, crying out softly as my nose began hurting even worse. My mom was already to the desk, practically running to get there, so she didn’t hear me, for which I was glad. The last thing I needed was my mom to be more concerned about my nose then I was.
I sat down on the crinkly paper that covered the makeshift bed in the room were I waited for the doctor to come examine me. I studied the pattern of the Cheshire Cat and Alice playing chess in the forest, glad for something to take my mind off the pain. After hardly 5 minutes of trying to find a pattern in the ceiling tiles, the doctor came in. Apparently I was a top priority patient, being in the ER and all.
His shiny gold nametag read Mr. Heath, and I snickered to myself, wondering how a man with the last name of a candy bar got to be a doctor? The only thing more ironic would have been if he was a dentist, I thought as he plopped down in a rolling chair to ask my mom about any allergies I might have, etc, etc.
Finally he began to gently poke and prod at my swollen nose, me wincing with every touch.
“Well, it does indeed look like we have a break here.” Mr. _____ said in his deep, gravelly voice.
Really? I had absolutely no idea. I thought as he scribbled some notes on his clipboard. I grimaced when I realized how critical I’d been since I’d gotten hit. I’d have to be careful, I tended to say things I didn’t mean and would later regret when I was in pain, one of my many flaws.

I flinched at the sound of the car door slamming echoed in my ears. My mom glanced at me again, concern written all over her face as we walked into the house. Mr. _______ had told me to ice my nose for half an hour once I got home, then waiting another 45 minutes before icing it again, repeating the process until I went to bed. I grabbed a fish shaped soft ice pack out of the freezer, holding the Nemo look alike to my swollen nose and heading to my bedroom. As I pulled open my door and saw my microphone in its stand next to my guitar, a thought suddenly struck me.
If I could hardly talk without my nose feeling like it had been lit on fire, then how would I sing? I’d choose my guitar over singing any day, but I always sung along while playing to help keep me with the beat. I closed my eyes, wondering what I was gonna do if I couldn’t play the guitar for weeks. I was sure my fingers would soften up, and my fingers would be unsure of the chords when I played again. I knew I was overreacting, after all, I could still play, I just wouldn’t have exactly the right timing.
I laid down on my bed, sighing, shooting up when a fiery pain shot through my nose. Ouch! Note to self: do not sigh with a broken nose.

lol, ikr? If you think you're glad to see more, you should see me! lol, I was like, "yesss, I finally have time to write a little more!" lol, I probably can't write much more in the next couple days though, cuz I have a lot of tests this week...

I keep forgetting to ask you guys' opinion on this. I've been wanting to write every other chapter from a different character's view. Like, alternate between Lizzie and Luke, cuz some parts would be told much better from Luke's point of view... I haven't started yet cuz I've been so busy, but when I do have time, I'm gonna write some chapters from Luke's POV!

It's always fun for me to write from a different perspective in my stories once in a while, so I bet you'd have fun too, and it'd be fun to read!
