Slightly repulsed, I was just about to reach into the bag of rodents when she said Bree's name.

"Of course I'd love to join you," I replied. So not to sound suspicious, I added, "She must be overwhelmed by now. I bet she could use some help."

But before I got ready to follow her, I figured I should do my job first so not to have the pain of dealing with it at the last minute. Cautiously, I reached into the bag and took a rodent in my grasp. It squealed and snapped at me, like a freshly caught pickerel. It must have sensed either that I was a predator, or it could have simply known that it was about me to be lunch for Damien, like the rest of its peers. With the little beast's scruff tight in my fingers, I tossed it into the gaping jaws of the anaconda. I cast a glance at Ms. McClinsey, wondering if I had earned her approval. After all, I had no idea how to feed a snake.

“I needed a favour from you, Bree.”
She sucked in a deep breath and hid her face back in the ground. “What?” The sound was muffled.
“I need you to make on oath of fidelity. This promise you are to make – Keep it, Bree. You’ll desperately need it. So get on one knee and do it. Right now.” He held perfectly still in the cold, wet rain. A bitter scowl graven onto his face.
“What? I... I don’t...” She swallowed hard. “Understand... Why?”
“Because, I am not who you think I am...”
“Then.... who are you? An... an angel, right?”
“Wrong. I’m one of the Devil’s young.”
Her heart did a nervous flip. Oh, yeah... I always wanted to meet the Devil’s brood.
“H-how... w-why...” she managed, her breath catching on sobs.
Abruptly, his wings began to strip off, and he frowned at her in silence. He then twisted to demonstrate the two stout blemishes on his back, forming a wrong-side-up V.
She stared at the two scars with her mouth suspending wide open. “You’re...” she trailed off.
“Fallen,” he completed the sentence for her, rotating his torso to face her. “I know. Now, I won’t leave until I get what I need from you,”
She straightened and yanked one foot off the ground. But, had no other response to give him that was much more useful to him. “But... how?”
He let a moment’s silence go by as he continued to scowl at her. A gutsy sigh slipped from him, eventually. “Just, swear it.”
“Fine...” she moaned. “Uh... L-Lord, I evolve into you’re... woman. I’ll be in the fate of...” She arched an eyebrow in the Fallen’s direction. “This guy’s.”
The angel sniffed a chuckle out of his nose. “Anything else you might add?”
“I swear.”

She watched the rodent disappear into Damien. “Just a few more, Rocus. Damien isn’t as crabby, today. So, he won’t hide his satisfaction when he’s not hungry, anymore. Just stop when he begins to look a lot less interested, ‘kay?”

I nodded, pulling out a few more squirming rats to feed to him. After the seventh rodent, the anaconda looked like he didn't really want anymore so I stopped. Since I was so eager to get to Bree, I turned to Ms. McClinsey and waited for her signal to leave.

The angel’s mouth hinted at a smile.
“You’re one of us, now. You’re one of our nearest and dearest.”
Bree’s heart squeezed out an extra beat and it continued to beat almost painfully, fluttering like a helicopter’s wings, the only difference was that her heart wasn’t spinning vertically about a central axis on a machinery that could fling her up into mid-air. “Why am I? Why should I?”
“Because you fit the bill, you’ve always kept your life on a short leash, and you happen to live with The Fallen’s enemies... And they are such easy marks because they’ll never suspect someone like you.”
“What’s in it for me?” she countered.
“You’ll be making our job much easier, Bree. But for now, the ball’s is in your court. Argh, I’ll explain later.”
“No! Do your explaining, right now!”
“You’ll know what to do when you ‘wake up’. I’m a stalker,” He winked, and vanished at the sheer speed greased lightning.

"Thank you," I murmured, my foot steps following hers anxiously. I had an odd gut feeling, but I couldn't exactly place what my worry was. Perhaps Bree had gotten into trouble? Broken a phone, said the wrong thing to a customer?

I sighed, unsure. I guess I would find out soon enough.

Her eyelashes fluttered as she woke. She opened them and stared into space for a moment.
It was just a dream, she thought. A very meaningless dream. That... seemed real enough.
She dragged her hand thoughtfully along the line of her jaw and let it drop away. She got up and flexed, and felt her heart still thrumming unevenly. She then stood nailed to place, digesting what had happened in her dream.

I looked at Bree with confusion. She was acting rather strange, yet I couldn't see why. Everything looked normal anyway. It must have just been in my head; I'm too suspicious for my own good.

Her happy-as-can-be expression dimmed as she felt an abrupt tingle in her fingers. It wasn’t the prickling pins and needles sensation, but the feeling of a frisson. She gave her hand a weighty stare and saw an inky marking on her wrist. It was a double-crescent shape...
Not a bite mark...
Not really a normal circle...
She dropped it back to her side, her eyes were blue orbs eyeing it like two magnets would be after it and it’s every motion. She then decided to go loose with the truth, or at least a part of it, as she flicked a glance back at them. “I actually fell asleep on the job...” She had the sinking feeling that she wasn’t supposed to say that, so she went with a lie, next; “The dude who helped me told me that I sucked at the job and... found someone else,” She cringed, her mind not processing one logical thought. “Uh... So, then I fell asleep.”

My gaze flicked back to Bree, a flourish of thoughts running through my mind. Her reasoning seemed innocent enough, but I couldn't help but think it wasn't the whole truth. If for whatever reason there was more to the story, I would be able to get it out of her soon enough.

Cracked lips pulled into an amused smirk, I realized she really did have a point. I had no idea how to get back to the guest rooms. Well, too late to back out now.

She tried to interject a little measure of self-composure into her voice. “Me? No. I’m the uncoordinated and butterfingered one, of course.” She walked out the door and expected him to follow. “Tell me if I’m going the in right direction, or not.” Her heart fumbled a beat and she turned around to see him, again. “You’re the egotistical type, aren’t you?” Her eyes sliced into his as her voice filled the air, and she was pleased she could insert even the least amount of venom into it, and the icy, gloating smile was also perfectly heard. Her head still felt drained of blood, though. And she still felt incredibly frail as the whole human being she was. All because of some dumb dream... she thought. Oh, yeah... I‘m supposed to be some sorta angel, by now... Ugh, I actually wish I was. And I guess everyone wants to be an angel... Though we can’t all have deranged dreams about it. It’s just my fault I’m an abnormal freak gone bananas.

With a snicker, I sauntered over to her. Matching her slicing gaze, I bored my eyes into hers, leaning in close in attempt to intimidate her. "Some may say that," I breathed, my voice smooth yet poisonous all the same. "But I guess I'm really just your typical, misunderstood, charming gentleman."

That was such a lie that I couldn't help but let a grin spread across my face.

He was at least half a head taller, and she hated to admit she felt in a tight spot when he tried to intimidate her, verbally or physically. She made a snort escape her. “Oh, please. You’re a psychopathic numbskull. Alert the media! – Rocus even tries to lie about who he really is inside, and he can’t prove anyone anything otherwise about himself, because there’s in no way, shape or form a chance that he should be considered remotely handsome!”

I laughed as I looked down on her. She really so cute when she tried to get all defensive.

"Handsome? It's funny you bring up such a word when I didn't even say it myself," I pointed out with a sly smirk. "What exactly are you trying to imply, Breee?" I dragged out her name in an annoying, sing-song tone. I nearly forgot how much I enjoyed toying with her. Her delicate blue eyes were so innocent, so fragile, that it was impossible for me to resist. Even if I couldn't get a taste of her blood just yet, this was enough to make me amused.

I couldn't help but still have a grin playing across my features. This conversation was just too fun. I pondered the question for a bit, before snapping up a reply. "Hmm... Well, I guess I have a lot more secrets than you need to know," I murmured, leaning in towards Bree as if I was about to kiss her. Instead, I stopped and whispered, "And this nosy attitude of yours is going to do nothing but get you into trouble."

Avoiding her questions was the best I could do up to this point. I was never that good at battling with wits; I was more of a physical person myself.

You warned me, which means you want me to stay away from you. And why exactly? I don’t want to answer that, but I’m assuming it’s because your my ‘friend’. And if you care about me that much, you won’t be troubling me. I don’t care about how you define this ‘trouble’ of yours or what’s in your sick and twisted mind, right now, and ever. Don’t you get that you’re basically calling me forth into your own, personal viability? Ugh. Just nevermind. I’m sure you know what you’re doing, whatever you’re doing. And let me tell you something, Rocus. I’m coaxed. I’m completely persuaded when you twist my arm like this, and I’m just... lured, Rocus...”

I simply looked at her, unsure how to reply to that. There wasn't a doubt in my mind that she was right; maybe somehow, deep down, I did want her to stay away from me. But no... I may have wanted her to stay away from me, but only until it was my time to strike. That way she'd have no idea, not a clue. If I had any other intentions with my words, I would know, wouldn't I? It had meant nothing else...

Unsure whether or not she had meant that in a sarcastic way or not, I decided to take it literal. "Well, if you really are so lured by me," I began, mulling over what words I could use next. "Then you'll just have to wait and see, won't you?"

I could have given it away right then and there. I could have revealed that I had a secret, I could have demonstrated it on her... But I didn't know her well enough yet. I'd have to wait, too. Patience wasn't at all a quality of mine, but it would have to be worked on.

I backed away from her, studying the long hallway before us. My gaze was flooded with the vision of what all seemed to be identical doors. "Well, I guess I'll be taking you to your room now," I said, realizing Ms. McClinsey probably would have expected me to be back sooner. But then again, she didn't specify that I even needed to be back so maybe I had time after all.
