A tingle of fear crept through her when she was about to get nosy, again. She thought of specifically saying; ‘And when we get to my room, would you finally tell me your secret?’
Her stomach gave a hard twist and her mind felt a sharp puncture of pain. She grunted, whinging against the surpassing hurt. It overthrew her entirely, she moaned and pressed her fists to her temples, the hands on the sides of her head could not have helped, and her own mind pressed on with it, paining her crazily. Out of the varying degrees of severity, she knew this was the worst pain she had ever felt in her whole, entire life.

“Of course I’m not!” she snapped breathlessly. She felt like she got punched in the head by a prize fighter. Like bulls were trampling around aimlessly in her mind. Like her brain was dragged through a bed of razor blades before reappearing back into her skull. Like her head was shoved in acid and she could only dream of it resurfacing. Her breath exploded as her sight grew grey. Her fingers spasmed against her head. Her pulse quickened and her throat tightened. “J-just g-get me t-to my room, R-Rocus!” Disoriented, she took an ungainly step forward.

"Oh my God..." I gasped. She looked in so much pain, but I had no idea why. I felt so helpless.

I decided that instead of standing there like the cowardly rat I was, I would just take her to the nearest guest room. I wasn't sure where hers was, but it didn't matter. She just needed to lay down.

Whether or not she liked it, I scooped her into my arms. She was almost as light as a feather as I carried her to the guest room hallway. Her body felt so warm and soft against mine, reminding me once again of my addictions. But I knew she wouldn't taste good when in this much pain regardless. Besides, I may have been an animal but even I knew better than to attack her in a situation such as this.

She felt like she was on the edge of something vital. Her mind was still rolling, so she couldn’t figure out how or why. Each breath burned in her throat, and her airways felt so raw... Like they were cleansed out with wire wool. Her eyes tightened. “Hurry,” There was a catch in her throat. A frowned curved over her face at how ridiculously frail she felt. It was worse than hyperventilating.

I nodded, quickening my pace with her tight in my grasp. I flung open the first door I saw, entering the room with haste. It was decorated much like the first guest room we had entered, except it was a tad darker. Although, that could have been just because it was later in the day.

I pushed back the black veil that coated the grand bed, setting her down gently on the red velvet of the bedsheets. I hovered over her, watching with some unknown emotion fluttering in my chest. Worry? Concern? No... That would be implying that I actually cared, which wasn't possible.

"Do you need anything? Water, an icepack?" I asked, mind thrumming with confusion.

Her sight then went black. Like someone pulled a thick blindfold over her eyes. She hadn’t realized she’d closed them. In the encompassing darkness, all she could hear were the last, insufficient, weak ga-lumps of the asymmetrical beating of her heart. The sprinkling of inconsiderable beatings abruptly stopped, faltered, and went silent. Heat chewing it’s way out of her still, silent and unmoving heart, scorching everywhere. She felt like screaming. She wasn’t dead yet, after all. But she’d scream for Rocus to kill her so she wouldn’t have to withstand the pain she felt. She felt her eyes bat negligibly as she hardly found her way back to her body. She didn’t see anything. But she felt her eyes, she felt them being all wet and clammy as their sockets hurt around them. She forced them completely open and realized her vision was of the strangest color of scarlet, the blood vessels have broken into her eyes and blood spread all over the white of the sclera. She veiled her lids over her eyes again forcefully and gasped. Her strange new mark on her wrist tingling more than ever. She opened her bloodshot eyes and tried to look down at it.

When she didn't reply, I felt a cold dread sweep over me. What could possibly be wrong with her?

"Bree?" I whispered, touching her cheek softly with the back of my hand.

I was startled when her eyes popped open, jumping back and tripping onto the ground with shock. The white of her eyes were red! But how, why? I could feel my heart pounding steadily in my chest.

"Bree!" I called again, scrambling to my feet before running over to the bed and gently shaking her.

Her eyes stopped trying to find the mystifying new scar on her wrist wheeled blindly for him, instead. She felt his hands, and she just knew he was there. But, she gave up looking for him and just let her eyes roll back into her head. She was sightless, once again, and there was no use in denying it, this time around. Her legs that were curled up in suffering went limp and sprawled out. The last thing she could hear was the Fallen Angel’s dark laughter. Her gaze, always as black as thunder before, brightened to a certain semi-darkness.

"Bree!" I shouted again, now beginning to panic. I wondered if I should call Ms. McClinsey, but what would she be able to do about it? I was the one who wanted Bree to myself in the first place, who wanted to corner her and drink her blood... It was my selfishness that got her into this situation, so I was the one who needed to save her.

I climbed onto the bed beside Bree, leaning over to inspect her. She didn't look so good. I tapped my hand against her face repeatedly, like they always did to the fainting girls in movies. I just wanted her to wake up, for whatever pain she was in to be over. There was something about seeing such a nice girl suffer that made me sick.

Her face subtly bleached to a paler color. A soft peach. She found her way back, again. She opened her eyes to Rocus and looked confused. She wondered why she just didn’t die, already. She wondered what she ever did to deserve the pain. She wondered how she was supposed to not endure it, like this, as she would... And still not die. Her breathing still burned. She raised her hand weakly and stroked the column of her throat. Her touch was as smooth as satin and as fleecy as a feather – Not at all what she wanted. She wanted to rip her throat out to stop the pain once and for all.

I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw that she returned to consciousness. Yet there was something in her eyes that made me come to the conclusion that despite it all, she was still in pain.

"Bree..." I gasped her name, for what seemed like the hundredth time in a row, "What was that?"

She groaned as a jolt of pain stabbed her fatally. “I don’t know... But I think... It’s starting to get over with...” She was rasping weakly. “But what... what was ‘it’, anyway? I don’t really know, Rocus. I’ve never felt anything... like that...” She tried to pull herself into a sitting position, as she did she crossed her ankles and felt the weirdest type of pain in her back as she flexed. “Ow!” she protested in a shrill cry of agony. “Did you drop me back there when I was still in sub-consciousness, or what!?” Her breath hitched on a sob. “My back...!” The pain was ablaze and she just waited for vivid red to spout everywhere over the walls. Like in the sappy horror movies. The pain trailed from both of her shoulder blades to the center of her back. Was her skin hanging in strips back there? Did someone kick her a thousand times, there? Or did someone stab her?

I stared at her blankly, completely confused. I had never dropped her on her back... What was she talking about?

"Bree, roll over," I said gently, trying not to make it sound like I was commanding a dog. "I want to see what's wrong with your back."

For once, I really didn't know what to do. I hadn't ever had to nurse someone in pain, or even considered trying to help them... I was always the rookie. I was always the one making stupid mistakes, because I had been around superior people the majority of my life, ever since I joined the cult. I was at complete loss when it came to caring for other people... Because I had never cared for anyone. My family, maybe, but they were long gone. It felt so strange, to actually interact with someone without fear. But now, I guess I did have fear. Not fear that my ego would be bruised like whenever Bree and I quarreled, but fear that she was hurt. I didn't know why, but I didn't want it to happen. I somehow, for whatever reason, didn't want her to be hurt.

So that her blood will taste better, my mind whispered, as if to reassure me. But another part of me was disgusted... Was that all other humans were to me? Just a product for my addiction?

I didn't even know anymore...

She scorned mockingly. “Well, let’s see if you know what to do with a fractured vertebra in some stranger’s back,” She reclined into the mattress and sagged sideways, rolling over. Her head buried into the pillows as she tried to draw a veil over the pain – And tried to think of other important matters. But, what was more of utmost importance than the pain? This had to be a decisive question... Yes, the pain was more critical than anything else. She let it go and tried thinking of her friends back in college. She shoved the thought aside, mainly because she did not have any friends. She sighed deeply.

I studied her covered back hesitantly. It wasn't like I could tell much from just looking at her, but I didn't know what to do. To take off her shirt would be the obvious choice, but uh...

I almost laughed, thinking of how awkward that situation would be. I considered ripping the shirt down the back, but I guessed she wouldn't be too happy about that either. Instead, I gingerly held the material in my hands and began to roll it up, revealing her skin. I gasped when I saw the cause of the pain...

There were thick scars forming an upside-down V. A heat flow concentrated in her neck as it flushed with blood, and it went straight to her cheeks. Her faintly red-rimmed eyes narrowed.

I gently traced the scars with mixture of awe and horror. I couldn't even imagine how painful that must have been.

"Who did this to you?" I asked, a hint of a snarl in my tone. Why would anyone want to do such a disgusting thing to Bree? She couldn't have possibly done anything to make someone so mad, could she have?

Then again, I've been planning on draining her blood from day one... I reminded myself, a guilty tone edging the voice of my thoughts. But why did I care? Why didn't I just bite her now, get it over with? Being so close to a scarred wound of hers was hard enough; I could feel the saliva well up in my jaws... Yet I found myself resisting. It would be too risky, Ms. McClinsey would find out for sure.

The brimming of her mouth pulled down in a frown. “I didn’t even catch his name in the end,” she breathed. “But, you still wouldn’t be able to lecture him on doing this to me...” She turned her attention away and bowed her head in guilt, before she recoiled away from Rocus, slumping onto her side and sitting up, yanking the fabric of her shirt back down into place. She scrambled for some sort of excuse. “When I rack my brains... He was really weird... Well,” She puffed out a lungful of air. “He told me he was a Fallen Angel and had the same, corresponding scars over his back. Like mine... And I can’t believe I’m losing my nerve this much, I’m having delusions... This whole, entire thing is a dream, right...?” She felt stupid, of course it wasn’t. ~•~

I bit my lip, looking down in worry. A dream? Perhaps... But it sounded to me more like a twisted gang member attacked her than anything. I wish I could get the creep's name... I noted to myself to google Fallen Angels later on. Maybe it was a biker gang or something. It seemed like something they would do; give matching scars to recruits. That's what they did in the Russian mafia, anyway. Except, they had tattoos instead.

"Yeah, I don't know... It couldn't be a dream; you have the evidence of it on your back," I murmured. "But whoever did it... I promise, I'll get them back for you."

That was just an excuse to spill some blood though, wasn't it? I didn't- I couldn't have meant it in a way that could actually benefit her... No, that wasn't like me.

Her conflicting emotions weighed so heavily inside her chest, and her heart kicked into sixth gear in reaction. Her limbs shook. “You don’t get it, do you?” she accused in somewhat of amazement. “You’ll gnaw at anyone if you had the slimmest chance, or the even least indiscriminate victim to hurt. Of course, you’re choosing to hurt this Fallen Angel, but you don’t take me seriously when I say he’s a–Fallen Angel! And I mean it! I saw him in my dream and he made me give him my oath of fealty, and just a short while ago I heard the air resonate with his laughter...” She was frightened by the truth in her own words, and the trembling got much tighter and faster. “I’m–I’m freaked out, Rocus! I’m scared stiff! Like he is going to... Kill me,”
