"Oh." She squinted, and saw Nité was right. "Good point. Um . . . should we keep going?" Dairka obviously wasn't used to Pride life, so she didn't know whether it was proper etiquette to go to the water hole when there was a different Pride's member there.

She nodded, and slowly resumed padding forward.

I kept my eyes on the lion by the water, but he didn't move.

After a bit, she lowered her head and tail, almost as if she were hunting the other lion. But the rest of her stayed at a normal height. Dairka was honestly a little intimidated.

I approached the water carefully, still watching the lion. He was doing the same, scrutinizing us carefully.

Eventually they reached the water itself. Dairka stood there, staring cautiously at the other lion rather than drinking. Who was he? He smelled remotely familiar, although she didn't recognize his face.

He glanced around, then padded around the watering hole to the border, beckoning with his tail for us to meet him there. I padded cautiously forward.

Dairka was just a bit more eager, but forced herself to match Nité's pace. It would be bad just to lunge ahead in case he decided to try killing them.
