-----Dairka snarled and leapt off for an instant, feeling it was futile to hang on with her already loosened grip. But she only stood still for a second before she lunged back towards Zeon.

I hissed and dropped to the dusty ground, both to dodge Dairka and to try to force Nité off my back. I rolled over, trapping her beneath my much larger body.

I clawed frantically at his pelt, struggling to breathe. His muscular bulk was crushing the air from my lungs and his fur was pressed over my muzzle, making it impossible to catch my breath.

-----Roaring at the top of her lungs, Dairka crashed into Zeon’s side with her shoulder, then turned and whipped her claws at him. “[b">Get. Out!”

I was forced away from Nité, who hacked and coughed as she tried to breathe. I growled, knowing that, for the moment at least, I was just a little outmatched. "This isn't over," I spat, retreating towards the border.

-----”Good!” Dairka yelled on impulse, darting a few steps forward as if she were going to attack again. “I’d like to see you dare to cross the border again!!” She stood there for a moment, taking in huge breaths and simply feeling the wild adrenaline inside her. It took a few moments for her to remember Nité.
-----”Are you okay?” she asked, turning slightly towards her sister. There was definitely worry in her voice, though it was shaking with energy. She imagined what it would’ve been like to be squashed under Zeon like that, and shuddered. Suffocation . . . no thanks.

"Yeah," I gasped, staggering unsteadily to my paws. My lungs ached, but it was bearable, at least for now.

-----Nodding, Dairka let out a shaky sigh. “Let’s . . . get back to camp?” she suggested, glancing the direction Zeon had gone. For a moment she felt a tremble of fear, but suddenly, hope swelled in her chest.
-----They’d done it. They chased Zeon off. Sure he wasn’t finished . . . but they’d won this round. There was no reason to be scared of him any more.

-----Dairka nodded rapidly and set off in that direction, glancing once more at Nité as she did. Is she still scared? Dairka wondered, her ears perking slightly as if she were about to actually ask. Am I still scared?! She didn't think so . . . but who knew how she'd feel next time Zeon was stalking around the border.

I followed equally quickly, glancing back at the border every ten seconds or so just in case until we were out of site of it.

-----With every pawstep closer to camp, Dairka puffed her chest out a little further and raised her tail a little higher. "That was so cool! We actually beat him, can you believe it?!"

-----”I bet he doesn’t come back,” Dairka scoffed, still grinning. She glanced at Nité, hoping the cheeriness could rub off on her sister. “We’ve got the whole Brei behind us, and all he has is himself.”

"Right," I agreed quietly, looking down at my forepaws. I didn't want to ruin her optimism by voicing my thoughts: What if he did have the Makuu backing him up? Surely they wouldn't say no to two new hunters? He didn't even have to tell them that we didn't want to go, he could just say that our pride was keeping us here and they would attack.

-----Dairka wasn't certain if Nité really meant it, but her own smile brightened, and her footsteps became a little lighter as they made their way into camp. "Hey, do you think we should tell [leader's name] about this?"

-----Dairka nodded in agreement. “Right - med first, leader later.” Her tail flicking back and forth - suddenly she felt a bit nervous - she headed towards the medicine lion den.
