Chapter 4: Leaving Me Hanging

Luke

What have I done?
I can't go out with Maggie. She's unpopular. This would kill my reputation.
I started planning ways to break up with her. They were all horrible because I didn't want to do it. I liked her, but we couldn't be together.
For two years now, my biggest secret was my wanting Maggie.
I had an idea, but no, I couldn't do it. Could I?

Maggie

I wanted to faint, scream, and run in circles all at once. I was finally going on a date- with a boy! With Luke!
I had to look perfect, and everything had to be perfect.
The doorbell rang and Luke was leaning against the wall, looking cool.
I hit him.
"Luke! Don't make it look too obvious. This is an apartment. With people around," I whispered.
"Who cares?"
"Me!"
He sighed, "Fine, fine." He smiled a goofy grin, and I snuck out the door.
Once we were at the park, in the rain, he took my hand in his and held it tight.
"Look, Maggie," Luke said.
"Where?"
"Don't interrupt me when I'm speaking. Anyway," He pulled me in closer than I've ever been to a person and kissed me, the most magical kiss a girl could ask for.
Luke whispered, "Things aren't going to work out between us," and walked on the path away from me, so I walked in the other direction into the forest.

Oooo. Interesting. Great job Pugs, as always.

We talked about school and home and the weather. I don’t know why, but things were so awkward.

While holding onto me, Luke whispered, "Things aren't going to work out between us. And it‘s not because you‘re a bad kisser, which you are. It‘s not me, it‘s um, you," and walked on the path away from me, so I walked in the other direction into the forest.

I stumbled on logs, tripping and getting myself drenched. I screamed, "I hate my life!" I sat down in a puddle, wishing it was deeper so I could drown.
Bees flew past me and strange animals touched me, but I didn't flinch.
When it felt that forever had past, the thing that woke me up was a loud clap of thunder. I opened my eyes and saw a bolt of lighting storm through the sky.
Oh, no! This isn't happening! I thought. I was deep in a large forest filled with tall trees, and lightning could kill me in seconds.
"Help!" I screamed. I put my fingers to my mouth and whistled. "Help!"
Lightning struck, and I thought, What's the use? I'm never getting out of here, so I dropped to the ground and went to sleep, for what could be the last one I have.
When I woke up, I wasn't in the forest anymore. I saw a grand piano, and a fireplace, and a few chairs, and -I gasp- Matt!
