Ophelia shut her car door, making sure not to slam it, and headed up the rocky steps to her apartment door. She walked in, noticing the old book smell that surrounded the complex and avoiding the age-old elevator, took the stairs. Third floor, last door down the narrow hallway on your left. Ophelia struggled with the lock for a few minutes before entering the dark apartment. Her parents were like vampires; sleep most of the day; keep all the lights off; go to work at night. Despite that, she loved the sun. Therefore the first thing she did every day coming home from school was open the blinds, the screen, and then the window of the fire escape. It's chilly for April, she thought, feeling the crisp breeze.
She sighed, turning around and setting bag on the coffee table. “Mom?” her question echoed across the long hallway as she walked to her parents’ bedroom. Nothing there, that’s fairly odd; Mom’s off, she thought. Ophelia frowned and walked back to the kitchen, which was open to the living room and fire escape. She breathed a sigh of relief she hadn’t known she’d been holding when she saw a note on the fridge. It read:
Gone to the store, I’ll be back soon. Dad get’s off early tonight so we’ll have pizza!
Love, Mom
Ophelia’s eyes widen when she realized that it wasn’t her mother’s handwriting. The frightened girl raced into her bedroom and screamed—to bodies on the floor. Her parents.
-boom-
Moments later Ophelia found herself in the ruins of her apartment. Heart and head racing, she dragged herself out from under large piles of everything and grabbed her red bag that had fallen next to her.
A bomb!? her mind screamed, because the words wouldn’t come out of her mouth and she couldn’t hear anything. Ophelia was so disorientated as she fled from the crime scene she hardly noticed her ears popping and fire trucks and police cars blaring.
She was barely able to fathom anything until she stopped in the local park and collapsed against an oak tree. “What happened?” Ophelia asked to no one in particular. No answer came aloud, however, her mind said: Bombed apartment=homeless, parents dead=orphan, Ophelia Caliway acting like an idiot=priceless.
Ophelia then realized what she was thinking and scowled, slowly sliding down the tree to sit criss-cross on the ground. What’s happening? She asked, mainly to herself.
And the pride inside his eyes
