The shield strengthened and then vanished completely, and I could tell that it was an elf but didn't invade any further. A flurry of wordless conversation passed between Optyr and I in an instant and then he angled down towards where the elf was. Something had to be wrong; elves didn't just drop their shields.

(He's an elf, right?)

Isi'tom struggled to take energy from one of the beads on his necklace. He gained a little and set up a small shield.

He landed in the forest about a hundred yards away from where I had felt the consciousness and I slid off his back and began to pick my way through the forest. If there was something dangerous there, we didn't want to announce our presence by landing right there.

I felt my body stiffen and become immobile as if invisible ropes had wrapped themselves around me. "Eka malabra ono né haina!" I yelled again. "Fricai onr eka eddyr! I am your friend!"
